Beijing University of Chemical Technology was founded in 1958 as the Beijing Institute of Chemical Technology, under the Ministry of Chemical Industry — in the university’s own words, a high-level university created by New China to cultivate advanced chemical engineering professionals. It was designated one of the national key universities in 1960, awarded its first master’s degrees in 1981 and its first doctorates in 1987, and took its present name in 1994. It entered Project 211 in 1996, moved under the Ministry of Education in 1998, became a Project 985 Innovation Platform for Priority Disciplines in 2008, and was listed in the Double First-Class initiative in 2017.

The university’s Chinese-language profile (dated March 2026) describes 18 colleges and departments, 61 undergraduate majors (six of them international cooperative programs), eight first-level doctoral degree programs and 21 first-level master’s programs. Chemical Engineering and Technology is its Double First-Class discipline. About 2,800 staff include eight academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the student body numbers more than 16,000 undergraduates and more than 10,000 graduate students, over 2,000 of them doctoral candidates.

BUCT is spread over three locations in Beijing’s Chaoyang, Haidian and Changping districts. The main address is No. 15 Beisanhuan East Road in Chaoyang District; the international-student fee pages price dorms on the East Campus and on the newer campus separately, and single rooms are listed as available only in Changping. Although the university has broadened into management, economics, law, the arts, education, philosophy and medicine, its international programs remain concentrated in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, bioengineering and computing.

BUCT admits international students to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and to non-degree study, all through the online application system at study.buct.edu.cn, run by the Office of International Students in the School of International Education. For the 2026–2027 academic year the degree deadline is 30 June 2026; the School of International Education’s fee page describes the application window as 1 February to 30 June each year. After a preliminary review you pay the RMB 500 application fee, then sit a comprehensive interview (undergraduates also take an online academic proficiency test); successful applicants are notified by email and then receive the admission letter and JW201/JW202 visa form. Two points matter most. First, undergraduate applicants must submit China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) scores in the subjects designated for their major, and Chinese-taught majors also require the CSCA professional Chinese test. Second, graduate study is supervisor-led: both master’s and doctoral applicants need an acceptance letter from a BUCT supervisor, and the master’s page says applications without one will not be considered. Age limits are 18–25 for bachelor’s study (with a Beijing guardian route for applicants under 18), under 35 for master’s and under 40 for doctoral study. The HSK requirement is Level 4 with at least 180 at every degree level — but English-taught doctoral study asks for IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90, compared with IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 85 for bachelor’s and master’s study.

These are the dates Beijing University of Chemical Technology published for the 2026 intake. That cycle has closed. Use them as a guide to when each step falls in the year, and check the official pages for the 2027 dates before you plan around them.

BUCT offers international students four main funding routes: the Chinese Government Scholarship (Type A through embassies and Type B through the university, including the CSC High-Level Graduate Program and the Silk Road program), the Beijing Government Scholarship for undergraduates, the BUCT Presidential Scholarship for doctoral candidates, and the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship for language students. BUCT’s CSC institution code is 10010. All university-channel applications also require a complete application in the BUCT system at study.buct.edu.cn, and benefits for the following year depend on passing an annual review.

Research at BUCT grows out of its founding mission in the chemical industry, and its strongest platforms are in chemical engineering, polymers and advanced materials. The university’s English research pages name two state key laboratories — Organic-Inorganic Composites and Chemical Resource Engineering — and two national engineering platforms for carbon fibre and for tyre design and manufacturing, alongside more than a dozen provincial and ministerial laboratories and engineering research centres covering soft matter, catalysis, bioprocessing, membranes and environmental chemistry. The newer Chinese-language profile (March 2026) counts four national key laboratories and 16 provincial and ministerial laboratories. For a graduate applicant this concentration matters: the doctoral and English-taught master’s programs map closely onto these laboratories, so finding a supervisor in one of them is the natural route in.

BUCT’s March 2026 profile counts partnerships with about 190 institutions in 70 countries and regions and around 100 student exchange programs. The School of International Education, founded in 2011, runs the university’s international-student admissions and its Sino-foreign cooperative programs, and hosts the "Belt and Road" School and a "Belt and Road" national talent-training base. Its English pages describe four Sino-foreign cooperative bachelor’s and master’s programs and ties with more than 40 universities in more than 10 countries, including the USA, Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Ireland. The French-taught Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering major (the Sino-French Elite Program) is the clearest example open to international applicants.

BUCT does not publish employment or salary figures for its international graduates, so treat any number you see elsewhere as unsourced. Careers support runs through the university’s Employment Information Network at career.buct.edu.cn, which serves all students: job postings, on-campus recruitment talks and job fairs, one-to-one career consultations by appointment, career assessment, and information on internships with international organisations. The site is in Chinese, so its value for an international student grows with their Chinese level.

International students live on campus, and what you pay depends on the room. The 2026 guides price a bed in a double room at RMB 21,600 a year (RMB 60 per bed per day) and a single room at RMB 25,200 a year (RMB 70 per room per day), with single rooms available only on the Changping campus; Chinese language students pay RMB 10,800 a semester for a double room. The School of International Education’s fee page labels the two rates East Campus and new campus, so ask which campus your program is taught on before you arrive. The main East Campus is on Beisanhuan East Road in Chaoyang District; the university also has sites in Haidian and in suburban Changping. BUCT’s English pages do not publish room facilities, dining or building details for the international dormitories, so ask the Office of International Students about them after admission.
