About Zhejiang Gongshang University
Zhejiang Gongshang University (浙江工商大学, ZJSU) traces its origins to the Hangzhou Commercial School (杭州中等商业学堂), founded on 15 March 1911 — one of the earliest specialised schools of commerce established in China. Over the following century it changed its name sixteen times and moved twelve times, becoming Hangzhou Institute of Commerce (杭州商学院) in 1980 and taking its present name in 2004. Its degree-awarding powers followed the same path: bachelor’s in 1980, master’s in 1990 and doctoral in 2003.
ZJSU is jointly built by the Zhejiang Provincial Government, the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Education, and is counted among Zhejiang’s key comprehensive universities. It is not on the national Double First-Class list and was never in Project 985 or Project 211. The university occupies three campuses — Xiasha, in Hangzhou’s Qiantang District, where international students study and live; Jiaogong Road, closer to the city centre; and Tonglu — covering 1.83 million square metres in total.
Teaching spans ten disciplinary areas — economics, management, law, literature, science, engineering, history, philosophy, art and interdisciplinary studies — through 71 undergraduate majors, 7 first-level doctoral programs and 16 first-level master’s programs in 17 schools and departments. The university reports more than 27,000 full-time undergraduates (including its independent college) and over 7,400 postgraduates, taught by 2,700-plus staff, of whom more than 2,200 are full-time teachers; 1,510 hold doctorates, 130 supervise doctoral students and three are academicians.
Two official pages count the international student body differently: the university profile says more than 770, the College of International Education says over 1,000 from more than 100 countries and regions. Neither is dated, so read them as a range.

The Xiasha campus sits in Hangzhou’s Qiantang District, in the city that hosts Alibaba’s headquarters; ZJSU’s School of Management and E-Business also carries the name School of Cross-border E-commerce.
Admission
Admission, programs & tuition
Zhejiang Gongshang University admits international students to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and to non-degree Chinese language programs. Degree applications for the 2026 cycle ran from March to 15 June 2026 and are made only online, at hzic.at0086.cn/student — the college does not accept hard copies, admits degree students for the autumn semester only, and takes no transfer students (anyone moving to ZJSU restarts in the first year). A complete submission is reviewed in about two weeks, with the answer sent to the system inbox and by email. The big change this cycle is the CSCA: from the 2026/2027 intake undergraduate applicants must in principle supply a valid China Scholastic Competence Assessment transcript, first sat on 21 December 2025. Master’s and doctoral applicants are exempt from it.

Application requirements
- Non-Chinese citizen with a valid foreign passport, in good health and of good conduct, under 25 at the time of application.
- Applicants who were once Chinese nationals must have held the foreign passport for at least four years and have actually lived abroad for two of those four years (Ministry of Education document No. 12 [2020]).
- High-school graduation, with notarised certificates and full transcripts.
- Chinese-taught programs: an HSK Level 4 or above certificate. The Business Chinese track accepts HSK Level 3 with conditional admission, provided the student reaches HSK 4 in the first year.
- English-taught programs: non-native English speakers need IELTS 5.5, TOEFL 80 or Duolingo 90. Those whose previous stage was taught in English or Chinese may be exempted — the FAQ says to ask the office rather than assume.
- A valid CSCA transcript, required in principle from the 2026/2027 intake. Mathematics is the common subject; Chinese-taught programs add Professional Chinese (liberal-arts or science version), English-taught ones do not. Business Chinese applicants scoring 180+ in HSK 4 are exempt from the Chinese paper.

Seven English-taught master’s programs — business administration, computer science and technology, tourism management, linguistics and applied linguistics, English language and literature, financial statistics with risk management and actuarial science, and international (digital) trade — alongside about 25 Chinese-taught programs in environmental engineering, design, management science, humanities, public administration and oriental languages.

Non-degree programs
Chinese Language and Culture Program
General Chinese language study with culture content, open to non-Chinese citizens aged 18 to 60 who have completed secondary education. Applicants who already studied Chinese in China must show a completion certificate with at least 90% attendance; holders of a Chinese degree, and anyone who has already spent two years or more in such a program, are not eligible. Autumn 2026 applications ran from March to 1 May on the program page, while the FAQ gives March to August for autumn and September to February for spring — either way, enrolment closes once the places are filled.

Summer School — Chinese language and culture
Two levels: a junior class for HSK 1–2 learners combining basic language with poetry, music, tea and festivals, and an intermediate class for HSK 3–4 learners adding cuisine, folklore, music and philosophy. Open to passport holders aged 18 and over with no criminal record; applications closed on 1 June 2026 and a class only opens if at least seven students enrol.

