About Shanghai University of Finance and Economics
Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (上海财经大学, SUFE) traces its origins to 1917, when a business program was set up at the Nanjing Higher Normal School. In 1921 it moved to Shanghai as the Shanghai University of Commerce under National Southeast University — described by SUFE as “the first commercial university in China’s history of education”. It was renamed Shanghai College of Finance and Economics in 1950 and took its present name in 1985. The university is jointly developed by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, and is part of Project 211 and the national Double First-Class initiative.
SUFE describes itself as “a multi-disciplinary key university that focuses on finance and economics”, with coordinated development in economics, management, law, arts and science. Its three campuses cover about 136 acres (826 mu); the main campus is at No. 777 Guoding Road in Yangpu District, while international admissions are handled from the International Cultural Exchange School at 321 Wudong Road, also in Yangpu. The university offers 41 undergraduate majors, 10 first-level doctoral programs, 15 first-level master’s programs, 17 professional master’s degrees and 8 postdoctoral research stations, with 987 full-time faculty.
Official pages give different figures for the international student body, so read them in context. The international students site’s overview counts 18,299 students in total — 8,071 undergraduates, 7,151 master’s students, 1,401 doctoral students, 355 international students, 1,290 continuing-education students and 31 preparatory students. The English homepage instead shows “600+” international students, and the International Student Education page records 794 international students from 93 countries as of 2022. The figures appear to count different groups and years; none of the pages reconciles them. International students have studied at SUFE since 1957, when the first group arrived from Vietnam.

A specialist, not a comprehensive
Every international degree program sits in finance, economics, business, public administration, law, statistics or Chinese-language education. If you want engineering or medicine, this is the wrong university.

English-taught bachelor’s degrees in Finance and in International Economics and Trade, and English-taught master’s programs in international business, finance, international finance, public administration, regional economics and law, plus an English-taught MBA the university states is accredited by CAMEA, AMBA, AACSB and EQUIS.

Admission, programs & tuition
SUFE admits international students to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and to non-degree Chinese-language and preparatory programs; all applications go through the SUFE Applicant Portal at ao.sufe.edu.cn and are handled by the International Cultural Exchange School (ICES). Two features stand out for the 2026 intake. First, every undergraduate applicant must sit the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA): the Mathematics test is compulsory for all majors, and applicants add either the Chinese (humanities) or the English test depending on the program. Second, the undergraduate calendar is split into three rounds by funding type — Shanghai Government Scholarship applicants apply 1 January – 31 March 2026, SUFE Scholarship and International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship applicants 1–30 April 2026, and self-funded applicants 1–31 May 2026 — although the English-taught Finance and International Economics and Trade pages give a later window of 10 May – 25 June 2026, and the new Sinology and China Studies page 10–25 June 2026. Master’s and doctoral applications run from 16 November 2025 to 15 June 2026. At every level the stated age range is 18 to 45 inclusive, which is unusually wide; scholarships then impose their own, tighter age limits. Shortlisted applicants at every level are interviewed, and offers must be accepted by 30 June 2026.

Application requirements
- Non-Chinese citizen aged 18–45, in good health, who has completed senior high school or will receive the diploma by summer 2026.
- China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) is mandatory: Mathematics for every major, plus the Chinese (humanities) test for Chinese-taught majors other than Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, for which the applicant chooses the Chinese or the English test. The English-taught pages list the CSCA Mathematics test.
- Chinese-taught majors: HSK 5 at the time of application; Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages requires HSK 4, and the Sinology and China Studies page asks for HSK 4 with at least 180. HSK results are valid for two years from the test date.

Master’s degreeGraduate
Sixteen two-year programs across eight schools for 2026. English-taught: Master of International Business, MBA, Finance, International Finance, Master of Public Administration, Regional Economics and Master of Laws (LL.M.). Chinese-taught: Master of International Business, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, International Chinese Language Education, Master of Finance, Master of Valuation, Master of Taxation, Social Welfare, Master of Applied Statistics and Master of Digital Economics. SUFE’s major list quotes tuition per semester, so the annual cost is twice the listed figure — the English-taught MIB page confirms this as “CNY 35,000 per semester, CNY 70,000 per academic year”.

- English-taught programs: native English speaker, or IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80 or Duolingo English Test 110; the checklist also accepts English-taught undergraduate study. Test results are valid for two years.
- Personal statement of 800–1,000 words in the language of the intended program, and two recent, dated recommendation letters from professors or associate professors.
- Police clearance certificate and (for scholarship applicants) a Foreigner’s Physical Examination Report, each dated within 6 months; financial guarantee form signed by the sponsor.

