About Zhejiang Sci-Tech University
Zhejiang Sci-Tech University (浙江理工大学, ZSTU) traces its origin to the Sericulture Academy (蚕学馆) founded in 1897 beside West Lake by Lin Qi, then prefect of Hangzhou, as part of the late-Qing movement to save the country through industry and education. It became the Zhejiang Higher Sericulture School in 1908, passed through a series of Republican-era silk and sericulture schools, was upgraded to Zhejiang Silk Engineering College (浙江丝绸工学院) in August 1964, renamed Zhejiang Institute of Engineering in April 1999, and took its present name in May 2004. It won the right to award doctoral degrees in January 2006, was selected as a Zhejiang key construction university in 2017 and entered the province’s high-level university construction program in 2023. Its own profile page, updated June 2026, describes 129 years of educational history.
ZSTU is a provincial university rather than a national one: it is not a Double First-Class institution, was never in Project 985 or 211, and does not appear in the QS World University Rankings. What it does have is a genuinely world-class specialism. ShanghaiRanking places its textile science and engineering third in the world in the 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, and gives ZSTU an ARWU 2026 world band of 501–600 and a Best Chinese Universities Ranking 2026 position of #112. Chemistry, materials science and engineering sit in the global top 0.2% by ESI, with seven further subjects — plant and animal science, agricultural sciences, biology and biochemistry, environment and ecology, computer science, clinical medicine and social sciences general — in the top 1%.
The university runs 21 schools and departments plus one independent college, and teaches 39,849 full-time students including the independent college, of whom 9,843 are graduate students. Staff number 2,770, including 384 full professors and 780 associate professors; the president, Chen Wenxing, was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2019. Teaching covers 52 undergraduate majors — 28 of them national first-class major construction points — 24 first-level master’s disciplines and 20 professional master’s categories, six first-level doctoral disciplines and two professional doctorates, with four postdoctoral research stations.
ZSTU describes its layout as “three campuses and one centre”, and its campus pages show four sites: Xiasha, the main campus at 928 Second Avenue in Qiantang District, Hangzhou; Linping and Wenyi, also in Hangzhou; and Shangyu in Shaoxing. International students are based in Hangzhou — the registration notice calls new students to the Xiasha and Linping campuses — but ZSTU publishes no campus-by-program map on its English pages, so confirm with the office which campus your program sits on.

A provincial, not a national, university
ZSTU is a Zhejiang key university selected in 2023 for the province’s high-level university construction program. It is not Double First-Class and does not appear in QS — worth knowing if your scholarship or home-country recognition rules depend on those lists.

The main Xiasha campus sits in Qiantang District in Hangzhou’s higher-education zone, with further campuses at Linping and Wenyi in Hangzhou and Shangyu in Shaoxing.
Admission
Admission, programs & tuition
Zhejiang Sci-Tech University admits international students to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and to three non-degree routes — a Chinese language program, a General Scholar (visiting student) program and a short-term academic exchange program. Two things set its admission apart from most Chinese universities. First, undergraduate applicants must sit the China Scholastic Competency Assessment: ZSTU’s own bachelor’s guide states that “Undergraduate applicants must take the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (hereinafter referred to as the ‘CSCA Test’), organized by the China Scholarship Council of the Ministry of Education, and obtain test scores.” The master’s and doctoral guides never mention the CSCA, so the requirement is undergraduate-only. Second, ZSTU sets a language bar on the way out as well as on the way in: to graduate, students in Chinese-taught programs need HSK Level 5 or above at every level, while students in English-taught programs need HSK 4 to finish a bachelor’s degree and HSK 3 to finish a master’s or doctorate — so even an English-taught degree here commits you to learning Chinese. Deadlines are staggered by level: for the autumn intake, 30 April for master’s and doctoral applicants, 31 May for undergraduates, 15 June for the language and General Scholar programs and 30 June for exchange students; the spring intake on the non-degree routes closes on 31 December of the previous year. Age limits are 30 for bachelor’s, 35 for master’s and 40 for doctoral applicants, with the graduate limits described as flexible for healthy applicants with work experience and high academic ability. Applications are made through the online service platform at zstu.at0086.cn/student; scholarship applications go through a separate system at apply.zstu.edu.cn. Graduate applicants also need a supervisor acceptance letter, and ZSTU publishes its supervisor directory at yjsxt.zstu.edu.cn.

