About Hangzhou Dianzi University
Hangzhou Dianzi University (杭州电子科技大学), usually shortened to HDU, was established in 1956 as the Hangzhou Aviation Industry Finance School under the Second Ministry of Machinery Industry. Its name changed repeatedly over the next fifty years — Hangzhou Aviation Industry School, Zhejiang Electric Machinery Technical School, Zhejiang Machinery Industry School, Hangzhou Radio Industry Management School in 1965, and, from 1970 to 1973, the Xuejun Machine Factory — before it was restored as the Hangzhou Radio Industry School in 1973 and upgraded to the Hangzhou Institute of Electronic Engineering (杭州电子工业学院) in 1980. It took its present name in 2004.
HDU is a provincial rather than a national-flagship university, and it is worth being clear about that before you compare it with the names you already know: it is not a Project 985, Project 211 or Double First-Class institution. What it does hold is provincial status — Zhejiang listed it as a key university for construction in 2015 and as a provincial high-level university in 2023 — and a sharply defined subject profile. Seven disciplines sit in the global ESI top 1%, and the Facts and Figures page puts electronic science and technology 12th in China, control science and engineering 17th and computer science and technology 24th.
The university runs five campuses — Xiasha, Wenyi, Dongyue, Xiasha East and Qingshanhu — with Xiasha, in the Hangzhou Higher Education Park in Qiantang District, as the main site and the one international students study on. Two official counts of the land differ: the Chinese profile gives over 2,500 mu (roughly 167 hectares), the English Facts and Figures page 240 hectares. The older English Campus Guide page still describes only three campuses; five is the current figure.
Facts and Figures, updated January 2025, counts 28,000-plus registered students (19,855 undergraduates and 8,327 master’s and doctoral students), 961 international students, 19 schools and 2,708 faculty and staff, of whom 2,059 teach. The Chinese profile adds 10 first-level doctoral programs plus one professional doctorate category, 20 first-level master’s programs and six postdoctoral research stations. Program counts are one place where HDU’s own pages disagree: the Chinese profile says 41 undergraduate majors, Facts and Figures says 47 and the undated English Academics page says 60 — use the Facts and Figures number and confirm anything that matters with the school.

Facts and Figures also gives control science and engineering 17th and computer science and technology 24th in China.
Listed as a key university for construction in Zhejiang Province in 2015 and as a provincial high-level university in 2023. HDU does not publish a QS or THE world ranking on its own pages.
An electronics and IT university, first and foremost
More than 80% of HDU’s undergraduate programs are in engineering or IT, and the international major lists reflect it — electronics, communications, computing, software, automation and materials dominate at every level.
Strong in Zhejiang, not a national flagship
HDU is a provincial key and high-level university, not a 985, 211 or Double First-Class institution. The president’s message places it among the top five universities in Zhejiang Province.
Seven ESI top-1% disciplines
Engineering, computer science, materials science, chemistry, environment and ecology, social sciences and physics are all in the global ESI top 1%, with engineering the strongest of them.
A second subject cluster in economics and management
Alongside the engineering core, HDU runs schools of economics, management and accounting; the international lists carry digital economy, business management, applied economics and logistics, priced in the cheaper tuition band.
Admission
Admission, programs & tuition
Hangzhou Dianzi University admits international students to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and to a non-degree Chinese language program. Everything runs through one online system at lxsgl.hdu.edu.cn, and the 2026 guide is explicit that no paper application materials are required. Two features are worth knowing before you plan around them. First, the age limits are set per level and they are tight: 18–25 for undergraduate entry, under 32 for master’s, under 35 for doctoral, and 17–25 for the Chinese language program. Second, tuition is banded by discipline, not by language of instruction — a science or engineering major costs more than a management, economics or humanities one whether it is taught in English or in Chinese. The guide sets one deadline for everyone, 15 June, and the English version qualifies it as "June 15th/When seats are full", so applying early is worth more here than at universities running rolling batches. This profile describes the 2026 cycle: the newest documents HDU has published are the 2026 Application Guideline (17 March 2026) and the Chinese 2026 招生简章 (23 March 2026), and no 2027 guide has appeared yet. One route does not appear in the guide at all — a master-to-doctoral (硕博连读) program for students already on a full-time master’s at HDU, whose 2026 applications closed on 22 January 2026.

Doctoral tuition is a single flat rate, so the discipline band that splits bachelor’s and master’s fees does not apply.

Non-degree programs
Chinese Language Program (汉语言进修生)
HDU’s only non-degree route in the 2026 guide. Applicants must be 17–25 and hold a senior high-school diploma with transcripts; anyone under 18 must also submit a guardianship document, and no HSK score is required to enter. Two points on price: the RMB 600 registration fee appears on this row of the fee table only, and the tuition has moved sharply — the 2025 guide priced the program at RMB 8,000 a year against RMB 14,000 in 2026, so do not budget from an older version of the document.