YES Project — Young Envoys Scholarship
A short cross-cultural exchange built around traditional Chinese culture, basic Mandarin and the development of Hangzhou and Zhejiang. Open to American and European passport holders aged 16 to 45 — high-school students through PhD candidates, plus faculty and researchers — in good health with no criminal record. Applications for 2026 closed on 31 May.

Registration and the start of the autumn semester
Sep 2026Check-in runs 08:30–16:30 at the College of International Education building and 17:00–24:00 on registration day at the International Student Apartment reception. Free airport pick-up is offered at Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport with 72 hours’ notice.
Tuition is charged per academic year: RMB 18,000–25,000 for bachelor’s programs, RMB 25,000–30,000 for master’s programs and RMB 30,000–33,000 for the doctoral programs in the 2026 catalogues. ZJSU’s general fee schedule also carries an art rate of RMB 36,000 a year at doctoral level, which does not appear in the 2026 catalogues — confirm the figure for your own program. The Finance (CFA) undergraduate track adds an RMB 38,000 CFA project fee over the four years. Beyond tuition, budget the RMB 400 application fee (non-refundable whatever the outcome), accommodation, compulsory medical insurance at RMB 800 a year, a medical examination of about RMB 500, roughly RMB 400 for the visa, and books at cost; dormitory water and electricity are billed separately.

Scholarships
ZJSU lists Chinese Government Scholarship channels, the Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship, the ZJSU President Scholarship, the ZJSU General Scholarship, a scholarship for Chinese-language students and the International Chinese Language Teachers (Confucius Institute) Scholarship. For the university and provincial awards there is no separate paper form: you complete your program application in the online system, then open the scholarship application in the same account and choose the award (for the General Scholarship the path is “Chinese School Scholarship → Zhejiang Gongshang University International Student Scholarship”). Every brochure advises scholarship applicants to submit before 1 May, and results normally arrive in July or August by email and in the application system. Chinese Government Scholarship (three channels)
ZJSU states only that it is a receiving institution and that the quota follows the notice issued by the competent authorities. Its scholarship pages do not publish coverage, stipend or eligibility for these channels, so take the terms from the China Scholarship Council and confirm the ZJSU-side deadline with the admissions office.
Eligibility: Three channels are listed: the Bilateral Program, applied for through your home country’s dispatching authority; the Chinese Government Scholarship — Zhejiang Gongshang University Program, the university-run channel; and the Sino-U.S. Cultural Exchange Scholarship for Degree Students. In all three you must also register and submit on the ZJSU online system.
Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship — Type A
RMB 30,000 per year.
Eligibility: Postgraduate applicants: non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport, good conduct and outstanding academic performance, holding a bachelor’s degree and aged 35 or under, with documented Chinese proficiency. Holders of another government scholarship are not eligible. Apply inside the ZJSU online system.
Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship — Type B
RMB 20,000 per year.
Eligibility: Undergraduate applicants: non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport, good conduct and outstanding academic performance, holding a high-school certificate and aged 30 or under, with documented Chinese proficiency and no other government scholarship. This is the award ZJSU links from its 2026 undergraduate materials.
ZJSU President Scholarship
Grade A covers tuition, on-campus accommodation and living expenses, with a monthly stipend of RMB 2,000 for doctoral students or RMB 1,200 for master’s students. Grade B covers tuition and accommodation only, calculated on the double-room standard of RMB 7,800 a year.
Eligibility: Graduate applicants — master’s need a bachelor’s degree, doctoral applicants a master’s — in good health and complying with Chinese law and university rules. Records should average above 80, though outstanding research can offset a lower average, and priority goes to applicants from Belt and Road countries. No other scholarship may be held at the same time.
ZJSU General Scholarship for International Students
For newly admitted degree students: first class 100% of the annual tuition, second class 70%, third class 40%. For students already enrolled: first class 70%, second class 50%, third class 30%.
Eligibility: Non-Chinese citizens in good health who comply with Chinese law and university rules. New students need a good previous record or outstanding achievement elsewhere and no negative records; enrolled students need at least 80% attendance, no overdue fees and passes in all final examinations. New students apply online, enrolled students through their own school.
ZJSU Chinese Language and Culture Program Scholarship
New students: first prize RMB 4,000, second prize RMB 3,000, third prize RMB 2,000. Enrolled language students are assessed each semester from their second semester, in an Outstanding Student category and an HSK-level category.
Eligibility: Language students who abide by Chinese law and university rules and perform well. New students must have paid tuition and accommodation in full before registration; enrolled students need 90% attendance, good final-examination results and no unexcused absences. Each semester the college publishes its own closing date; results come in January–February for spring and July–August for autumn.
International Chinese Language Teachers (Confucius Institute) Scholarship
ZJSU lists this scholarship but publishes no coverage, categories or deadlines for it. The terms are set by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation, so check them there and confirm with the college that ZJSU is accepting applications for your intake.
Eligibility: Not stated on the ZJSU page — ask the College of International Education at admissionzjsu@163.com before building a plan around this award.
Research
Research at the university
ZJSU’s research is concentrated where its teaching has always been strongest — statistics, business and accounting, applied economics and law — with two engineering-side clusters, food science and biotechnology and computer science, carrying most of its international recognition. Statistics was rated A in the Ministry of Education’s fourth national discipline evaluation, the university’s only A grade, and six further disciplines were rated B. Six fields sit in the global ESI top 1%.
Statistics and data science
The flagship discipline, rated A nationally. The School of Statistics and Data Science teaches an English-taught master’s and doctorate in financial statistics, risk management and insurance actuarial science.
Food science and biotechnology
Ranked #19 in the world for food science and technology in the ShanghaiRanking GRAS 2026, and the reason agricultural science sits in the ESI top 3‰. Five English-taught doctoral programs cover food nutrition, food safety, agricultural and aquatic product processing and food biotechnology.
Business, accounting and applied economics
Business administration and applied economics were both rated B nationally; ZJSU is the only university in Zhejiang with a doctoral program in accounting and ran the province’s first master’s in auditing.
Computer science and cross-border e-business
Computer science and technology was rated B and is in the ESI top 1%. The School of Management and E-Business also operates as the School of Cross-border E-commerce, tying research to Zhejiang’s digital trade economy.
Law, humanities and public policy
Law and foreign language and literature were both rated B. The university hosts a Ministry of Education key research base for the humanities and social sciences, a provincial new-type key think tank and a provincial key cultivated think tank.