- High-school graduation or equivalent, and under the age of 30.
- Applicants under 18 are not excluded but must supply notarized legal-guardian documents for a guardian in China, certified through the Chinese embassy or consulate.
- China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) test scores — the Ministry of Education / China Scholarship Council entrance test, required of undergraduate applicants only.

Master’s degreeGraduate
Master’s degrees across textiles, materials, mechanical and computer engineering, chemistry, the life sciences, economics and management, design and the arts. The school pages mark English-taught programs with a ※ — currently including textile science and engineering, fine arts, computer science and technology, mechanical engineering, power engineering and engineering thermophysics, and the professional master’s in energy and power. A supervisor’s acceptance letter is a condition of applying, so start that conversation early.

Doctoral degreeGraduate
Supervisor-led doctoral study, concentrated in the university’s strongest fields — textile science and engineering, materials, mechanical engineering, design and chemistry. ZSTU’s 2026 doctoral admission guide gives a basic study period of four years on the application-and-assessment route. As at master’s level, an acceptance letter from a prospective supervisor is required with the application.

Chinese language program
No language requirement for admission; open to high-school graduates or equivalent under the age of 55, with notarized guardian documents needed for applicants under 18. Applications close on 15 June for the autumn intake and 31 December of the previous year for the spring intake. Short-term group programs with a customized curriculum are charged at RMB 610 per week.

General Scholar program
A non-degree visiting-student route for applicants under 30 who want to study alongside a degree program without enrolling for the degree. There is no formal test requirement, but the guide asks for “no communication difficulty” in the medium of instruction. Deadlines are 15 June for the autumn intake and 31 December for the spring intake.

Academic exchange program (short-term)
For students who keep their registration at a partner university and come to ZSTU for a semester of Chinese language and culture study, often as preparation for a later degree. Students enter on an X1 or X2 visa and cover their own travel, accommodation, residence permit, insurance, field trips and living costs. Applications close on 30 June for the autumn intake and 31 December of the previous year for the spring intake.

