About Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications
Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (北京邮电大学), usually shortened to BUPT, was founded in 1955 and was formerly known as the Beijing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications. The university’s own 2026 Admission Brochure for International Students describes it as one of the key universities in China, directly administered by the Ministry of Education, a member of the "211 Project" and of the "985 Innovative Platforms for Advanced Disciplines Project", with information technology as its main feature. Its motto is 厚德博学、敬业乐群 — "Great Virtue, Profound Knowledge, Total Commitment, Harmonious Cooperation".
BUPT is not a single-site university. The brochure names four campuses — Xitucheng, Shahe, Hongfu and Xiaoxitian — plus advanced research institutes in Wuxi (Jiangsu Province) and Shenzhen (Guangdong Province). The International Education Center, which handles international admissions, sits on the Xitucheng Campus in Haidian District, and the brochure gives Xitucheng Road 10 as the university’s mailing address.
The brochure counts approximately 28,000 full-time undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and international students, with international students coming from more than 50 countries. Other published counts differ, so quote them with their source: QS’s profile page gives 25,745 students (56.1% undergraduate, 43.9% postgraduate), 370 international students and 2,154 staff, while Wikipedia gives about 27,000 students (15,000 undergraduates and 12,000 postgraduates) and about 2,400 faculty. BUPT’s two "Double First-Class" disciplines, as named in the brochure, are Information and Communication Engineering and Computer Science and Technology — the two fields that also dominate its English-taught offer.

An ICT specialist
Information technology is BUPT’s defining feature: its Double First-Class disciplines are Information and Communication Engineering and Computer Science and Technology, and schools such as Cyberspace Security, Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Engineering and Automation make up much of the undergraduate list.
One flat undergraduate fee
Chinese-taught and English-taught bachelor’s programs cost the same, RMB 24,600 a year — BUPT does not charge an English-medium premium at undergraduate level.

A small English-taught list
English-medium study exists at every degree level but is narrow: one bachelor’s major, two master’s programs and four doctoral disciplines in the 2026 brochure. Most programs are taught in Chinese and require HSK 5.

BUPT admits international students to four-year bachelor’s degrees, two- to three-year master’s degrees and four-year doctoral degrees, taught in Chinese or — for a short list of programs — in English, and to non-degree study as a Chinese-language student, advanced (visiting) student or visiting scholar. All applications are made online through the university’s international student system at ois.bupt.edu.cn, and the 2026 Admission Brochure gives one window for everything: "The application period is from October 20 to April 20 next year" — for the September 2026 intake, 20 October 2025 to 20 April 2026. Two rules stand out. First, the CSCA: "Applicants for undergraduate programs must take the ‘China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA)’ prior to submitting their applications" — the test comes before the application, not after, and it does not replace the HSK or English test for your chosen language of instruction. Second, the age limits are generous by Chinese standards: not exceeding 30 for undergraduates, 35 for master’s and 40 for doctoral applicants. The brochure does not set a minimum undergraduate age or describe a guardian procedure for applicants under 18, so if that applies to you, ask the International Education Center before applying. After review, BUPT issues an Admission Notice and a JW202 form (Confirmation Form for Study in China); you take both, with the Physical Examination Record for Foreigners, to a Chinese embassy or consulate for your visa and then enrol "within the time notified in the BUPT Admission Notice".

Chinese-language study without a degree. The 2026 brochure gives the annual fee and the March/September start months but does not describe levels, class hours or whether a single semester can be booked — ask the International Education Center (yzhang2014@bupt.edu.cn handles scholar, exchange and short-term programs; asyj@bupt.edu.cn handles degree students). The same fee table also lists a separate "Chinese language (for International Students)" line at RMB 20,000 / year; the brochure does not say whether that line is the four-year Chinese Language bachelor’s major on the undergraduate list or a different course, so confirm which one you are applying for.

BUPT’s 2026 fees are simple: RMB 24,600 a year for any bachelor’s program, Chinese- or English-taught; RMB 30,000 for Chinese-taught literature master’s programs and RMB 32,800 for science, engineering and English-taught master’s programs; and RMB 41,000 for every doctoral program. Every application carries a non-refundable RMB 500 fee. Budget on top for health insurance (compulsory, RMB 800 a year) and a dormitory bed at RMB 50 a day — roughly RMB 18,250 over a full calendar year if you keep the bed all year. Non-degree study is priced separately: RMB 16,400 a year for Chinese language training, RMB 28,700 for general advanced studies, RMB 36,900 for senior advanced studies and RMB 3,690 a month for visiting scholars. Scholarships
BUPT’s 2026 English-language Admission Brochure for International Students does not describe any scholarship — it lists tuition for self-funded students and nothing on fee waivers, stipends or award deadlines. Two schemes are run for international students in Beijing generally: the Chinese Government Scholarship, administered by the China Scholarship Council, and the Beijing Government Scholarship for International Students, which the Beijing Municipal Government publicises on its Study in Beijing pages (its latest application-procedures notice there is dated 6 February 2026). BUPT does not set out in its English brochure which channels it takes part in for 2026, what they cover, or when its internal deadlines fall, so ask the International Education Center (asyj@bupt.edu.cn for degree applicants) before you rely on funding — and do so early in the 20 October – 20 April window.
Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)
Set by the China Scholarship Council for each channel; BUPT’s 2026 brochure does not restate the coverage or its participation terms.
Eligibility: Applications go either through your home country’s dispatching authority or, where a university channel is open, through the university. Ask the International Education Center which CSC channels BUPT is accepting for the September 2026 intake and its internal deadline.
Beijing Government Scholarship for International Students
Terms are set by the Beijing Municipal Government; BUPT does not publish its allocation or coverage in the 2026 brochure.

International students live in university dormitories, and the International Education Center itself is housed on the fourth floor of the No. 1 International Dorm on the Xitucheng Campus in Haidian District — the university’s mailing address, Xitucheng Road 10. The 2026 Admission Brochure quotes one price for a dormitory bed, RMB 50 per bed per day, with 24-hour hot water, Wi-Fi and air-conditioning in the rooms. It does not state room types (single or double), which campus you will be housed on, or whether utilities are extra, and BUPT spreads teaching across four campuses — Xitucheng, Shahe, Hongfu and Xiaoxitian — so ask the office which campus your program is taught on before arranging housing. Health insurance is mandatory for all international students at RMB 800 a year.