ZJSU is designated a university with internationalised characteristics in Zhejiang, and its international work runs on two tracks: bringing students in through the College of International Education, and running joint programs and a Confucius Institute abroad. The College of International Education runs more than 40 foreign-language-taught majors — 15 undergraduate, 25 master’s and 11 doctoral courses — with students placed across 18 discipline colleges and supported by 37 college staff, 19 of them full-time teachers of Chinese as a foreign language.

Career & alumni
ZJSU is a business university in a business city: Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang, the headquarters city of Alibaba and a centre of e-commerce, digital trade and private enterprise, and the university’s strongest fields — accounting, statistics, applied economics, business administration and cross-border e-business — sit directly on top of that economy. ZJSU does not publish employment statistics or graduate destinations for its international students, so treat any percentage you see elsewhere with suspicion and ask the College of International Education what its own graduates have gone on to do.
Career support
- The College of International Education maintains an alumni association for international graduates, with member introductions, an outstanding-alumni showcase and alumni activities.
- Programs are run inside the 17 discipline schools rather than a separate international faculty, so international students sit with Chinese classmates and use the same school-level employer contacts.
- The School of Business Administration (MBA), the School of Accounting and the School of Management and E-Business — also named the School of Cross-border E-commerce — anchor the university’s links to Zhejiang employers.
- English-taught degrees exist at all three levels, so a student who arrives without Chinese can finish a degree — but employability in Hangzhou rises sharply with HSK-level Chinese.
- Visa conversion, residence permits and renewals are handled by the college’s management division rather than a separate careers office.

Campus life
Campus life
International students are based on the Xiasha campus at 18 Xuezheng Street, in Hangzhou’s Qiantang District, and live in the international student apartment in the neighbouring Jinshagang residential area. Hangzhou itself is part of the draw: one of China’s seven ancient capitals, built around the West Lake that UNESCO listed as World Heritage in 2011, and now the country’s e-commerce capital. A city transport card costs RMB 20 and covers buses, the metro and public bicycles; taxis start at RMB 11 for three kilometres, then RMB 2.5 per kilometre. On arrival, X1 visa holders must convert to a residence permit within 30 days of entry and register their residence with the college’s visa office within 24 hours; renewals must be filed 30 days before expiry, and the office turns away materials once a permit has three days left.

Five dining halls serve the university — Xingyun, Liushui and Qingfeng on the Xiasha campus, Xinlan and Shenglan on Jiaogong Road — and all of them offer late-night meals and halal food.

