Huazhong University of Science and Technology — guide for international students

Huazhong University of Science and Technology (华中科技大学) is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education. Its engineering core dates from November 1952, when the decision was taken to found the Huazhong Institute of Technology in Wuhan; it was renamed 华中理工大学 in January 1988. The present university was formed on 26 May 2000 by merging that university with Tongji Medical University — whose roots go back to a German medical school founded in Shanghai in 1907 — and Wuhan Urban Construction Institute. HUST is one of the universities in Project 211 and Project 985 and was in the first group of Double First-Class universities; nine of its disciplines are in the second round of the Double First-Class list.

HUST covers 11 disciplinary categories — philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, medicine, management, art and interdisciplinary studies. The Chinese-language school introduction (data as of December 2025) counts 119 undergraduate majors, 49 first-level disciplines authorised to award master’s degrees and 49 authorised to award doctorates, 3,700+ full-time teachers (1,500+ professors), 20 academicians and a campus of more than 7,000 mu with 72% green cover — hence the nickname “university in the forest”. Its affiliated hospitals include Union Hospital and Tongji Hospital.

Official size figures disagree, so treat any single number with care. The English About page gives 50,000+ students (about 30,000 undergraduates, 15,000 master’s and 6,000 PhD students), 6,611 faculty and staff and “more than 2000 international students from around 120 countries”, about 1,500 on degree programs; the Facts & Figures page lists 29,519 undergraduates, 32,640 graduate students, three campuses, 19 academicians and 1,476 international students; the QS profile shows 2,358. For international students the geography is simpler: exchange and degree students are based at the Main Campus on Luoyu Road, medical students are served by a separate office at Tongji Medical College, and the 2026 guides place Chinese-language students on the Junshan Campus.

HUST admits international students to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and to non-degree foundation, Chinese-language, exchange, research-internship and summer programs. Every application goes through admission.hust.edu.cn, with an application fee of 600 CNY or 100 USD. The 2026 system opened on 15 October 2025, but the closing dates are far apart, and this is the thing to get right: graduate applications — self-funded and Chinese University Program scholarship alike — closed on 1 March 2026, while undergraduate applications ran until 15 June 2026. Undergraduates must submit a China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) report; the guide maps CSCA subjects to disciplines in a table and refers applicants to www.csca.cn for test dates. Only some schools interview undergraduates, and graduate applicants take an online language test after submitting. The graduate guide sets age limits (under 35 for master’s, under 40 for doctoral) and a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0, 3.75/5.0 or 75%; the undergraduate guide states no upper age limit. Applicants whose parents are Chinese citizens who settled abroad must have obtained foreign citizenship before 30 April 2022 and lived outside China for at least two years between 1 May 2022 and 30 April 2026. HUST had not published a 2027 guide when this page was checked, so all dates are for the 2026 cycle.

These are the dates Huazhong University of Science and Technology published for the 2026 intake. That cycle has closed. Use them as a guide to when each step falls in the year, and check the official pages for the 2027 dates before you plan around them.

Almost all scholarship funding at HUST is Chinese Government Scholarship, and the channel depends on your level. Type B channels are applied for through HUST (agency no. 10487): the Chinese University Program, for postgraduates only, and the Silk Road Program, which in 2026 funded two Chinese-taught bachelor’s programs. Type A channels — Bilateral, EU Window, MOFCOM and Youth of Excellence — go through a dispatching authority or another CSC agency number. Graduate candidates apply in the HUST system by 1 March 2026, then complete the CSC application at studyinchina.csc.edu.cn once pre-admitted. The scholarship FAQ says students “with GPA over 3.0/4 or 3.75/5 or 70/100 are eligible”, but the graduate guide’s minimum is 75% — work to 75%. For self-funded undergraduates, the 2024 guide described a one-time HUST President Scholarship of RMB 2,000–5,000; the 2026 undergraduate guide mentions no scholarship, so ask whether it still runs. HUST’s MOFCOM page (master’s and PhD, stipend RMB 3,000 / 3,500) still shows a 2016 deadline, so check current terms with the embassy. The HUST scholarship pages reviewed list no Hubei Provincial Government scholarship.

HUST’s research is strongest in optoelectronics, manufacturing, energy and medicine. The English site stresses that HUST is “the only university in China that manages four National Laboratory / National Science Centers”, and names them: the Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, the Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center, the precise gravity measurement centre and the National Innovation Institute of Digital Design and Manufacturing, approved in 2018 as a joint venture with Tsinghua University. Its optoelectronics work helped create “Optics Valley”, the high-tech zone beside the campus. Platform counts differ: the English Research Excellence page lists 4 state key laboratories, the newer Chinese introduction (December 2025) 7 national key laboratories and 2 national technology innovation centres.

HUST’s Chinese introduction counts more than 300 partner universities and institutions in 41 countries and regions; the ISO’s older “Why HUST” page gives 290+ in 30+ countries, plus three Confucius Institutes abroad. The ISO’s Global Partners page lists about 80 partners, mostly in Europe (28) and Asia (24, 18 in Japan), including Kyoto University, the University of Tokyo, the University of Pennsylvania, Georgia Tech and the University of Liverpool; one of the earliest agreements is with Kanazawa Medical University (1985).

HUST’s International Student Office runs a Career Services page of recruitment notices — when checked it listed 29 postings, including BYD’s spring 2026 campus recruitment, Accelink Technologies, DYMIND International (marketing trainees; international students welcome), GCL Technology, Goertek and Envision Energy. The ISO publishes no employment or salary statistics for international graduates and no guidance on work rules — check with the ISO before taking a job. The university says its graduates, including more than 10,000 international alumni, work worldwide as engineers, medical experts and government officials.

International students at HUST live in four apartment complexes — Bojingge, Friendship, Hong Jing and the Tongji Campus apartments — and the International Student Office assigns rooms according to its overall arrangements. There are single rooms, double rooms and suites of different sizes, all with hot water and air-conditioning. Official prices vary by page (see below), and utilities are billed separately.

The campus has many canteens on its east and west sides — Yunyuan, Xueyi, Xueer, East 3, East 4, East Garden, Dongli, West 1, West 2, Baijing, Xiyuan and Baihui Garden — including three Muslim (halal) canteens, plus bakeries, cafés and small food stalls. HUST publishes no meal prices; the graduate guide estimates living expenses at RMB 1,200–2,500 a month.