- Notarized graduation and degree certificates for your highest level of study, plus full transcripts, all with a formal English or Chinese translation — high-school diploma for undergraduate and language-program applicants, bachelor’s for master’s applicants, master’s for doctoral applicants.
- Language evidence — HSK 4 (score 180+) for Chinese-taught undergraduate study, HSK 5 (score 180+) for Chinese-taught graduate study, or an IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo or EF SET score for English-taught programs. The guide names those four English tests without printing a pass mark for any of them.
- Two recommendation letters from associate professors or professors, and a study plan of at least 1,000 words — master’s and doctoral applicants only.

- Certificate of no criminal record issued by the police authority in your home country, valid for 3 months.

HDU bands tuition by discipline, not by teaching language: RMB 18,000 a year for management, economics and humanities bachelor’s majors and RMB 20,000 for science and engineering ones; RMB 25,000 and RMB 28,000 for the same split at master’s level; and a flat RMB 30,000 for every doctoral program. The 2026 fee table lists no application fee at all, which is unusual and worth confirming when you apply. Budget separately for a dormitory double room at RMB 5,400 a year, insurance at RMB 800, the foreigner physical examination at RMB 460 and RMB 400 per residence-permit application, plus bedding and your own water and electricity — all marked in the guide as paid by the student. The RMB 600 registration fee applies to the Chinese language program row only. Always confirm the current figure on the official guide before applying.

Scholarships
Funding is the thinnest part of HDU’s published record, and it is better to know that now than after you apply. The 2026 admission guide names exactly one award — the HDU Outstanding New International Students Scholarship, branded "SONIS" — and gives its terms in two lines. The English site carries a scholarship menu with headings for a Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship and an HDU Scholarship, but the pages behind them are empty of terms, and the university’s scholarship management measures are posted under Policies and Regulations as documents whose text does not render. One older page, dated 2018, does still carry figures, and they do not match the 2026 guide — both are set out below. The Chinese Government Scholarship is not named anywhere on HDU’s international pages, so do not assume you can apply for a CSC place through the university; ask the School of International Education before building a plan around it.
HDU Outstanding New International Students Scholarship ("SONIS")
Two classes, both covering the first academic year only. First Class equals the first academic year’s tuition fee and accommodation fee; Second Class equals the first year’s tuition fee. Because it is pegged to your own fees, its value follows your discipline band — from RMB 18,000 for a management bachelor’s to RMB 30,000 for a doctorate, plus RMB 5,400 of accommodation on First Class.
Eligibility: New degree-seeking international students in their first academic year; the 2026 guide marks it 仅限第一学年 and describes no renewal. The 2025 guide added that First Class applicants must submit a study plan of at least 1,000 words. No separate deadline is published, so submit any scholarship material with your application by 15 June.
HDU University Scholarship for International Students (2018 page)
An older page still published in the site’s scholarship section sets graded annual awards: for graduate programs RMB 30,000 (first prize), RMB 20,000 (second) or RMB 15,000 (third); for undergraduate programs RMB 20,000, RMB 15,000 or RMB 10,000. It gives application dates of 30 June for current students and 10 September for prospective ones.
Eligibility: Bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students, newly admitted or already enrolled, applying with a form, notarized diploma and transcripts, passport copy, HSK or Chinese test results and the physical examination form. Treat these figures as historical: the page is dated 2018 and both its amounts and its dates conflict with the 2026 guide, which names only SONIS. Ask the School of International Education which scheme is actually running for your intake.
Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship
Not published. The English scholarship menu carries a heading for this award, but the page behind it sets out no coverage, no amounts and no deadline, and the 2026 admission guide does not mention it.
Eligibility: Not published on HDU’s pages. Provincial scholarships in Zhejiang are administered through the host university, so ask the School of International Education whether HDU is nominating international students for it in your intake and what the cut-off is — as the site stands, it is not something you can apply for directly.
University scholarship regulations for continuing students
Not published as text. HDU lists standing scholarship rules under Policies and Regulations — 来华留学生奖学金管理办法 in a 2022 revision and a 2024 edition, an Outstanding New International Student Scholarship implementation detail and a comprehensive performance scoring rule — but the documents appear as titles only, so no amounts can be quoted from them.
Eligibility: Enrolled international students, assessed under the comprehensive performance scoring rules. Ask the school for current copies once you are enrolled; they are the basis on which continuing-student awards are decided.

