About Hangzhou Normal University
Hangzhou Normal University (杭州师范大学, HZNU) traces its origins to 1908 and the Zhejiang Official Dual-level Normal School, which the university’s English site describes as one of China’s six major higher normal institutions of the time. Lu Xun, Li Shutong and Ye Shengtao all taught there. The institution went through several names as a provincial normal school and then a teachers college; in 2000 six colleges and institutes were merged into Hangzhou Teachers College, which became Hangzhou Normal University in 2007. The university describes itself as a key university of Zhejiang Province with a rich tradition in teacher education — it is a provincial institution, not part of the national Double First-Class list.
Teacher education is the tradition, but HZNU is now a comprehensive university spanning the humanities, sciences, engineering and medicine. It has 24 schools and divisions and two affiliated hospitals, six first-level doctoral programs plus one professional doctorate, 25 master’s programs and 26 professional master’s programs. It operates across three campuses — Cangqian, Yuhuangshan and Xiasha — covering 2.29 million square metres in total; the School of International Education and the international admissions office are on the Cangqian campus at 2318 Yuhangtang Road in Yuhang District, in the west of the city.
The English History & Profile page counts 32,491 full-time students, including 6,205 graduate students and 626 international students. That international figure covers all international students; the 2025 admission guide gives a narrower count of nearly 450 degree-seeking international students. Staff figures differ between two pages of the same English site: the History & Profile page gives 4,551 staff members, of whom 2,174 are full-time teachers (80.82% holding doctorates), while the English home page shows 4,668 faculty. Neither page says which is the more recent count.

Admission, programs & tuition
HZNU admits international students to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and to a long-term Chinese language program, all through one online system at international.hznu.edu.cn run by the School of International Education. For the September 2026 intake the School published separate application guides on 4 March 2026: degree applications run from 9 March to 30 June 2026, and the 2026 guides state that 9 undergraduate, 12 master’s and 3 doctoral programs are open to international students (the 2025 guide listed 8, 10 and 2). Three rules deserve attention before anything else. First, the age limits are tight: undergraduates must be 18 to 25, master’s applicants no older than 30, and doctoral applicants no older than 40. Second, from the 2026/2027 academic year every undergraduate applicant must submit a valid CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment) transcript. Third, the application fee is charged only after a conditional offer: the RMB 400 must be paid within one week of the pre-admission notice or the offer is cancelled. English-taught programs do not set a minimum IELTS or TOEFL score — English is assessed at interview, and test scores may be supplied as supporting evidence. The 2026 guides do not print per-major tuition; they refer to the 2026 major catalogue, a PDF on the application system. The latest per-major tuition table the School publishes on its own pages is in the 2025 guide (effective from 1 March 2025), and the figures below come from it — confirm the 2026 rate for your major in the catalogue before paying. At master’s and doctoral level the 2026 guide adds that international students are currently admitted mainly on a university scholarship basis, reviewed each year.

Long-term Chinese Language Program (长期汉语言进修生项目)
Chinese language study for non-degree students at the School of International Education. The 2026 guide covers the autumn 2026 intake only: applicants must be aged 18 to 35 and hold a foreign passport and a senior high-school diploma with transcripts. Applications run from 15 May to 30 May 2026; the RMB 400 application fee is due within one week of pre-admission and tuition within one week of registration in early September. Insurance is at least RMB 400 a semester or RMB 800 a year. Housing is in shared rooms with utilities included — see campus life. Long-term language students are the group eligible for the Hangzhou Municipal Government D-class scholarship.

Tuition at HZNU sits at the lower end for Hangzhou: RMB 18,000–25,000 a year for bachelor’s study, RMB 22,800–24,800 for master’s and RMB 30,000 for doctoral study, according to the per-major table in the 2025 guide (the most recent one published; the 2026 guides refer to the 2026 major catalogue instead, so confirm your major’s rate there). The Chinese language program is RMB 7,500 a semester or RMB 15,000 a year in 2026. Every applicant pays a RMB 400 application fee after receiving a pre-admission notice, and it is not refunded. Insurance is at least RMB 800 a year for degree students and RMB 400 a semester or RMB 800 a year for language students. Degree students’ single rooms cost RMB 7,000, 10,000 or 14,000 a year with utilities paid separately; language students pay RMB 60–75 a day with utilities included.

