Jianghan University — guide for international students

Jianghan University (江汉大学, JHU — the web domain is jhun.edu.cn, so JHUN is also common) took its present form in October 2001, when the Ministry of Education approved the merger of the former Jianghan University, the Hankou Branch of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan Education Institute and Wuhan Staff Medical College. The oldest of those roots goes back further: Wikipedia records the original Jianghan University as a technical college set up by the Wuhan city government in 1981. In March 2009 the Hubei Chemical Research Institute was merged into the university, according to its Chinese-language introduction.

It is a Hubei provincial university, jointly administered by the Hubei Provincial People’s Government and the Wuhan Municipal People’s Government, with Wuhan taking primary responsibility — which is why it describes itself as an urban university serving the city. The 2026 admissions guide calls it the first provincial university in Hubei to hold doctoral programs, a state key laboratory and a full-time academician at the same time, and notes its selection for the national “111 Program” (Program of Introducing Talents of Discipline to Universities). Chemical Engineering and Technology is designated a “First-Class Domestic Discipline” at provincial level in Hubei.

The main campus is in the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone, next to Sanjiao Lake. The 2026 guide gives its size as more than 2,000 mu with over 900,000 square metres of floor space; the English introduction gives 135.8 hectares and 904,200 square metres. Official counts of programs and staff differ by page, so treat any single number as approximate: the 2026 guide lists 17 schools, 69 undergraduate programs, 26 master’s degree programs and one first-level doctoral program, with 1,402 full-time teachers of whom 58.9% hold doctorates; the Chinese-language university introduction (data to March 2026) gives 63 undergraduate majors and 1,342 teachers with 63% holding doctorates; and the English introduction gives 74 undergraduate programs and 1,405 academic staff. Student numbers are consistent: nearly 20,000 full-time undergraduates, more than 2,500 master’s and doctoral students, and roughly 200 international degree students.

For 2026 Jianghan University admits international students to a short, specific list of programs rather than to its whole catalogue. The 2026 International Student Admissions Guide (江汉大学2026年国际学生招生简章, published 13 March 2026 on the International Office site as a set of images) lists three bachelor’s programs — International Economics and Trade and Business Administration, both taught in English, and Clinical Medicine, taught in Chinese — four English-taught master’s programs in Chemical Engineering and Technology, Materials Science and Engineering, Management Science and Engineering, and Electronic Information, and a non-degree Chinese language program. No doctoral program appears in the 2026 guide, so doctoral study is not open to international applicants in this cycle even though the university holds one doctoral authorization. Age limits are set by level: 18 to 24 for undergraduates, 18 to 35 for non-degree students, and 18 to 35 for master’s applicants; applicants under 18 must provide proof of legal guardianship. Undergraduate and non-degree applicants need a high-school diploma or above, and master’s applicants a bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Chinese-taught study requires HSK Level 4. The guide does not set an English test score for the English-taught programs, nor does it publish an application fee or application deadlines — ask the School of International Education (sie@jhun.edu.cn) before you apply. These are the dates Jianghan University published for the 2026 intake. That cycle has closed. Use them as a guide to when each step falls in the year, and check the official pages for the 2027 dates before you plan around them.

The 2026 guide describes a simple, university-funded scheme rather than a menu of government awards. International undergraduates in International Economics and Trade or Business Administration receive a scholarship of RMB 10,000 a year — the same amount as the tuition — and international master’s students receive RMB 20,000 a year, again equal to tuition, plus a living allowance of RMB 1,500 a month paid for 12 months of the year. Eligibility is reviewed every academic year: an annual average GPA below 2.0, or any violation of laws, regulations or university rules, means no scholarship the following year. Outstanding undergraduates can additionally apply for the university’s “Study at JHU” (留学江大) scholarship. The guide does not mention a scholarship for the Chinese-taught Clinical Medicine program or the Chinese language program, and it does not list the Chinese Government (CSC) Scholarship or the Hubei provincial or Wuhan municipal scholarships — if you are hoping for one of those, ask the office whether JHU accepts applicants through them this year.

JHU’s research is explicitly application-oriented and built around service to Wuhan and Hubei. The 2026 admissions guide counts more than 2,000 government-funded research projects over the past five years, one state key laboratory, 25 provincial- and ministerial-level research platforms, one national sports science popularization base, four provincial science popularization bases, two municipal pilot bases and one proof-of-concept center. The Chinese-language university introduction (data to March 2026) counts 32 provincial and ministerial research platforms instead of 25, and lists a national discipline innovation and talent recruitment base (the 111 Program base) rather than a state key laboratory — both are official, so quote either with its source.

Jianghan’s international footprint is modest but growing. Its International Office reports partnerships with 75 institutions in 23 countries and regions — including the National University of Singapore, UCLA, the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest in Ireland, the University of Pau in France and Oita University in Japan — while the English university introduction gives “over 74” partners in 24 countries or regions. The 2026 guide highlights exchange programs with universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Australia, a Sino-foreign cooperative undergraduate program in Visual Communication Design, and a Spanish Language Center and German Language and Culture Center on campus. International students at JHU have won the Hubei Grand Prize and a National Second Prize in the SFLEP Cup National College Students’ Intercultural Competence Contest, and the university’s dragon boat team won the overall championship at the Uganda Dragon Boat Race three years running.

JHU describes its teaching as application-oriented, and the one career service the 2026 guide names specifically for international students is practical: the School of International Education and Wuhan Auto Concentration Digital Technology Co., Ltd. have jointly set up an International Student Internship Base. The university does not publish employment rates, salaries or destinations for international graduates on its official pages, so ask the School of International Education what internship and job support is available for your program.

International students live in the International Student Apartment on the main campus in the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone, beside Sanjiao Lake. Rooms are standard doubles, each with a private Western-style bathroom, water heater and air conditioning; the building has a shared kitchen, laundry room and drinking-water stations, 24-hour management, access control and round-the-clock surveillance. Because the international community is small — around 200 degree students — the School of International Education runs much of its social life directly: the 2026 guide pictures an International Cultural Festival (now in its eighth edition), a volleyball tournament, Silk Road intangible-heritage workshops, a New Year gala and the international students’ dragon boat team.

The international student apartment has a communal kitchen, so cooking for yourself is an option. JHU does not publish canteen locations or meal prices for international students in its 2026 guide or on its English pages — budget for food separately and ask on arrival.
