About Capital Medical University
Capital Medical University (首都医科大学, often abbreviated CCMU) was founded in 1960 as Beijing Second Medical College (北京第二医学院). It was renamed Capital Medical College in 1985 and became Capital Medical University in 1994. It is run by the Beijing Municipal Government and co-constructed with the National Health Commission and the Ministry of Education, and in 2020 Beijing designated it a high-level research university. The university’s own introduction does not describe it as a national Double First-Class university.
What sets CCMU apart is the size of its clinical network. Alongside 12 schools and 2 research centres on the main campus, it has 23 clinical medical schools attached to 22 affiliated hospitals — among them Xuanwu Hospital (the First Clinical Medical School), Beijing Friendship Hospital, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Beijing Children’s Hospital and Beijing Stomatological Hospital — plus 7 national medical centres and 6 national clinical medical research centres. For a medical student, this is where clinical teaching and later placements happen.
According to the introduction updated in June 2026, the university enrols 16,763 full-time students: 8,548 graduate students, 7,559 undergraduates, 261 higher-vocational students and 395 international students. It employs 9,158 teachers across the university and its affiliated hospitals, including 10 academicians and 1,296 professors, and offers 27 undergraduate majors. International students are taught and housed by the International School (国际学院), established in 2005, which began formal enrolment in 2007 and sits on the university’s West Campus in Fengtai District.

The International School began formal enrolment in 2007; its introduction states the English-taught MBBS is recognised by the WHO, the US medical council, the Thai Medical Council and others.

Capital Medical University admits self-funded international students to three routes for 2026, each with its own guide and its own deadline: the English-taught Clinical Medicine (MBBS) program, Chinese-taught bachelor’s degrees, and master’s and doctoral study. The 2026 guides were posted on the International School site on 21 January 2026 and on the online application system (admissions.ccmu.edu.cn) on 3 July 2026; the MBBS guide on the application system was re-uploaded in September 2026 with the same 15 August 2026 deadline. Both undergraduate routes require results from the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) — mathematics compulsory, plus physics or chemistry — and the Chinese-taught route adds a university entrance examination and HSK 5. All undergraduate applicants must be aged 18 to 30. Graduate applicants need HSK 5 or above, because the graduate guide makes no provision for English-taught master’s or doctoral study, and applicants to clinical medicine, stomatology or Chinese medicine professional degrees must hold a matching mainland-China degree or one certified as equivalent by the Ministry of Education’s Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange. The 2026 guides describe degree study only: the International School’s last published preparatory (foundation) guide is for 2023, and no Chinese-language or exchange program for 2026 is listed, so ask the office about any non-degree study.

A six-year English-taught Clinical Medicine program leading to a Bachelor of Medicine. The course list runs from systematic anatomy, histology and embryology, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology and neurobiology through microbiology, immunology, pathology and pharmacology to internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, neurology, psychiatry, infectious diseases, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, dermatovenereology, stomatology, nuclear medicine and evidence-based medicine. The International School’s teaching page adds foundation courses in Chinese, general information on China and Chinese medicine.

- Non-Chinese citizen with a valid passport, aged between 18 and 30.
- Former citizens of mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan must have obtained their current foreign citizenship before 30 April 2022 and have lived outside China for at least 2 years between 30 April 2022 and 30 April 2026 (MOE Document No. 12, 2020).
- High-school graduation or higher, with qualifying grades in mathematics, physics and chemistry.
- English: TOEFL 80 or above or IELTS 6.0 or above; native English speakers are exempt.
- CSCA results: mathematics compulsory, plus physics or chemistry. The guide states the CSCA is held five times a year — January, March, April, June and December.
- Good health, with no colour blindness, infectious disease or history of mental disorder; physical examination with blood tests within 6 months.
- Certificate of non-criminal record within 6 months, and a Statement of Financial Support backed by a bank deposit certificate of at least USD 15,000.
Bachelor’s degrees taught in ChineseUndergraduate
Four Chinese-taught bachelor’s programs: Clinical Medicine (5 years, Bachelor of Medicine), Stomatology (5 years, Bachelor of Medicine), Chinese Medicine (5 years, Bachelor of Medicine) and Nursing (4 years, Bachelor of Science). Note that Chinese-taught clinical medicine is five years, one year shorter than the English-taught MBBS. Admission combines the CSCA with a university entrance examination in mathematics, physics and chemistry, expected in mid-June 2026, with an interview added where necessary.

- Non-Chinese citizen holding a valid foreign passport, in principle aged 18 to 30 (inclusive) as of September 2026.
- HSK Level 5 or above; the guide sets no minimum score within the level.
- High-school completion with satisfactory grades in mathematics, physics and chemistry, and a pass in the university’s entrance examination.
- CSCA results: mathematics compulsory, plus physics or chemistry.
- Former Chinese citizens: the Chinese guide words Document No. 12 differently from the MBBS guide — it asks for a valid foreign passport or proof of nationality held for at least 4 years, with at least 2 years’ actual residence abroad in the 4 years up to 30 April of the year of entry. Check which wording applies to you with the office.
- Health examination including hepatitis B, HIV, syphilis and tuberculosis tests; no colour blindness or infectious disease.
- Non-criminal record certificate within 6 months and a financial guarantee backed by a bank deposit of at least USD 15,000.
Master’s degreeGraduate
Master’s study for self-funded international students with supervisors at the Basic Medical School, School of Public Health, School of Nursing and affiliated hospitals such as Xuanwu, Beijing Friendship, Tongren, Tiantan, Anzhen, Beijing Children’s, Beijing Stomatological, Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology, Andingmen, Beijing Chinese Medicine, Beijing Chest and Jishuitan hospitals. The 2026 master’s directory lists each supervisor by name with research direction and email, and marks academic (thesis) and professional degree programs separately.