Research at the university
HDU describes itself as one of the leading research-teaching universities in Zhejiang, and its research is concentrated where its teaching is: electronic science and technology, integrated circuits, control and automation, computing and software, cyber security, materials and biomedical engineering. Facts and Figures counts 4 key ministerial and provincial laboratories, 54 provincial and ministerial research platforms, 64 international science and technology research platforms and 502 national research projects, and records three second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, two second prizes of the National Invention Award and one second prize of the National Natural Science Award. One figure to be careful with: the same page gives annual research funds of more than RMB 70 million, while the English Research Overview page states over RMB 200 million a year. HDU does not say which supersedes the other, so quote the page you link to.
Electronics, integrated circuits & communications
The strongest cluster and the one behind HDU’s national standing — electronic science and technology is ranked 12th in China, and integrated circuit science and engineering carries both master’s and doctoral programs open to international students.
Computing, software & cyber security
Computer science and technology is ranked 24th nationally and sits in the ESI top 1%; the School of Cyberspace Security runs cyber science and technology at master’s and doctoral level in English or Chinese.
Control, automation & artificial intelligence
Control science and engineering is ranked 17th in China. The School of Automation, which doubles as the School of Artificial Intelligence, carries the AI undergraduate and master’s majors and the intelligent science and technology doctorate.
Materials, environment & biomedical engineering
Materials science, chemistry and environment and ecology are all ESI top-1% disciplines; the Research Achievements page records a 2015 result in which HDU researchers built hepatic lobules with an independently developed 3D bio-printer.

HDU’s president’s message states that the university has built collaborations with universities in over 40 countries and regions, and the Facts and Figures page quantifies the structures those collaborations run through: one international joint institute, four double-degree master’s programs approved by the Ministry of Education, 77 study-abroad programs, three Silk Road institutes and 64 international science and technology research platforms. The flagship is the joint institute with ITMO University in Russia, which appears in the university’s own list of schools rather than as a side project.

Outbound exchange and summer programs
The Office of International Exchange and Cooperation runs 77 study-abroad programs and an International Summer Camp, with pre-departure orientations for short-term and long-term participants. These are routes out of HDU for its own students, not entry routes for international applicants.

HDU’s employment record is a genuine strength and unusually well quantified — for its domestic cohort. Facts and Figures ranks HDU 68th in China for graduate starting salary and reports that 68% of bachelor’s graduates and 73.62% of master’s graduates go into IT industries; the president’s message counts more than 160,000 graduates since 1956, and the Chinese profile records HDU’s reputation as a 摇篮 or cradle of IT entrepreneurs in Zhejiang. Being in Hangzhou matters here: the university sits inside the Qiantang higher-education and economic development zone, in a city with a dense electronics, e-commerce and software industry. What HDU does not publish is any employment, placement or salary figure for its international graduates specifically, and the School of International Education runs no separate careers page — so treat any international-cohort employment number you see elsewhere as unsourced, and ask the school what support is available before you rely on it.

International students are based on the Xiasha campus in Qiantang District, the main site in the Hangzhou Higher Education Park, which the university describes as a modern campus holding 11 colleges and more than 22,000 students, with a twelve-storey library, twelve teaching buildings, provincial and national laboratories and a student activity centre. Hangzhou is one of China’s seven ancient capitals, about 176 km from Shanghai and roughly 50 minutes away by high-speed rail. Housing is straightforward but singular: the 2026 guide lists one accommodation price, a double room at RMB 5,400 a year, with bedding, water and electricity charged separately to the student.

Dining
The Xiasha residential area has eight canteens, including a dedicated international students’ canteen serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night meals. The first canteen is on the ground floor of B17, with a Chinese fast-food outlet above it and a specialty-cuisine restaurant on the third floor; a third canteen and a staff canteen are in B1, and the fifth and sixth are in B9. HDU publishes neither meal prices nor halal information on its international pages, so check on arrival.

A twelve-storey library on the Xiasha campus, twelve teaching buildings and provincial and national laboratories, serving the 11 colleges based there.
Student activity centre and sport
The Xiasha campus student activity centre houses sports facilities and dining outlets. HDU does not itemise its sports venues for international students on its English pages.
Health cover and medical checks
Insurance is listed at RMB 800 a year and the foreigner physical examination at RMB 460 per examination, both paid by the student. Applicants submit both a Foreigner Physical Examination Form and an International Student Health Report downloaded from the HDU site.
Visa and residence permit
Admitted students download the JW202 form from the online application system for their X visa, and a residence-permit application costs RMB 400 each time. The School of International Education publishes a visa application system note and a temporary-residence registration form for foreigners under its downloads.
Services and city
The school’s service pages cover transport, banking, medical insurance, dining, mail and local tourism. Hangzhou averages 16.2°C a year with about 1,500 mm of rain, and the Wenyi campus is a 20-minute walk from West Lake.

Bedding, water and electricity are extra, and the guide does not say whether a room is guaranteed, whether single rooms exist or whether living off campus is allowed, so raise those with the school. Which programs are taught in English?+
Most of the international list. Eight of the eleven undergraduate majors are English-taught and the other three — digital economy, business management and communication science — are offered in either language. At master’s level eight majors are English-taught and four more are offered in either language; at doctoral level two are English-taught and six more are English or Chinese. Only four are Chinese-only: international Chinese language education, industrial engineering and management, logistics engineering and management, and the management science and engineering doctorate.
