About China University of Geosciences, Wuhan
China University of Geosciences traces its origin to the Beijing College of Geology, established in 1952 by merging the geology departments of Peking University, Tsinghua University, Tianjin University and Tangshan Railway Institute. It was designated a national key institution in 1960, moved to Hubei Province in 1970 as Hubei College of Geology, and settled permanently in Wuhan in 1974 as Wuhan College of Geology. It took its present name in 1987, operating in both Wuhan and Beijing with headquarters in Wuhan; in 2005 the headquarters ceased operating and the Wuhan and Beijing institutions became independent. That is why there are two universities with the same English name today — this guide is about the Wuhan one, whose international applications run through iec.cug.edu.cn and admission.cug.edu.cn. Oversight passed from the Ministry of Land and Resources to the Ministry of Education in 2000, and the university was selected for the national Double First-Class plan in 2017.
The university’s Chinese-language profile (data as of May 2026) describes two campuses in Wuhan — Nanwangshan and Future City (未来城) — with a combined campus area of 1.48 million square metres. It enrols more than 34,120 students: over 19,000 undergraduates, over 12,270 master’s students, over 2,850 doctoral students and over 1,000 international students, and employs more than 3,200 staff, 2,113 of them teachers. Its faculty includes 13 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and one of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. There are 76 undergraduate majors; two first-level disciplines — Geology, and Geological Resources and Geological Engineering — are in the national Double First-Class list.
Official pages count the international community differently, so treat any single figure as approximate: the Chinese profile (May 2026) says more than 1,000 international students, the English Facts and Figures page gives 1,035, and the School of International Education’s own About page says it serves more than 1,300 international students from over 100 countries and regions, around 85% of them from Belt and Road partner countries. CUG says it began enrolling international students in 1954, and its international-education unit, founded in 2002, became an independent school in 2024.

Admission, programs & tuition
CUG admits international students to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, and to non-degree study as Chinese-language students, preparatory (foundation) students, general and senior visiting scholars, and short summer or online programs. Every application goes through the CUG International Student Application System at admission.cug.edu.cn; Chinese Government Scholarship applicants also complete the CSC system, where CUG’s institution code is 10491. The standing Application Process page sets one window for all self-funded categories — applications open 1 January and close 15 June, with admission letters and the JW202 form issued by 10 July — and the CUG President Scholarship closes earlier, on 1 June. Note what is and is not published: CUG’s admissions list carries 2026 guides for the Chinese Language Program, the Global Summer School, China Link and the Silk Road and Atomic Energy CSC programs, but the most recent separate degree brochures (bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral) posted there are the 2025 editions. The degree figures below are therefore taken from the standing Application Process, Fee Standards and President Scholarship pages, which carry no year and apply to the current cycle. Age limits are firm per level: undergraduates must be over 18 and not over 25, master’s applicants no older than 35 and doctoral applicants no older than 40. Language is the other thing to plan for: the Application Process page states that applicants without the required HSK certificate must first complete one year of Chinese study and pass HSK 4 before starting their major.

Bachelor’s degreeUndergraduate
Four-year undergraduate degrees, taught in Chinese according to the Application Process page. The English site lists majors across the earth sciences (geology, geochemistry), earth resources (petroleum engineering, resource prospecting engineering), materials science (materials chemistry, applied chemistry, materials science and engineering) and environmental studies (hydrology and water resources engineering, groundwater science, environmental engineering, bioscience, atmospheric sciences), and the Chinese site posts 22 undergraduate training plans, including engineering, geophysics, mechanical engineering, industrial design and electronics. The President Scholarship page accepts IELTS or TOEFL for English-taught programs, but CUG does not publish a current list of English-taught bachelor’s majors, so ask the office before applying to one.

- Non-Chinese citizen with a valid foreign passport, in good physical and mental health, with no criminal record.
- High-school graduation or equivalent.
- Age over 18 and not over 25 (Application Process page); the President Scholarship page words this as “under 25”. The President Scholarship document list includes a guardian’s letter of guarantee for applicants under 18, so ask the office how an applicant turning 18 around enrolment is treated.
- Chinese-taught programs: HSK 4 or above with a score of at least 180 (President Scholarship page). Applicants without the required HSK level must complete one year of Chinese study and obtain HSK 4 before entering their major.
- English-taught programs: IELTS 6.0 or above, or TOEFL iBT 80 or above (President Scholarship page).

Three-year academic master’s degrees. The English site lists programs in geology, geological resources and geological engineering (mineral prospecting and exploration), petroleum and natural gas engineering, civil engineering, geological engineering, safety science and engineering, geophysics, applied economics, law, mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography and atmospheric sciences. The Application Process page lists master’s study as Chinese-taught; English-taught master’s options are not listed on the current pages, so confirm the language of your chosen program with the office.

Chinese Language Program (汉语进修生)
Chinese-language study for applicants aged 18 or over with a high-school diploma or equivalent; no HSK level is required to apply. It is also the route for degree applicants who do not yet have HSK 4. CUG posted a 2026 application guide for this program on 20 January 2026; it applies through admission.cug.edu.cn within the same 1 January – 15 June window as other self-funded applicants.

