About Zhengzhou University
Zhengzhou University (郑州大学, ZZU) in its current form dates from 10 July 2000, when three institutions merged. The original Zhengzhou University was founded in 1956 as the first comprehensive university set up by the state after 1949 and joined Project 211 in 1999. Zhengzhou University of Technology was founded in 1963. Henan Medical University traced its medical teaching back to 1928 in Kaifeng and moved to Zhengzhou in 1957. ZZU is a Project 211 and Double First-Class university, co-built by the Ministry of Education and Henan Province.
The university covers more than 8,500 mu across four campuses in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan. Most international students are on the Main Campus at 100 Science Avenue; the others are the South, North and East Campuses, and English-taught medical students spend their clinical years on the East Campus. According to the university introduction (data to June 2026), ZZU has more than 43,000 undergraduates, 30,000 graduate students and 2,400 international students from 85 countries, in 48 schools and 128 undergraduate majors, with more than 4,700 full-time teachers.

Admission, programs & tuition
ZZU admits international students to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and to non-degree foundation, Chinese language and visiting programs. The School of International Education (SIE) on the Main Campus handles all of them, and every application goes through the ZZU Online Application System at zzu.17gz.org. The rules are spread across several official pages that do not always agree: - The 2026 International Master and PhD Admissions guide (posted 29 October 2025) is the cycle-specific document. - The international site’s Fees page carries the tuition scale. - The English-taught bachelor’s announcement on the international site is headed "2025 International EMI Bachelor Programs" (23 October 2024). It is the latest English-taught bachelor’s notice found for this guide. - The SIE’s Chinese-language program pages, re-posted in October 2024, sometimes give different age and language limits. Where pages conflict, this guide gives both. Undergraduate applicants must now sit the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) before they apply. Master’s and doctoral applicants are told to get an acceptance letter from a ZZU professor first. Doctoral study has March and September intakes; bachelor’s and master’s programs start in September only.

- CSCA scores: Mathematics for everyone, plus Professional Chinese for Chinese-taught programs and Physics or Chemistry depending on the major. Fees are RMB 450 for one subject and RMB 700 for two or more.
- English-taught (EMI announcement): age 18–24; IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 82 or an English-speaking country; and 70%+ in maths, physics, chemistry and biology. SIE pages (October 2024) give TOEFL 83, and for clinical medicine ages 18–29 and 55% in each science.
- Chinese-taught programs (SIE undergraduate page, October 2024): aged 18–30, with new HSK Level 4 at 180 points or above.
- Henan Government Scholarship applicants must be no older than 25.
Master’s degreeGraduate
Supervisor-led study in Chinese or English. The English-taught medical master’s takes three years: one year of basic courses on the East Campus, then two in a hospital or school, in basic, clinical and preventive medicine, stomatology or pharmacy. - Chinese-taught: HSK Level 5 with more than 210 points. English-taught: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90 (SIE doctoral page).
- Age: under 45 on the SIE doctoral page and for the Henan Government Scholarship; under 40 for the President Scholarship.
- English-taught medical doctorate (SIE, October 2024): a medical master’s degree, age under 50, and IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 83.
- A research proposal (at least 2,000 words for the President Scholarship), transcripts for both previous degrees, and two academic recommendation letters.
Non-degree programs
2026 One-Year Science & Engineering Foundation Program
A one-year bridge to the Civil Engineering, Software Engineering, Architecture and Urban & Rural Planning bachelor’s programs, whose tuition the page gives as CNY 25,000 a year. It has 200 places and 16–20 teaching hours a week, covering mathematics, physics, chemistry, daily Chinese and English modules, and workshops with lab visits. Applicants must be 18–23 with a secondary-school diploma, IELTS 5.5 or equivalent and good science results. Applications run from 1 March to 30 June 2026. Registration is on 7–9 September 2026 and final exams are in July 2027. To move on to the degree, students must pass the CSCA. Those with good final-exam results may receive a bachelor’s scholarship. The international site also announces a 2026 Business & Management foundation year, which could not be retrieved for this guide.

