About Nanjing Forestry University
Nanjing Forestry University (南京林业大学, NJFU) dates its origins to 1902, when preparation began for a normal school in Jiangning (Nanjing) — the institution that became Nanjing Higher Normal School and later National Central University. Its Faculty of Forestry was established in 1941 under the forest scientist Liang Xi. In 1952 the forestry departments of Central University (by then Nanjing University) and the University of Nanking were merged to form Nanjing Forestry College; it moved to its present campus in 1955, was renamed Nanjing Technological College of Forest Products in 1972, took back the name Nanjing Forestry College in 1983 and became Nanjing Forestry University in 1985. The university’s English pages describe the same roots in two ways — the History page starts at the 1902 normal school, while the General Information page also names 1914 and Jinling University (the University of Nanking).
NJFU joined China’s Double First-Class initiative in 2017 with one designated discipline, Forestry Engineering. In the national discipline assessment Forestry Engineering and Forestry are rated A+ and Landscape Architecture A-, and the university’s Facts and Figures page lists six disciplines in the top 1% of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI): Materials Science, Environment/Ecology, Biology & Biochemistry, Geosciences, General Social Sciences and Computer Science. The main campus and the College of International Education are at No. 159 Longpan Road, Nanjing; the university states it has three campuses.
The current English General Information page gives 24 colleges, 77 undergraduate programs (31 of them national first-class programs), more than 40,000 full-time students and 2,030 full-time teachers, including 317 doctoral supervisors, 1,163 senior-ranked staff and one member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. An older Introduction to University page on the College of International Education site gives lower figures — 22 schools, over 30,000 students and more than 2,050 faculty — so use the General Information figures, which are the more recent, and treat the older ones as historical. Both pages agree that around 600 international students study at NJFU each year.

Admission, programs & tuition
NJFU admits international students to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and to a Chinese Language Studies Program. All degree applications go through the online system at njfu.17gz.org and are handled by the College of International Education, whose admission office is Room 207 of the International Education Building on Longpan Road. How well each level is documented for 2026 differs, and it is worth knowing before you plan. The master’s route has a full 2026 guide: apply by 31 May 2026, register in September 2026. For undergraduates, the 2026 notice on the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) requires applicants to English-taught bachelor’s programs to sit Mathematics and Chemistry in English and submit their scores by 31 May 2026; the standing undergraduate and doctoral application pages still carry 2023 dates, so the entry requirements below come from those pages and the fees from the current Fees & Payment page, and you should confirm the 2026 undergraduate and doctoral deadlines with the admission office. The university does not list its English-taught bachelor’s majors for 2026 on its English pages, and the CSCA notice sets no CSCA requirement for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs — ask the office about both. Age limits are set per level: 18–28 for undergraduates, generally under 35 for master’s and generally under 40 for doctoral applicants.

The 2026 CSCA notice confirms that English-taught undergraduate programs run for the 2026 intake, but the university does not list which majors are English-taught on its English pages, so ask the office before applying.

- English-taught programs: CSCA Mathematics and Chemistry, both taken in English, with scores submitted no later than 31 May 2026. The CSCA notice recommends sitting the test between December 2025 and April 2026 for autumn 2026 entry; the fee is RMB 450 for one subject or RMB 700 for two or more.
- Language: a good command of Chinese or English, with TOEFL 80, IELTS 6.0 or HSK 4 or above.
- Graduation requirement: HSK 5 for Chinese-taught programs and HSK 4 for English-taught programs — so English-track students still need to reach HSK 4 before they graduate.

Non-degree programs
Chinese Language Studies Program
General Chinese for applicants with a senior high-school diploma or above. The fall semester runs September to January and the spring semester February to June; most courses are 42 hours a semester, with Chinese Comprehension at 96 hours. Applications are accepted all year round and registration is in early September or February. The program page is an older one (dated 2016), and its RMB 300 application fee differs from the RMB 400 fee on the current Fees & Payment page — confirm which applies.

APFNet Scholarship master’s program
A scholarship master’s in sustainable forest management run with the Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation, in Forestry (College of Forestry and Grassland, College of Soil and Water Conservation) or Resources and Environment (College of Ecology and Environment). It is a degree program, listed here because it has its own application route and calendar: apply by 31 May 2026, results before 30 June 2026. See the scholarships section for eligibility.