CUG’s fees are among the lower ones for a Double First-Class university and are split by humanities versus science: RMB 18,000 / 22,000 a year for bachelor’s, RMB 25,000 / 28,000 for master’s, and a flat RMB 35,000 for doctoral study. Add the RMB 400 application fee (non-refundable), medical insurance of RMB 800 a year, a residence permit of RMB 400 (validity under a year) or RMB 800 (a year or more), and accommodation of RMB 8,400 a year in a double room or RMB 12,000 in a single room — paid for at least six months at a time, with utilities charged separately. Non-degree study is priced on its own basis: RMB 16,000 a year for Chinese language, RMB 9,000 a semester for the preparatory program, RMB 16,000–30,000 a year for visiting scholars, and RMB 1,600 a week for summer school. Scholarships
CUG’s funding for international students comes in two layers: Chinese Government Scholarship channels administered through the China Scholarship Council, and the university’s own CUG President Scholarship. They are exclusive — President Scholarship holders cannot also hold a Chinese Government Scholarship at CUG. The CSC channels CUG has posted guides for are the Silk Road Program and the Atomic Energy Scholarship (2026 guides published on 30 April and 13 April 2026), China Link short-term exchange (2026), the High-level Postgraduate Program and the bilateral pre-admission letter route (2025 guides), and the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (2025). Each channel sets its own deadline in its guide, so read the guide for your channel rather than relying on the 15 June self-funded date. CUG does not list a Hubei provincial or Wuhan municipal scholarship on its current international pages; ask the office if one is open for your year.
Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) — full scholarship
Tuition, free university dormitory or an accommodation subsidy, a monthly stipend of RMB 2,500 (undergraduate), RMB 3,000 (master’s and general scholars) or RMB 3,500 (doctoral and senior scholars), and medical insurance (RMB 800 a year, or RMB 400 for programs under six months).
Eligibility: Non-Chinese citizens in good physical and mental health; age limits range from under 25 for undergraduates to under 50 for senior scholars. Apply through CSC with CUG’s institution code 10491, in addition to the CUG online system.
CSC Silk Road Program (丝绸之路项目)

CSC Atomic Energy Scholarship (原子能奖学金项目)

CSC High-level Postgraduate Program and bilateral (Type A) pre-admission

Eligibility: CUG posted guides for the High-level Postgraduate Program and for the bilateral program’s pre-admission letter in the 2025 cycle; bilateral applicants apply through their home country’s dispatching authority and may request a CUG pre-admission letter. Ask the office whether a newer guide applies to your intake.
China Link Short-term Scientific Exchange Scholarship (2026)
Full scholarship: tuition waiver, accommodation, medical insurance and a monthly stipend of RMB 3,000–3,500.
Eligibility: Undergraduates, master’s or PhD students, or faculty members enrolled or employed full-time at a CSC partner institution; under 45 (general scholars) or under 50 (senior scholars). Duration 1–12 months, starting no later than 31 August 2027. Apply in the CUG system, then in the CSC system as Type B with code 10491. Contact: Ms Zhang Zhongyuan.
CUG President Scholarship
Free on-campus housing only: a double room (valued at RMB 8,400 a year) for bachelor’s and master’s students, a single room (valued at RMB 12,000 a year) for PhD students. Tuition and living expenses are self-funded.
Eligibility: Degree applicants (bachelor’s under 25, master’s under 35, PhD under 40) with HSK 4 (180+) for Chinese-taught study or IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL iBT 80 for English-taught study; priority for geosciences, natural resources and environmental disciplines. Apply 1 January – 1 June each year through the CUG system; the RMB 400 application fee is paid after preliminary review. Cannot be combined with a Chinese Government Scholarship.

CUG does not publish employment or salary statistics for international graduates on its international-student pages, so treat any such figure you see elsewhere as unsourced. The School of International Education highlights alumni outcomes instead: its About page names Dr Sandy Edward Hinga, Minister of Trade and Investment of Sierra Leone, among its graduates, and in August 2026 the school reported that a Vietnamese alumnus working on China–Vietnam geological-resources cooperation was selected as a 2026 national “Study in China” typical case. The geoscience focus means many graduates go into geological surveys, mining, petroleum and environmental agencies in their home countries.

CUG has two campuses in Wuhan — Nanwangshan, beside East Lake at No. 388 Lumo Road where the School of International Education sits, and the newer Future City campus. International students live in the international student apartments under the university’s International Student Apartment Accommodation Management Regulations. The rules are posted only as images and a PDF, so ask the office which building you will be assigned to. Fees are the same whichever room you get: RMB 8,400 a year for a bed in a double room or RMB 12,000 a year for a single room, paid for at least six months at a time, with water and electricity charged separately. The President Scholarship covers a double room for bachelor’s and master’s students and a single room for PhD students.

How much is tuition at China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) for international students?+
Tuition depends on level and on whether the program is in the humanities or the sciences: bachelor’s RMB 18,000 (humanities) or RMB 22,000 (science) a year; master’s RMB 25,000 or RMB 28,000 a year; doctoral RMB 35,000 a year in every discipline. The Chinese Language Program is RMB 16,000 a year and the preparatory program RMB 9,000 a semester.