Other foundation and Chinese preparatory programs
The Fees page shows the Business foundation at RMB 3,000 in its Chinese-instructed column and RMB 6,000 in its English-instructed column. The SIE tuition table (October 2024) instead gives RMB 15,000 a year for Chinese and medical preparatory study. The medical foundation runs 1 September – 20 July and asks for age 18+ and IELTS 5.5. Chinese preparatory study lasts one year from HSK 3, or two years below it. Both lead to a degree only if the student passes the final or entrance exam.

General Chinese Language Program
Six levels from elementary to advanced, with 20 class hours a week and 11 electives, including calligraphy, martial arts, HSK preparation and business Chinese. Semesters run March–June and September–December, and individuals, groups and mid-term joiners are accepted. The Henan Government Scholarship can reduce the tuition to RMB 5,000 or 10,000 a year for up to one year.

General and senior visiting students / research scholars
General visitors need a bachelor’s degree and HSK 5, or IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90. Senior visitors and scholars need a master’s degree or associate-professor rank, and HSK 5, IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 100. The SIE pages give an application window of 30 January – 30 July.

Documents to prepare
- Online application at zzu.17gz.org. Chinese Government Scholarship applicants also apply at campuschina.org (ZZU agency code 10459).
- Passport. The 2026 registration notice asks for at least seven months’ validity counted from 1 November 2026, and at least six months for the residence permit.
- Highest diploma or degree certificate (or proof of expected graduation) and transcripts. Doctoral applicants submit both undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
- Language test report: HSK for Chinese-taught programs; IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo for English-taught ones.
- CSCA score report (undergraduate applicants).
- Graduate applicants: personal statement, research proposal, two recommendation letters and a supervisor acceptance letter.
- Foreigner Physical Examination Form and a non-criminal record certificate, each valid for six months (How to Apply page). At registration the medical report must have at least three months’ validity left.
- Authorized translations of any document not in English or Chinese. Do not post originals; forged documents lead to rejection.

ZZU prices every degree on one three-category scale: - Category 1: philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history and management - Category 2: science, engineering and agriculture - Category 3: art and medicine English-taught programs cost RMB 5,000 a year more at every level. Annual tuition is RMB 18,000–30,000 (Chinese) or 23,000–35,000 (English) for bachelor’s degrees, RMB 25,000–34,000 or 30,000–39,000 for master’s, and RMB 30,000–45,000 or 35,000–50,000 for doctorates. ZZU’s scholarship index lists five schemes: the Chinese Government Scholarship, the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, the Henan Government Scholarship, the Zhengzhou University President Scholarship and the University Scholarships for Excellent International Students. In the 2026 graduate guide, the Chinese Government Scholarship is a full award for master’s and doctoral applicants, the Henan Government Scholarship a partial award for master’s applicants, and the President Scholarship a full award for PhD applicants. The Henan scheme also funds bachelor’s and Chinese language study. Applications go through zzu.17gz.org with your admission file. The 2026 deadlines are 28 February (Type B CSC and President round 1), 30 April (Type A CSC) and 31 May (President round 2 and Henan). The President Scholarship’s standing page gives other windows: 15 October – 15 December for March entry and 1 March – 15 June for September entry. Work to the earlier date and confirm with the office.
Chinese Government Scholarship — Type B (university program)
Full scholarship: tuition waived, free on-campus accommodation, a living allowance at the national standard, and comprehensive medical insurance.
Eligibility: Master’s and doctoral applicants applying directly to ZZU, with around 50 places a year. Apply on both zzu.17gz.org and campuschina.org (agency code 10459) by 28 February 2026.
Chinese Government Scholarship — Type A (bilateral program)
Full or partial scholarship, with terms set by the bilateral agreement.
Eligibility: Applicants nominated through the Chinese embassy or dispatching authority in their home country, which sets its own timetable (typically November–April). ZZU’s Type A deadline is 30 April 2026. The SIE page asks undergraduate Type A applicants for HSK Level 3.
Henan Government Scholarship
Tuition only, including internship fees; no accommodation or living allowance is mentioned. - Doctoral: CNY 40,000 a year for 4 years - Master’s: tuition up to RMB 30,000 a year for up to 3 years, and you pay anything above that - Bachelor’s: up to CNY 15,000 a year for 4 years (architecture up to 5). On promoted programs it leaves RMB 5,000 (Type A) or RMB 10,000 (Type B) a year to pay - Chinese language: up to one year, leaving the same RMB 5,000 or 10,000 to pay Under the EMI announcement, the top 20 in Civil Engineering and in Tourism Management pay no tuition; other winners there and in Pharmacy, International Trade and Software Engineering pay RMB 5,000.
Eligibility: Non-Chinese citizens in good health with no criminal record. Age limits are 25 for bachelor’s, 35 for master’s and 45 for doctoral applicants. ZZU’s submission deadline is 31 May 2026. The province completes its review by 31 May, and admission letters and visa documents go out by 10 July. The SIE’s Chinese version (October 2024) gives an application window of late January to late April and also lists an associate-degree grade (RMB 10,000). It asks for the scholarship form and a pre-admission notice.
President Scholarship of Zhengzhou University (doctoral)
Full tuition, CNY 1,000 a month for housing and CNY 3,500 a month for living costs, for 4 academic years. The SIE’s Chinese page for the ZZU International Doctoral Scholarship gives the same amounts. Under that page, students pay their own registration, textbook, thesis defence, health check, outpatient and residence permit costs.
Eligibility: PhD applicants under 40 with a master’s degree (an 18-year master’s for applicants from Pakistan) who are not registered for a PhD elsewhere. Chinese-taught programs require HSK 5 with 210 or more, and English-taught programs IELTS 6.5. You need a research proposal of at least 2,000 words. There are around 100 places a year across the March and September intakes. The 2026 deadlines are 28 February (round 1, applying for Type B CSC at the same time) and 31 May (round 2).
University Scholarships for Excellent International Students
Listed on ZZU’s scholarship index. Its terms page could not be retrieved for this guide; ask the admissions office for the amounts.
Eligibility: A university-funded award for outstanding international students. The criteria are not published on the pages used here.
International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
Terms are set by the scholarship scheme; ZZU is a host institution.
Eligibility: Listed on ZZU’s scholarship index for students of Chinese language and international Chinese education.