Registration
Sep 2026Students must arrive in Nanjing no later than the registration day, and are advised not to arrive more than two weeks early.
NJFU’s degree tuition is a single flat rate per level rather than a band by subject: RMB 16,500 a year for a bachelor’s, RMB 27,000 for a master’s and RMB 31,000 for a PhD, with Chinese language study at RMB 6,500 a semester. The application fee is RMB 400 (USD 60 when paid from abroad) and is non-refundable. Budget separately for insurance at RMB 600 a year (or RMB 300 a semester), a residence permit at RMB 400 a year, a medical check-up at RMB 538, and a dormitory at RMB 360–540 a month. Water is free and electricity is charged at RMB 0.52 per kWh. The Fees & Payment page carries no year, so confirm the current figures before you pay.

The 2026 master’s guide lists five kinds of scholarship at NJFU: the Chinese Government Scholarship, the Jiangsu Government Scholarship, the Nanjing Government Scholarship, the NJFU Scholarship for Incoming Freshmen and the NJFU Academic Scholarship for International Students. NJFU also hosts the APFNet Scholarship for forestry master’s students from the Asia-Pacific. Not every scholarship page is current: the Nanjing Municipal Government and APFNet pages are 2026 editions, the High-level Postgraduate guide is the 2025 edition, the Freshmen scholarship page is the 2024 edition, and the Jiangsu and Academic scholarship pages are older still. The coverage below is what those pages state; confirm the 2026 terms with the admission office. The 31 May 2026 deadline applies to the Nanjing and APFNet awards.
Chinese Government Scholarship — High-level Postgraduate Program (Type B, school code 10298)
Per the 2025 NJFU application guide: tuition waiver, free on-campus housing (or a CNY 700–1,000 monthly subsidy for off-campus housing), a monthly stipend of CNY 3,000 for master’s or CNY 3,500 for PhD students, and medical insurance of CNY 800 a year.
Eligibility: Master’s applicants with a bachelor’s degree, under 35; PhD applicants with a master’s degree, under 40; excellent academic performance. Chinese-taught programs need HSK 4 with no sub-score below 60; English-taught programs need IELTS 6.0 with no sub-score below 6, TOEFL 80, or proof of a previous English-taught degree (native speakers exempt). A study plan of 1,000+ characters (master’s) or 1,200+ (PhD), two recommendation letters and a supervisor acceptance letter are required. For 2026/2027, shortlisted applicants were interviewed online on 9–15 March 2026 and ten were admitted on 6 May 2026.
Chinese Government Scholarship — Silk Road Program
NJFU does not publish the coverage of this program on its English pages; ask the admission office.
Eligibility: NJFU takes part in the Silk Road Program: the 2026/2027 pre-admission list was published on 2 June 2026 and the admission list on 6 July 2026. The university does not publish eligibility rules for it on its English pages.
Jasmine Jiangsu Government Scholarship
Full scholarship: RMB 50,000 a year for a bachelor’s, RMB 70,000 for a master’s and RMB 90,000 for a PhD, covering tuition, a RMB 10,000 annual housing allowance, a RMB 1,500 monthly stipend and medical insurance. Partial scholarship: RMB 30,000 per academic year. These figures come from an older NJFU page (dated 2016) — confirm the current amounts.
Eligibility: Non-Chinese citizens in good health, not holding another Chinese government scholarship: bachelor’s applicants under 30 with a high-school diploma, master’s applicants under 35 with a bachelor’s degree, doctoral applicants under 40 with a master’s degree; an HSK or English certificate is required. The page gives an application window of 1 January to 30 April each year.
Nanjing Municipal Government Scholarship (2026)
RMB 10,000 a year for bachelor’s students and RMB 20,000 a year for master’s students. The page lists age limits for doctoral applicants but sets no doctoral amount.
Eligibility: Non-Chinese citizens in good health with a good academic record who do not hold another Chinese government scholarship: undergraduates under 30 with a high-school diploma, master’s applicants under 35 with a bachelor’s degree, doctoral applicants under 40 with a master’s degree. HSK 4 or IELTS 6.0, two recommendation letters and a study plan of 800+ words (undergraduate), 1,000+ (master’s) or 2,000+ (doctoral). Deadline 31 May 2026.
APFNet Scholarship (2026)
Tuition waiver, free on-campus dormitory, a monthly stipend, comprehensive medical insurance including outpatient services, and one round-trip international economy-class flight from the home economy.
Eligibility: Citizens of Bangladesh, Cambodia, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand or Vietnam, aged 18–40, with a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and IELTS 6.0 (no sub-score below 6) or TOEFL 79. Two or more years of work experience and female applicants are preferred. For the two-year master’s in Forestry or Resources and Environment starting September 2026; deadline 31 May 2026, results before 30 June 2026.
NJFU Scholarship for Incoming Freshmen
Per the 2024 edition: undergraduates receive a tuition waiver and CNY 600 a year of medical insurance; master’s students a tuition waiver, free dormitory, a CNY 1,000 monthly stipend for 10 months and insurance; PhD students the same with a CNY 1,500 stipend. The award lasts no more than one academic year and may be renewed on performance.
Eligibility: New students in good health with a good academic record: undergraduates aged 18–28 with a high-school diploma, master’s applicants under 35, doctoral applicants under 40. The 2024 edition’s deadline was 31 May; NJFU has not posted a 2026 edition on its English pages, so ask the office whether the same date applies.
NJFU Academic Scholarship for International Students
First class: tuition and accommodation waived plus RMB 500 (undergraduate), 1,000 (master’s) or 1,500 (doctoral) a month for 10 months. Second class: tuition waived. Third class: a RMB 5,000 bonus.
Eligibility: For continuing students after more than a year of study, with excellent results and HSK Band 4 (or an intermediate oral test) or above. Awards go to no more than 70% of eligible students — 15% first class, 25% second class and 30% third class. Exam failures, rule violations, false documents or late fees disqualify you. The current page shows the 2020 round, with a mid-September deadline.