Scholarships
International students at ZSTU can apply for Chinese Government Scholarship channels, the Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship and three university awards. The provincial scholarship and the ZSTU President Scholarship are the two that matter most to a new degree applicant; the Freshmen and Current Students awards are tuition waivers you earn once you are enrolled. Note that ZSTU publishes coverage for its provincial and university awards but not for the Chinese Government Scholarship, which is set by the China Scholarship Council rather than by the university.
Chinese Government Scholarship — Chinese University Program
Coverage is set by the China Scholarship Council, not by ZSTU: the university’s own scholarship page states only the deadline and its agency code, and refers applicants to csc.edu.cn for the terms. Ask the International Students Office at admission@zstu.edu.cn for the current package before you rely on a figure.
Eligibility: Non-Chinese citizens applying for master’s or doctoral degrees may apply to ZSTU directly, quoting the university’s agency number 10338; applicants in other categories apply through the Chinese embassy or consulate in their home country. The deadline is 1 March each year.
Chinese Government Scholarship — Silk Road Program
Coverage is set by the China Scholarship Council. ZSTU’s School of International Education reports that the university has been approved for the “Silk Road” project for eight consecutive years, but does not publish the stipend or fee package on its English pages.
Eligibility: Applicants from countries along the Belt and Road, admitted to a ZSTU degree program; confirm the current year’s quota and eligibility with the International Students Office.
Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship
RMB 30,000 a year for master’s and doctoral students (Scholarship A), RMB 20,000 a year for bachelor’s students (Scholarship B) and RMB 6,000 a year for long-term non-degree students (Scholarship C). ZSTU’s page states the award amounts but does not break them down into tuition, accommodation and stipend, so ask how the money is applied against your fees.
Eligibility: Non-Chinese citizens in good health who obey Chinese law and hold no other Chinese scholarship, with competitive academic records. Age limits are 35 for master’s, 40 for doctoral and 30 for bachelor’s applicants; applicants to Chinese-taught programs need a valid HSK certificate at Band 4 or above, and graduate applicants need two professors’ recommendations. Application windows are 1–30 April for Scholarship A and 1–31 May for Scholarship B, through apply.zstu.edu.cn.
ZSTU President Scholarship
Tuition and the registration fee, on-campus dormitory accommodation (water and electricity excluded), comprehensive medical insurance and a living allowance of CNY 1,700 a month for master’s students and CNY 2,000 a month for doctoral students. Support runs for 3 years at master’s level and 3.5 years at doctoral level.
Eligibility: International students admitted to a ZSTU master’s or doctoral program, holding a bachelor’s or master’s degree respectively and meeting the HSK or English requirements; students who need a preliminary Chinese language year are excluded, and support is not extended beyond the standard program length. The application window is 1–30 April. Be aware that the text of ZSTU’s President Scholarship page still describes an intake for the autumn semester of 2016 and has not been rewritten since, so confirm the current terms and window with the office before you plan around them.
ZSTU Freshmen Scholarship
A tuition waiver for the second and third semesters, awarded semester by semester after review. ZSTU does not publish a cash value for it.
Eligibility: All undergraduate students admitted to ZSTU are eligible. To keep it through the semester review you must complete two-thirds of your selected course credits, keep attendance above 80%, average above 80 points in dormitory inspections, pass the ZSTU examination on laws and regulations, and have no disciplinary record.
ZSTU Current Students Scholarship
Scholarship A (master’s and doctoral) and Scholarship B (bachelor’s) each have two tiers: the first waives one academic year’s tuition and the second waives 50% of one academic year’s tuition. Scholarship C rewards competition and sports results, from RMB 500 to RMB 9,000 depending on the level of the competition and the placing.
Eligibility: Enrolled international students who have completed at least one year of study and are continuing, with competitive results in their professional courses, attendance above 80% in the previous year and no disciplinary violations. A and B cannot be held alongside another scholarship; C can. Applications run 1–31 May through apply.zstu.edu.cn.

Research at the university
ZSTU’s research is built around fibres, textiles and the machinery and chemistry that serve them, and it is in that cluster that the university competes internationally: textile science and engineering ranks third in the world in ShanghaiRanking’s 2026 subject tables, and chemistry, materials science and engineering sit in the global top 0.2% by ESI. The university holds one national key laboratory, three national-local joint engineering research centres approved by the National Development and Reform Commission and three national international science and technology cooperation bases, alongside more than fifty research institutes and centres.

The university’s defining field: the national-local joint engineering research centre for textile fibre materials and processing technology, the Ministry of Education key laboratory for advanced textile materials and preparation technology, and the MOE international joint laboratory for green textiles.

A Chinese-foreign cooperative institution without independent legal person status, run with Istituto Marangoni (France) as the ZSTU Marangoni Fashion Design Institute, plus four further Chinese-foreign joint programs.

The School of International Education trained 977 long- and short-term international students in 2024, 69% of them degree-seeking and nearly half at master’s or doctoral level. ZSTU passed China’s national quality certification for international student education in October 2023, with a six-year validity, and has been approved for the Chinese Government Scholarship “Silk Road” project for eight consecutive years.

ZSTU does not publish employment statistics for its international graduates on its English pages, so treat any outcome figure you see elsewhere with caution and ask the International Students Office directly. What the university does document is the support around study: Hangzhou is a centre of China’s textile, apparel and e-commerce economy, and the School of International Education runs a “Study at Sci-Tech” action plan built around innovation and entrepreneurship rather than a conventional careers service.

Campus life
International students live on campus in Hangzhou, in twin-bedded rooms with their own bathroom, and eat in the university canteens. The main Xiasha campus sits in the Xiasha higher-education zone of Qiantang District, a student district on the eastern edge of Hangzhou with the rest of the city about an hour away by metro.