Research at the university
The university introduction (data to June 2026) lists these national platforms: the National Supercomputing Center in Zhengzhou, the National Engineering Research Center for Rubber and Plastic Molds and the National Center for Drug Safety Evaluation. It also lists collaborative innovation centres for resource materials and for underground engineering disaster prevention, and the Chinese Character Civilization Research Center. ZZU has three world-class disciplines (chemistry, materials science and engineering, and clinical medicine). Nineteen of its disciplines are in the ESI global top 1% and five in the top 0.1%, ranking it 123rd in the world and 20th in China. Graduate applicants must secure a supervisor before applying.

The School of International Education was formally established in October 2005 and counted 2,196 students from more than 80 countries in April 2024. Its 2026 graduation report features graduates from Indonesia, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Vietnam and India.
Victoria University of Wellington (郑州大学惠灵顿学院)
ZZU’s first Sino-foreign cooperative institution, approved by the Ministry of Education in April 2023. It offers architecture, landscape architecture and industrial design and admits about 230 undergraduates a year; the approval notice does not say whether international students are admitted.

Career
Career & alumni
ZZU does not publish employment or salary figures for its international graduates. The international site has Career Guidance and Authentication Test pages, but no placement statistics. For medical students, the English-taught MBBS ends with a one-year internship in an affiliated hospital. If you plan to practise medicine at home, check your own country’s rules for recognising foreign medical degrees; ZZU’s pages do not cover them. The university introduction counts more than two million alumni.

Most international students live and study on the Main Campus, where the School of International Education is in Building 17 of the Liuyuan (柳园) residential area. English-taught medical students move to the East Campus for their clinical years. The official Fees page gives on-campus dormitories at RMB 5,000 or 10,000 a year. The 2026 foundation page gives the same two tiers as CNY 15 or 30 a day and says off-campus flat prices vary. The SIE dormitory page dates from 2014, so treat its building-by-building rates as indicative. Rooms have a bathroom, shower, air-conditioning, and wired and Wi-Fi internet. Under the SIE’s dormitory rules: - Students normally share double rooms; a single room must be requested in writing and costs extra. - Building doors open at 6:00 and close at 23:00. - Overnight guests are not allowed. The Accommodation Office (Room 106, Building 17) arranges rooms and airport pick-up.