NJFU’s research follows its forestry specialism: forest genetics and tree breeding, the utilisation of biomass, wood science and engineered wood, bamboo, and ecology and the environment. The General Information page lists six national innovation platforms in these areas and 2,274 authorised invention patents, and the university has seven post-doctoral mobile stations. The master’s list shows two research units that take international graduate students directly, the National Engineering Research Center (structural engineering) and the Bamboo Research Institute (silviculture). An older Introduction to University page gives a different picture — one national engineering centre, 49 provincial-level research institutions and labs and 66 university research centres — and those figures are likely out of date.

The College of International Education, set up in October 2004, runs both international student recruitment and the university’s Chinese-foreign cooperative education programs, and works with the China Scholarship Council and the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education on study-abroad and exchange. The clearest international commitment for students is the APFNet partnership, which brings forestry professionals from the Asia-Pacific to Nanjing on fully funded master’s scholarships. An older NJFU page counts partner universities in 30 countries; the General Information figure is the more recent.
APFNet Scholarship Program
A master’s scholarship with the Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation for citizens of 15 Asia-Pacific economies, in Forestry and in Resources and Environment. The APFNet section of the admissions site also lists a Materials and Chemical Engineering track.
China Scholarship Council programs
NJFU admits students through the CSC High-level Postgraduate Program and the Silk Road Program; for 2026/2027 the High-level Postgraduate list included students from Indonesia, Vietnam, Pakistan, Morocco and Bangladesh.

Career & alumni
NJFU does not publish employment or salary figures for its international graduates on its English pages, and it does not describe a career service for international students there. The university’s strengths — forestry, wood and materials, furniture design, landscape architecture and environmental engineering — point towards forestry agencies, the timber, furniture and paper industries, design practice and research. The APFNet program, which prefers applicants with work experience, is aimed at forestry professionals who will return to their home forestry sectors. The College of International Education site has an Alumni section; ask the office about alumni networks and internship support.

Campus life
International students live on the main Longpan Road campus in two dedicated buildings, split by level. Undergraduates live in the Nandashan International Student Dormitory in the south-east of the campus, about five minutes’ walk from the East Gate (东门): three seven-storey blocks with 34 apartments and 102 rooms. Graduate students live in the International Student Dormitory in the north-west, about five minutes from North Gate 1 (北一门): three six-storey blocks with 36 apartments. Every apartment has its own kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave and induction cooker, so cooking for yourself is realistic. Bedding and kitchenware are not provided. Arrive in Nanjing no later than registration day, and no more than two weeks before it.

Yes: the Chinese Government Scholarship (High-level Postgraduate and Silk Road programs), the Jasmine Jiangsu Government Scholarship, the Nanjing Municipal Government Scholarship (RMB 10,000 a year for bachelor’s, RMB 20,000 for master’s students in 2026), the NJFU Scholarship for Incoming Freshmen, the NJFU Academic Scholarship for continuing students, and the APFNet Scholarship for Asia-Pacific forestry master’s students. Where do international students live, and what does it cost?+
On the Longpan Road campus. Undergraduates share double rooms in the Nandashan International Student Dormitory for RMB 360 a month; graduate students have single bedrooms in the International Student Dormitory for RMB 450 or 540 a month. Apartments have kitchens, air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi; water is free and electricity is RMB 0.52 per kWh.