Doctoral degreeGraduate
A short list for international applicants: a Chinese-taught PhD in Finance, a Chinese-taught PhD in Accounting and an English-taught PhD in Economic Law (School of Law). The 2026 general requirements page does not print tuition, and the program pages for Finance and Economic Law were published in October 2024 for the September 2025 intake, so confirm the 2026 fees with ICES before you apply.

Non-degree programs
Undergraduate Preparatory Program (预科)
A Chinese-and-mathematics year for students aiming at an economics, business or liberal-arts bachelor’s degree at SUFE or another Chinese university, or at HSK 4–5. Classes run Monday to Friday, 8:00–17:00, at 30–34 class hours a week (45 minutes each), with business-Chinese and liberal-arts-Chinese tracks. The foundation level needs no prior Chinese; the intermediate level requires HSK 3 or 300+ hours of study. Students who obtain HSK 5, qualifying CSCA scores and pass the preparatory exit exam may enter a SUFE bachelor’s program directly. Applicants must be at least 18. Applications run 23 March – 30 June 2026, with registration on 29 August 2026.

Chinese PLUS Program (General Chinese and Business Chinese tracks)
SUFE’s Chinese-language program for non-degree students, in a General (Practical) Chinese track and a Business Chinese track. The 2026 spring intake closed on 31 December 2025, and ICES posted pages for the spring 2027 intake on 24 September 2026. The program pages do not print fees, term dates, weekly hours or the application deadline in their text, so request the current brochure from ices@sufe.edu.cn before applying.

Exchange students
For students nominated by one of SUFE’s partner universities. Exchange students are handled not by ICES but by the International Exchange and Cooperation Office (IECO), which publishes an annual factsheet (2026–2027 and 2027–2028 editions), a student application guide and lists of English-taught undergraduate and graduate courses per semester. Start with your home university’s international office; SUFE’s own pages do not restate nomination deadlines or housing prices.

- Passport information page — the passport must be valid beyond 31 January 2027 (both the undergraduate and master’s checklists); applicants already in mainland China add their Chinese visa or residence permit.

SUFE’s fee structure has one trap: the master’s major list quotes tuition per semester, not per year. Undergraduate tuition is a flat RMB 30,000 per year (RMB 15,000 per semester) whether the major is taught in Chinese or English. Master’s tuition ranges from RMB 34,000 a year for Linguistics and Social Welfare to RMB 144,000 a year for the English-taught MBA, with most English-taught programs at RMB 70,000. Doctoral fees are set per program; the Finance (RMB 40,000 / year) and Economic Law (RMB 50,000 / year) figures come from pages written for the 2025 intake, and the Accounting page prints “CNY700,000/4year”, so confirm the 2026 figure. The application fee is RMB 830 for Chinese-taught and undergraduate programs and RMB 1,660 for English-taught graduate programs, paid by bank transfer only and non-refundable. Budget separately for accommodation (RMB 30–100 a day depending on dormitory and room) and insurance; the admission pages do not state the insurance premium, so ask ICES.

