About Wuhan University of Technology
Wuhan University of Technology (武汉理工大学, WUT) took its present shape on 27 May 2000, when three specialist universities merged: Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan Transportation University and Wuhan Automotive Polytechnic University. The two official profiles date the institution differently, and it is worth knowing which one you are reading. The English profile page dates those three predecessors to 1948, 1946 and 1958. The university’s Chinese profile traces the teaching much further back — to the Hubei Institution of Technology (湖北工艺学堂) founded in 1898 — and counts 128 years of history, which is the figure WUT itself leads with in Chinese. This guide uses 1898 for that reason, but expect to see 2000 or 1948 quoted elsewhere.
WUT is a three-campus university, and all three are in Wuhan: Mafangshan (divided into an East and a West community), Yujiatou and South Lake. Together they occupy nearly 4,000 mu — about 267 hectares on the English profile page — with 2.461 million square metres of buildings and a library of more than 4.25 million volumes. The address that matters to an applicant is the Mafangshan East Campus: the School of International Education, which runs admission for every international student at every level, sits in Room 421 there, at 205 Luoshi Road in Hongshan District. The university switchboard uses a different Luoshi Road number, 122, so both addresses are genuine and neither is a typing error.
A national key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education, WUT entered the first batch of Project 211 universities and is in the national Double First-Class plan, where the listed discipline is materials science and engineering — selected in both consecutive rounds. Its Chinese profile counts 35 teaching and research units, 103 undergraduate majors, 23 first-level doctoral and 45 first-level master’s programs and 21 post-doctoral research stations, teaching more than 37,000 undergraduates and more than 24,000 master’s and doctoral students, with more than 5,000 staff and an annual international-student population of over 1,200. The English profile page gives an older and smaller picture — 23 schools, about 800 international students, a Times Higher Education Asia placing from 2013 — so where the two disagree this guide follows the Chinese page, which is the one the university keeps current. The QS profile, counted on its own basis, lists 49,740 students of whom 1,477 are international.

Materials science is the flagship
Materials science and engineering is WUT’s discipline in the national Double First-Class plan, selected in both consecutive rounds, and it anchors national key laboratories in materials composites, silicate science and advanced building materials, and advanced glass materials.
Built for three industries
WUT describes itself as the largest trainer of talent for China’s building materials and construction, transport and automobile industries, with more than 700,000 graduates produced since its founding.
Three campuses, one city

A short English-taught undergraduate list
Only seven bachelor’s majors are taught in English. The Chinese-taught choice is far wider — 103 undergraduate majors — so the language you study in decides how much of the university is open to you.

Wuhan University of Technology admits international students to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees through its School of International Education, and every application goes through the online system at admission.whut.edu.cn (which forwards to the international student management system at lxsgl.whut.edu.cn). For the 2026 intake one window covered all three levels: 10 October 2025 to 30 June 2026 for self-sponsored and other applicants, with a separate, shorter window of 1 January to 30 April 2026 for Chinese Government Scholarship applicants. One requirement sets WUT’s undergraduate route apart from most Chinese universities: undergraduate applicants must sit the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) at www.csca.cn and upload the score report when they submit the application — mathematics is compulsory, physics or chemistry is optional for engineering majors, and the test is taken in the language the program is taught in. Age is bounded at every level and the bounds differ: undergraduate applicants should be between 18 and 25, master’s applicants under 35, doctoral applicants under 40. Postgraduate admission is supervisor-led — a Provisional Acceptance Letter from a WUT academic supervisor is on the document list, so start that conversation early. At the time this guide was checked WUT had not published a 2027 admission guide on its English pages, so every date below belongs to the 2026 cycle; check the School of International Education’s site for the 2027 notice before you plan around them. One gap is worth naming: the 2026 degree guides cover degree study only — they set out no Chinese-language, exchange or visiting-student route and price none. If you want to study Chinese at WUT without enrolling in a degree, ask the School of International Education for the current non-degree guide.

The English-taught list is short and business- and engineering-led: business administration, civil engineering, economics, computer science and technology, mining engineering, logistics management and mechanical engineering. The Chinese-taught choice is much wider; rather than printing a list, the admission guide sends applicants to WUT’s Chinese undergraduate admissions site for the full range of 103 majors.