HZNU lists five scholarship families on the School of International Education site: the Chinese Government Scholarship (Bilateral Program and University Program), the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, the Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship, the Hangzhou Municipal Government Scholarship and the university’s own International Student Scholarship. For graduate applicants the university award matters most: the 2026 graduate guide says international master’s and doctoral students are currently admitted mainly on a university scholarship basis, reviewed every year. The provincial and municipal awards are selection rounds for students already enrolled rather than awards you apply for with your admission file. Official pages do not always agree on the details — the undergraduate guide and the scholarship page label the university’s undergraduate awards differently, and the Zhejiang scholarship is described with two categories on its own page but three in the 2025 guide — so confirm the current terms with the office.
Hangzhou Normal University International Student Scholarship
Type A (graduate students): a tuition award plus a living allowance of RMB 1,500 a month for master’s students or RMB 2,000 a month for doctoral students, paid for 10 months a year. Type B (undergraduates): RMB 20,000 a year towards tuition. Type C (undergraduates): RMB 10,000 a year towards tuition. The 2026 undergraduate guide words the freshman award differently — a first-year “Type A” award of RMB 20,000 or “Type C” award of RMB 10,000 — so the RMB 20,000 undergraduate award is labelled A in one place and B in the other; the amounts agree.
Eligibility: Valid foreign passport; undergraduates aged 30 or under and graduate students under 40; high-school diploma or bachelor’s degree or above; good health, law-abiding and respectful of Chinese customs. Awards are reviewed annually — the School issued its notice for the 2026 review round on 22 September 2026.
Chinese Government Scholarship — University Program
Tuition, free on-campus accommodation, a living allowance and medical insurance.
Eligibility: Full-time master’s study (2–3 years, extendable by up to one year of Chinese language preparation). Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health, under 35, with a bachelor’s degree; Chinese-taught programs need HSK Level 5 or above. Holders of other scholarships cannot apply, and you may not apply to study your native language. Apply on the CSC website with agency number 10346 by 30 April 2026, then upload documents to HZNU’s system; results are announced in July 2026.
Chinese Government Scholarship — Bilateral Program
Set by the China Scholarship Council; HZNU accepts undergraduates, graduate students, general scholars (including one-semester or one-year Chinese language students) and senior scholars under this channel.
Eligibility: Apply through the dispatching authority for study abroad in your home country, naming Hangzhou Normal University (agency number 10346) as your target — HZNU does not accept these applications directly. Applications generally run from early January to early April; check your own country’s deadline.
International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
Tuition, accommodation, a living allowance (not for four-week research students) and comprehensive medical insurance.
Eligibility: Three tracks at HZNU: a bachelor’s in International Chinese Language Education (up to four years; HSK 4 with 210 points plus HSKK Intermediate with 60 points), a one-year study program (up to eleven months; HSK 3–4 depending on the track) and a one-semester program (up to five months; HSK 3 with 180 points plus HSKK). Applicants must be aged 16–35 as of 1 September 2026 (in-service teachers up to 45; bachelor’s applicants generally under 25). Apply at www.chinese.cn; the deadline for September 2026 entry is 15 May 2026.
Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship for International Students
Type A (postgraduates): RMB 30,000 a year. Type B (undergraduates): RMB 20,000 a year. The 2025 guide describes three categories — A, B and C for postgraduates, undergraduates and language students — while the scholarship’s own page lists only A and B.
Eligibility: Enrolled international students with outstanding results in their cohort: master’s students under 35 with a bachelor’s degree and two professors’ recommendation letters; undergraduates under 30. Appropriate Chinese proficiency (such as an HSK certificate) is expected, and holders of other scholarships are excluded. Selection takes place each October, after the provincial education department’s notice.
Hangzhou Municipal Government Scholarship for International Students
The 2025 guide says the funding standard is the same as the Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship. The D-class round for long-term language students is awarded to up to 15% of enrolled long-term language students; its notice does not state an amount.
Eligibility: Outstanding international students already enrolled. The D-class award goes to long-term Chinese language students in China (exchange students and holders of other government scholarships are excluded); for the spring 2026 round, students enrolled by 30 April 2026 applied to their class adviser by 11 May 2026. A notice for the second-half 2026 round was issued on 22 September 2026.