- Clinical medicine, stomatology and Chinese medicine professional master’s degrees: a matching medical bachelor’s degree obtained in mainland China, or a qualification certified by the Ministry of Education’s Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange as equivalent.
- A personal statement with research plan of about 800 characters in Chinese, two recommendation letters from professors or associate professors in the field, and the CCMU letter of intent to accept an international student.
- A comprehensive assessment by the school of professional level, overall quality and language ability, including presentations and interviews.

- A personal statement with research plan of about 1,500 characters in Chinese, two recommendation letters, the letter of intent to accept an international student, and your research output.

Registration
Late Aug 2026New graduate students register at the end of August 2026; undergraduates register on the date printed on the admission letter. Chinese-taught undergraduates who arrive more than two weeks late forfeit their place.
Tuition is RMB 50,000 per year for the English-taught MBBS, RMB 42,000 per year for the Chinese-taught bachelor’s degrees, RMB 50,000 per year for master’s and RMB 60,000 per year for doctoral study (2026 guides). The undergraduate guides add insurance at a choice of RMB 800, 1,000 or 1,200 per year and on-campus housing at RMB 7,500 per bed per year in a triple room or RMB 15,000 in a double room. Graduate applicants pay an RMB 800 application fee in cash, non-refundable; neither undergraduate guide states an application fee. The MBBS guide warns that fees paid after registration are not refundable or transferable. The graduate guide does not list accommodation or insurance fees, so ask the office.

Scholarships
The 2026 guides name one scholarship for international students: the Beijing Government Scholarship, which the university administers under Beijing’s management measures for that award. All three guides are addressed to self-funded applicants, and none sets out Chinese Government (CSC) scholarship channels or a CCMU-funded award, so ask the Office of International Student Affairs before relying on any other funding.

Research at CCMU is clinical and translational, and most of it takes place in the affiliated hospitals. The university has 7 national medical centres and 6 national clinical medical research centres, 8 national key disciplines and 2 national key (cultivation) disciplines. Campus life
International students live and study at the International School on the university’s West Campus, at No. 331 Xitieying, Youanmenwai, in Fengtai District, south-west Beijing. The school occupies 34,000 square metres and can house more than 800 overseas students. It has 20 multimedia classrooms, including 2 computer rooms, 3 bridge-course laboratories and a language lab, plus dining, recreation and sports facilities. Dorm rooms have a private bathroom, air conditioning, a desk, a chest and internet access, and residents share a kitchen, coin-operated washers and a drying room. Accommodation can be reserved in advance through the online application system, which also offers an airport pick-up booking.

How much does the MBBS cost at Capital Medical University?+
The six-year English-taught Clinical Medicine (MBBS) program costs RMB 50,000 per year in tuition under the 2026 guide. On top of that, insurance is RMB 800, 1,000 or 1,200 per year depending on the plan you choose, and a dorm bed costs RMB 7,500 per year in a triple room or RMB 15,000 in a double room. The guide states no application fee, and fees are not refundable once you have registered. The Chinese-taught bachelor’s degrees cost RMB 42,000 per year.
Do I need the CSCA test to apply?+
Yes, for both undergraduate routes. The 2026 MBBS guide and the Chinese-taught bachelor’s guide each require CSCA results with mathematics as a compulsory subject and physics or chemistry as an elective. The guides state the test is held five times a year, in January, March, April, June and December. Plan a sitting well before the MBBS deadline of 15 August 2026 or the Chinese-taught deadline of 10 June 2026. Master’s and doctoral applicants do not need the CSCA.
What are the language requirements?+
For the English-taught MBBS you need TOEFL 80 or IELTS 6.0, unless English is your native language. The Chinese-taught bachelor’s degrees require HSK Level 5 or above. What is the age limit?+
Both undergraduate routes are for applicants aged 18 to 30; the Chinese-taught guide measures age as of September 2026. Master’s applicants should generally be under 40 and doctoral applicants generally under 45.
When are the 2026 deadlines?+
Master’s and doctoral applications close on 30 April 2026, Chinese-taught bachelor’s applications on 10 June 2026, with an entrance exam expected in mid-June, and English-taught MBBS applications on 15 August 2026. Graduate students register at the end of August 2026, and undergraduates on the date shown on their admission letter.
Are there scholarships for international students?+
The 2026 guides name only the Beijing Government Scholarship, which the university administers under Beijing’s rules, and they do not state its coverage. The guides are written for self-funded students and describe no Chinese Government Scholarship channel or CCMU award, so contact overseas@ccmu.edu.cn before counting on funding.
Can I do a clinical master’s degree with a foreign medical degree?+
Only if your degree is recognised. Applicants to the professional master’s degrees in clinical medicine, stomatology or Chinese medicine need a matching medical bachelor’s degree obtained in mainland China, or one certified by the Ministry of Education’s Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange as equivalent. The same rule applies to professional doctorates, at master’s level.