- Non-Chinese citizen holding a valid foreign passport, healthy and well-behaved.
- Aged between 18 and 25. The age floor is not an absolute bar: an applicant under 18 as of 1 September 2026 must submit a Guardian Statement rather than being excluded.
- Good academic records and schooling equivalent to a Chinese high-school diploma, evidenced by the diploma and full transcripts — the original plus a Chinese or English translation.
- China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA): sit the test at www.csca.cn and upload the score report with the application. Mathematics is compulsory; physics or chemistry is optional for engineering majors; the test language matches the language of instruction of the program.
- Chinese-taught programs: an HSK level IV or above certificate, required of applicants whose previous stage of education was taught in a language other than Chinese.
- English-taught programs: TOEFL 80 or above, IELTS 6.0 or above, or an equivalent certificate (TOEFL My Best, TOEFL iBT Home Edition and TOEFL Essentials are accepted), for applicants whose native language is not English. Without one of those scores WUT sets its own oral or written English test instead.

Admission runs through document review, academic assessment and an interview, and it is supervisor-led: the document list includes a Provisional Acceptance Letter from a WUT academic supervisor, which in practice is the step that takes longest.

Note that the postgraduate page’s document list is worded for school leavers — it asks for a “Diploma of high school education” and “High school transcripts” — which appears to be carried over from the undergraduate guide; submit your highest degree and its transcripts, and ask the office if you want that confirmed in writing.

Tuition at WUT is set by discipline band and by language of instruction, and the English-taught version of the same subject costs RMB 3,000–5,000 more per year. Undergraduate study runs RMB 18,000–30,000 a year, master’s study RMB 23,000–38,000 (the MBA is priced separately at RMB 30,000–34,000) and doctoral study RMB 30,000–45,000, with fine arts the most expensive band at every level. On top of tuition, budget the RMB 500 (or USD 80) application fee and accommodation: an on-campus bed in a double room is RMB 8,400 a year per person, and the postgraduate guide adds a single room at RMB 12,000 a year. WUT’s English admission guides do not price medical insurance, the residence permit or the physical examination, so treat those as extra and ask the School of International Education for the current amounts before you budget.

Scholarships
WUT’s English pages name three funding channels, and they are not equally documented — which matters, because the one with published terms is the one for postgraduates. The 2026 undergraduate guide names only the Chinese Government Scholarship – Bilateral Program (Type A), which you do not apply for at WUT at all: you apply through the Chinese embassy or consulate in your own country, under the terms the China Scholarship Council sets. The 2026 postgraduate guide names three: the Bilateral Program, the Chinese University Program (Type B), and the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) Scholarship, and sets the WUT scholarship application window at 1 January to 30 April 2026. Full terms in English exist only for the Chinese University Program route, in WUT’s notice for the 2025 High Level Postgraduate Program; those figures are reproduced below and marked, because that notice’s own deadline belongs to the 2025 cycle. Note what is absent: on the English pages checked here WUT publishes no university-funded or Hubei provincial scholarship terms for international students, so if you are told about one, ask the School of International Education to confirm it in writing.
Chinese Government Scholarship — Bilateral Program (Type A)
Set by the China Scholarship Council rather than by WUT; the university’s English admission guides name the channel and link to csc.edu.cn and campuschina.org without restating the terms.
Eligibility: The only scholarship named on WUT’s 2026 undergraduate guide, and open at postgraduate level too. You apply through the Chinese embassy or consulate in your home country, not through the university — so your national dispatching authority’s deadline governs, and it is usually earlier than WUT’s own.
Chinese Government Scholarship — Chinese University Program (Type B), High Level Postgraduate Program
Full funding as set out in WUT’s 2025 notice for this program: a tuition waiver, free accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance and a monthly living allowance of RMB 3,000 for master’s and RMB 3,500 for doctoral students. International travel is at your own expense. These amounts are the 2025 notice’s — confirm the current year’s notice before relying on them.
Eligibility: Foreign citizens in good health: master’s applicants need a bachelor’s degree and must be under 35, doctoral applicants need a master’s degree and must be under 40. Language thresholds are set by discipline as well as by medium — HSK level 4 or above for science and engineering, HSK level 5 or above for the liberal arts, or TOEFL 80 / IELTS 6.0 for English-taught programs. You may not hold another scholarship at the same time. Apply in the CSC system under WUT’s agency number 10497, category B, and submit the same file to the university system; the university’s 2026 scholarship window is 1 January to 30 April 2026.
Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) Scholarship
Terms are set by China’s Ministry of Commerce in its own annual guide rather than by WUT, and the university’s English postgraduate guide names the channel without restating them.
Eligibility: Named on the 2026 postgraduate admission guide as one of the three scholarship channels WUT takes part in; it is a postgraduate channel and does not appear on the undergraduate guide. Ask the School of International Education which of its programs are covered in the year you apply.