Funding
Scholarships
SUFE runs a scholarship system that is tied closely to its admission calendar: at undergraduate level, the round you apply in decides which scholarship you are considered for, so decide on funding before you decide when to apply. You indicate the scholarship in the “Financial Support” section of the application form. The Shanghai Government Scholarship is only open in round 1 (1 January – 31 March 2026), the SUFE Undergraduate Freshman and International Chinese Language Teachers scholarships in round 2 (April 2026), and round 3 is for self-funded students. Graduate applicants can apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship University Program (Type B), the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship for the Master of International Chinese Education, and — for citizens of Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand — a Belt & Road program. Scholarship age limits are much tighter than admission age limits: 25 for undergraduate awards, generally 35 for master’s and 40 for doctoral CSC awards.
Chinese Government Scholarship — University Program (Type B)
Full tuition waiver, on-campus accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance and a monthly stipend of RMB 3,000 (master’s) or RMB 3,500 (doctoral), for 2 academic years (master’s) or 3–4 academic years (doctoral).
Eligibility: Master’s and doctoral applicants with an excellent academic record, generally under 35 (master’s) or under 40 (doctoral), meeting the program language requirement. Apply to the SUFE program between 16 November 2025 and 28 February 2026, then file the CSC scholarship application in late March 2026 after receiving a conditional offer; results late June or July 2026.
Chinese Government Scholarship — Belt & Road Program (Lancang-Mekong Financial and Economic Strategic Talents Leadership Program)
Full tuition waiver, free housing or an accommodation subsidy, comprehensive medical insurance and a monthly stipend of RMB 2,500 (undergraduate) or RMB 3,000 (master’s).
Eligibility: Citizens of Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand only. Undergraduate: Chinese-taught Finance or International Economics and Trade, under 25. Master’s: Chinese-taught Finance, International Business (Chinese or English) or English-taught Public Administration, under 35. Shanghai Government Scholarship (undergraduate)
Type A: 100% tuition, on-campus accommodation, medical insurance and a living stipend of RMB 2,500 per month. Type B: 100% tuition and medical insurance. Both for 4 years.
Eligibility: Undergraduate applicants aged 18–25 with HSK 5 (180) who complete high school by summer 2026. CSCA must be taken, and the online application submitted, between 1 January and 31 March 2026; interviews mid-April, decisions late May or early June 2026.
SUFE Undergraduate Freshman Scholarship
A stipend of RMB 5,000 per semester for the four-year program. It does not cover tuition or accommodation.
Eligibility: Undergraduate applicants aged 18–25 with HSK 5 above 180, any major, applying 1–30 April 2026 with CSCA taken by 30 April. Awarded on merit — academics, test scores, extracurricular activities and community service — “not on your need for financial aid”; results by 15 July 2026.
International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
Bachelor’s: 100% tuition, medical insurance, on-campus accommodation and a living stipend of RMB 2,500 per month. Master’s: tuition, medical insurance, on-campus accommodation and a living stipend (amount not stated on SUFE’s page).
Eligibility: Bachelor in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages: aged 16–25 on 1 September 2026 with HSK 4 (210) and HSKK intermediate (60); program application 1–30 April 2026. SUFE’s value on the job market rests on its reputation in finance, accounting and economics in Shanghai, China’s financial centre. SUFE does not, however, publish employment or salary statistics for international graduates on its international-student or English pages, and neither site describes a career service specifically for international students. Campus life
International students live in one of two dormitories rather than on the Guoding Road main campus, and the choice matters for your budget. The Zhongshan Beiyi Road Dormitory at 66 Guangxiu Road is a five-minute walk from Chifeng Road station on Metro Line 3, with triple and double rooms priced by length of stay; the Sanmen Road Dormitory in Baoshan District is a ten-minute walk from the main campus, with double and single rooms. All rooms have air conditioning and a private bathroom with shower. SUFE also posts an off-campus option, i-Home, but does not publish its prices on the page. Student life for international students centres on the International Culture Festival (held for the 21st time in 2025), cultural clubs, social-practice visits and the International Students Society (ISS).

How much is tuition at SUFE for international students?+
Bachelor’s tuition is RMB 30,000 per year for every major, Chinese- or English-taught. Native English speakers are exempt from the English tests, and results must be less than two years old.
When are the application deadlines for 2026?+
Master’s and doctoral: 16 November 2025 to 15 June 2026, though Chinese Government Scholarship (Type B) applicants must apply by 28 February 2026. Bachelor’s: three rounds — 1 January to 31 March 2026 for the Shanghai Government Scholarship, 1–30 April for SUFE and Chinese Language Teachers scholarships, and 1–31 May for self-funded applicants; the English-taught Finance and International Economics and Trade pages give 10 May – 25 June 2026. Offers must be accepted by 30 June 2026.
Is there an age limit?+
For admission, SUFE accepts applicants aged 18 to 45 at every level. Scholarships are stricter: 18–25 for the Shanghai Government and SUFE Freshman scholarships, 16–25 for the undergraduate Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, and generally under 35 (master’s) or under 40 (doctoral) for the Chinese Government Scholarship.
What scholarships can I apply for?+
Undergraduates: the Shanghai Government Scholarship (Type A covers tuition, dormitory, insurance and RMB 2,500 a month; Type B tuition and insurance), the SUFE Freshman Scholarship (RMB 5,000 a semester) and, for TCSOL, the Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. Graduates: the Chinese Government Scholarship Type B (tuition, dormitory, insurance and RMB 3,000 or 3,500 a month) and the Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship for International Chinese Education. Students from Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand can also apply for the Lancang-Mekong Belt & Road program.
Where do international students live and what does it cost?+
In the Zhongshan Beiyi Road Dormitory (RMB 30–40 per person per day for long stays in triple or double rooms) or the Sanmen Road Dormitory near the main campus (RMB 60 for a double, RMB 80–100 for a single, plus an RMB 800 deposit). Utilities and laundry are extra in both.