Each room has a private restroom, air conditioning, a water heater, a refrigerator and furnishings; electricity is billed separately, and bedding is either brought by the student or bought from the university.
Dining
Three canteens serve the Xiasha campus — Guihuayuan (06:30–09:00, 10:30–13:00, 16:30–18:00), Meiguiyuan and Ziweige (both 06:30–09:00, 10:30–13:00, 16:30–22:00). Students buy a dining card to pay, and the surrounding higher-education zone is full of inexpensive restaurants.

Health care
A campus clinic west of the stadium (tel. 86843165) handles everyday care, with Xiasha Oriental Hospital and Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital nearby. Self-funded students must buy the Comprehensive Insurance Plan for Foreigners, which includes life cover of RMB 100,000 and accidental medical treatment.
Mental health centre
Open Monday to Friday, 14:00–15:30 and 18:30–19:50. Counselling is offered in Chinese only, which is worth knowing before you need it.
Getting around
ZSTU strongly recommends bicycles for moving around campus. Motorbikes and fuel-powered scooters are prohibited and driving without a Chinese licence is forbidden.
Everyday services
Two post offices serve the campus, and banking is done off campus — the university advises arriving with a few hundred RMB in cash and not carrying large sums. Emergency numbers are 119 for fire, 110 for police and 120 for an ambulance.

Master’s study costs RMB 25,000 a year and doctoral study RMB 30,000 a year. The long-term Chinese language program is RMB 7,000 a semester or RMB 14,000 a year. Every applicant also pays a RMB 300 application and registration fee.
Do I have to take an entrance test to apply for a bachelor’s degree at ZSTU?+
Yes. ZSTU’s bachelor’s guide requires undergraduate applicants to sit the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA), the standardized test run by the China Scholarship Council under the Ministry of Education, and submit the score report with the application. The requirement is undergraduate-only — the master’s and doctoral guides do not mention it.
What are the language requirements, and do they apply at graduation too?+
To enter a Chinese-taught program at any level you need new HSK Level 4 with a score of 180 or above. For English-taught programs you need TOEFL 80, TOEFL Essentials B2 or IELTS 5.5, unless you are a native English speaker or were educated in English. ZSTU also sets an exit requirement: HSK Level 5 to graduate from a Chinese-taught program at any level, HSK Level 4 to graduate from an English-taught bachelor’s degree, and HSK Level 3 to graduate from an English-taught master’s or doctoral program.
When are the application deadlines for the 2026 intake?+
For the autumn 2026 intake: 30 April 2026 for master’s and doctoral applicants, 31 May 2026 for bachelor’s applicants, 15 June 2026 for the Chinese language and General Scholar programs and 30 June 2026 for academic exchange students. The spring 2026 non-degree deadline was 31 December 2025. The Chinese Government Scholarship deadline is 1 March.
What scholarships can international students get at ZSTU?+
The Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship pays RMB 30,000 a year to master’s and doctoral students, RMB 20,000 to bachelor’s students and RMB 6,000 to long-term non-degree students. The ZSTU President Scholarship covers tuition, the registration fee, a dormitory place, medical insurance and a living allowance of CNY 1,700 a month for master’s and CNY 2,000 for doctoral students. ZSTU also participates in Chinese Government Scholarship channels including the “Silk Road” project, and runs a Freshmen Scholarship and a Current Students Scholarship that waive tuition for students already enrolled.
Is there an age limit for international applicants?+
Yes. Bachelor’s applicants must be under 30, master’s applicants under 35 and doctoral applicants under 40, with the graduate limits described as flexible for healthy applicants with work experience and high academic ability. The Chinese language program accepts applicants under 55. Applicants under 18 are not excluded but must provide notarized legal-guardian documents certified through a Chinese embassy or consulate.
Where do international students live and what does it cost?+
International students are housed in the Friendship Building or International Students Building No. 2 in Living Area II, in twin-bedded rooms with a private restroom, air conditioning, a water heater and a refrigerator. The cost is RMB 450 per month per person — RMB 2,700 a semester or RMB 5,400 a year — with electricity billed separately.