Libraries
Two libraries, the Xiasha one covering 42,000 square metres. The collection totals 4.31 million volumes — 2.63 million printed, 1.68 million electronic — with Chinese and foreign periodicals and 65 electronic databases.
Sport and recreation
Sports facilities cover 128,828 square metres, including a stadium seating 11,200, nine indoor venues for swimming, basketball, volleyball and badminton, and two outdoor grounds with 400-metre all-weather tracks.
Health care and insurance
Campus hospitals on both main campuses run internal medicine, surgery and stomatology alongside outpatient care. Comprehensive medical insurance is compulsory at RMB 800 a year, covering accidental injury, outpatient and inpatient treatment and death or disability at public hospitals nationwide, and excluding dental crowns, glasses, childbirth and pre-existing chronic conditions. Applicants who do not buy it are not admitted, and enrolled students who let it lapse can be expelled.
Student life
The Association of Students for International Exchange has about 60 Chinese and international members across five departments and stages the International Culture Festival, the Sino-International Students Gala and the Chinese Food Journey. It was rated a four-star association in ZJSU’s 2026 evaluation.
Housing logistics
The apartment holds around 600 people. Rooms go in the order reservations arrive, and a reservation needs a receipt for at least 50% of the first year’s fee uploaded into the application system. Degree students may change rooms twice; pets and overnight guests are not allowed and visitors must leave by 22:00. Living off campus needs university approval and a lease document.

Master’s programs cost RMB 25,000–30,000 a year, the 2026 doctoral catalogues RMB 30,000–33,000. The Chinese Language and Culture Program is RMB 14,000 a year or RMB 7,000 a semester, and every application costs a non-refundable RMB 400.
What language test do I need for ZJSU?+
Chinese-taught programs at every level require HSK Level 4 or above; the Business Chinese undergraduate track accepts HSK Level 3 with conditional admission if you reach HSK 4 in your first year. English-taught programs ask non-native speakers for IELTS 5.5, TOEFL 80 or Duolingo 90 at undergraduate level and IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 80 or Duolingo 100 at master’s and doctoral level. Native English speakers and applicants whose previous degree was taught in English may be exempt, but ZJSU’s own FAQ says to ask the office rather than assume.
Do I have to take the CSCA test to apply for a bachelor’s degree?+
Yes, in principle. From the 2026/2027 intake undergraduate applicants must provide a valid China Scholastic Competence Assessment transcript. Mathematics is the common subject for every ZJSU undergraduate program; Chinese-taught programs add a Professional Chinese paper in a liberal-arts or science version, English-taught ones do not, and Business Chinese applicants scoring 180+ in HSK 4 are exempt from the Chinese paper. The first sitting was 21 December 2025 and from 2026 the test runs five times a year — January, March, April, June and December. Master’s and doctoral applicants are exempt.
When is the application deadline for the 2026 intake?+
Degree applications for the autumn 2026 intake ran from March to 15 June 2026, and ZJSU admits degree students for the autumn semester only. Scholarship applicants were advised to submit before 1 May. The Chinese Language and Culture Program for autumn 2026 closed on 1 May on its own page, and the Summer School on 1 June. Applications are made only online at hzic.at0086.cn/student.
What scholarships can international students get at ZJSU?+
The Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship pays RMB 30,000 a year at postgraduate level (Type A) and RMB 20,000 at undergraduate level (Type B). The ZJSU President Scholarship covers tuition, accommodation and living expenses with a monthly stipend of RMB 2,000 for doctoral or RMB 1,200 for master’s students at grade A, or tuition and accommodation at grade B. The ZJSU General Scholarship waives 100%, 70% or 40% of annual tuition for new degree students, and language students have their own RMB 2,000–4,000 award. ZJSU is also a Chinese Government Scholarship receiving institution but does not publish those channels’ terms.
Where do international students live and what does it cost?+
In Building No. 4 of the Jinshagang residential area next to the Xiasha campus, a block for around 600 students. A double room costs RMB 650 per person per month with an RMB 800 deposit; a quad room is RMB 250 per person per month with an RMB 500 deposit on the Fees and reservation pages, though the 2026 brochures say RMB 300 — confirm before budgeting. Water and electricity are extra, and rooms go to whoever reserves first.
Is there an age limit for applying to ZJSU?+
Yes, and it is tighter than at many Chinese universities: undergraduate applicants must be under 25, master’s applicants under 35 and doctoral applicants under 45. The Chinese Language and Culture Program takes ages 18 to 60 and the Summer School 18 and over. Applicants who once held Chinese nationality must also have held their foreign passport for at least four years and lived abroad for two of those four.