Research at the university
WUT’s research follows the three industries it was built for — building materials and construction, waterborne transport, and the automobile industry — and it is concentrated rather than broad. The university reports 58 national and provincial or ministerial research bases. The national key laboratories its Chinese profile names are, in translation, advanced technology for materials synthesis and processing; silicate science and advanced building materials; waterway traffic control; advanced glass materials; and high-temperature light alloys and application technology, alongside the national engineering research centres for optical-fibre sensing technology and networks and for water transport safety. Materials science and engineering is the discipline selected in both rounds of the national Double First-Class plan, and in the 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects WUT’s strongest placing is marine and ocean engineering at #6 in the world, with 24 subjects ranked in total. The university reports five national science and technology awards in 2023 and, over the five years before that, one State Natural Science Award, two invention awards and two progress awards at national level.

The English Global Partners page says the university cooperates with more than 190 universities and research institutions, has built 11 high-level international research platforms with universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan, and hosts 7 national and provincial international science and technology cooperation bases established with the Ministry of Science and Technology, with more than 300 foreign scholars as visiting or honorary professors. The Chinese profile page counts 110-odd partner universities and research institutions — in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Canada, Australia, Russia and the Netherlands — 20 high-level international research platforms and 12 national-level international science and technology cooperation bases. Neither page says which supersedes the other; both are cited below. The concrete pieces are the two joint ventures: an overseas campus with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, established in 2016, and the WUT–Aix-Marseille College with Aix-Marseille University, established in 2018.

Be realistic about what WUT publishes here: it issues no employment rate, salary or placement statistics for international graduates on its English pages, and there is no English-language careers service aimed at them — the School of International Education is the office you deal with from application to graduation. What the university does document is the industrial base behind a WUT degree. Its Chinese profile states that WUT has produced more than 700,000 graduates and is the largest trainer of specialised talent for China’s building materials and construction, transport and automobile industries, the three sectors its schools, laboratories and industry partnerships are organised around. Careers and recruitment for the university as a whole run through its admissions and employment section (招生就业) in Chinese. One small check worth knowing about: WUT’s alumni association does maintain a “distinguished alumni” page, but it was empty when this guide was compiled, so this profile names no alumni rather than repeating names from unofficial lists.

- The strongest career asset is sectoral: WUT is the largest supplier of specialised talent to China’s building materials and construction, transport and automobile industries.

Housing is on campus and is quoted per person per year rather than per month, which makes it easy to set against the tuition band you fall into; neither guide names the building or says which campus a given program teaches on, so ask before you plan a commute. Beyond accommodation, WUT publishes little in English on dining, sport or student societies for international students; the School of International Education is the office that answers day-to-day questions and handles registration and student management.

Chinese Government Scholarship applicants had a separate and much shorter window, 1 January to 30 April 2026. Registration has no fixed published date: both guides say it follows the specific time printed on your Admission Notice. WUT had not published a 2027 guide in English when this profile was checked, so confirm the next cycle’s dates with the School of International Education.
Does WUT offer scholarships for international students?+
It takes part in Chinese Government Scholarship channels and in the Ministry of Commerce scholarship, but the amount of detail published in English varies sharply. The undergraduate guide names only the Bilateral Program (Type A), which you apply for through the Chinese embassy or consulate in your own country. The postgraduate guide adds the Chinese University Program (Type B) and the MOFCOM scholarship, and sets WUT’s scholarship application window at 1 January to 30 April 2026. Only the Chinese University Program route has published terms: WUT’s 2025 notice for the High Level Postgraduate Program gives a tuition waiver, free accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance and a monthly allowance of RMB 3,000 for master’s and RMB 3,500 for doctoral students, applied for in the CSC system under agency number 10497, category B. No university-funded or Hubei provincial award for international students appears on the English pages checked here.
Where do international students live, and what does it cost?+
On campus: both 2026 guides quote on-campus dormitory rates for new students without naming a building. A bed in a double room is RMB 8,400 per year per person on both the 2026 undergraduate and postgraduate guides; the postgraduate guide additionally lists a single room at RMB 12,000 per year. Neither page itemises utilities or deposits, so ask before you arrive — and undergraduates should ask whether the single-room rate is open to them, because their guide lists only the double.
Is there an age limit for international applicants at WUT?+
Yes, and it is set per level. Undergraduate applicants should be between 18 and 25 — but the lower bound is not an absolute bar: an applicant under 18 as of 1 September 2026 submits a Guardian Statement instead of being excluded. Master’s applicants must be under 35 and doctoral applicants under 40, and the same two ceilings apply on the Chinese Government Scholarship route.