Dining
ZZU does not publish canteen menus or meal prices on the pages used here. The Fees page estimates meals at RMB 1,000–1,500 a month, and the 2026 foundation page gives CNY 600–1,000 a month for living costs.
Facilities
Health & insurance
Insurance is compulsory (RMB 1,000 a year), and students without it are not registered. The physical examination costs RMB 600. ZZU has 13 affiliated hospitals.
Visa & residence permit
The residence permit costs RMB 430 each time. The June 2026 notice sets separate entry rules for students arriving from abroad, transferring from another Chinese school, or continuing after a ZZU degree.
HSK test centre
The School of International Education runs internet-based HSK Levels 2–6 and HSKK tests in Building 17, Liuyuan, with registration at chinesetest.cn (contact hsk@zzu.edu.cn, +86-371-67739073).

Frequently asked questions
How much is tuition at Zhengzhou University for international students?+
Tuition depends on your subject category and teaching language. Bachelor’s degrees cost RMB 18,000, 20,000 or 30,000 a year in Chinese (categories 1–3) and RMB 23,000, 25,000 or 35,000 in English. Master’s degrees cost RMB 25,000–34,000 in Chinese and 30,000–39,000 in English; doctorates cost RMB 30,000–45,000 in Chinese and 35,000–50,000 in English. Chinese language study is RMB 7,500 a semester, and the 2026 Science & Engineering Foundation year is CNY 15,000. Add the RMB 800 application fee (ZZU’s pages disagree on whether it is paid on submission or only once admitted) and insurance of RMB 1,000 a year.
Can I study at ZZU for RMB 5,000 a year?+
On some English-taught bachelor’s programs, yes, if you win a Henan Government Scholarship. Successful applicants to Pharmacy, International Trade & Economics and Software Engineering pay RMB 5,000 a year. In Civil Engineering and Tourism Management, the top 20 in each program pay nothing and the rest pay RMB 5,000. The scholarship page also describes a Type B grade that leaves RMB 10,000 a year to pay. The scholarship covers tuition only, so you still pay for your dormitory, insurance and living costs.
Do I need the CSCA test for a bachelor’s degree at ZZU?+
Yes. ZZU’s October 2025 notice says that from 2026/2027 every international undergraduate applicant must take the China Scholastic Competency Assessment before applying. Mathematics is compulsory, Professional Chinese is added for Chinese-taught programs, and Physics or Chemistry is required depending on the major. It costs RMB 450 for one subject or RMB 700 for two or more, with sittings in January, March, April, June and December; details are at csca.cn. Master’s and doctoral applicants do not take it. Foundation students must pass it to move on to the degree.
What are the language and age requirements?+
The limits differ by program: - English-taught bachelor’s: IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 82 (or citizenship of an English-speaking country) and age 18–24. The SIE’s clinical medicine page says 18–29 and TOEFL 83. - Chinese-taught bachelor’s: HSK 4 (180+) and age 18–30. - Master’s: HSK 5, or IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90, and under 40 (under 45 for English-taught medicine). - Doctoral: HSK 5 (above 210), or IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90, and under 45. The President Scholarship caps doctoral applicants at 40. - Henan Government Scholarship: age caps of 25, 35 and 45 for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral applicants. Because official pages differ, confirm the rule for your program with the office.
When are the 2026 application deadlines?+
The master’s and doctoral system opened on 16 October 2025. Scholarship deadlines are 28 February 2026 (Type B CSC and President round 1), 30 April (Type A CSC) and 31 May (President round 2 and Henan Government). English-taught bachelor’s applications run from January to June, and the Science & Engineering Foundation takes applications from 1 March to 30 June 2026. Registration is on 7–9 September 2026. Where do international students live, and what does it cost?+
In on-campus international dormitories costing RMB 5,000 or 10,000 a year (CNY 15 or 30 a day) on the official pages. Older SIE figures put Liuyuan Building 17 and the East Campus apartment at RMB 30 a day for a double and RMB 60 for a single. Students normally share doubles, and rooms have a bathroom, air-conditioning and internet. The clinical medicine page warns that rooms are limited and some students may have to live off campus.
