About Guangdong University of Technology
Guangdong University of Technology began undergraduate teaching in 1958 and took its present form in 1995, when the former Guangdong Institute of Technology (广东工学院), Guangdong Institute of Machinery (广东机械学院) and the East Campus of South China Construction College (华南建设学院东院) were merged. It is a provincial key university run by Guangdong Province and one of the institutions singled out for priority support under Guangdong’s high-level university construction programme. It is not on the national Double First-Class list, which matters if you are comparing it with national universities in the same city.
The main university sits in Guangzhou and is spread over several campuses — University Town (大学城), Dongfeng Road (东风路), Longdong (龙洞), Panyu (番禺) and Shahe (沙河), plus a campus in Jieyang in eastern Guangdong — with a combined area of more than 5,300 mu. For international students the three that matter are the ones with international dormitories: University Town, Dongfeng Road and Longdong. The International Exchange College, which handles international admissions, is based in the Library building on the Dongfeng Road campus in Yuexiu District.
According to the university’s own introduction (data updated June 2026), GDUT has 26 schools and two public teaching departments, 94 undergraduate majors, more than 55,000 students — about 40,000 undergraduates and more than 15,000 postgraduates — and more than 4,400 staff. It holds 16 doctoral degree authorisations (12 first-level disciplines and 4 professional doctorates) and 46 master’s authorisations (25 first-level disciplines and 21 professional degrees). The same page counts 780 international students from 82 countries and regions. The university’s older English-language site gives lower, undated figures (around 50,000 students and 3,833 faculty); the Chinese introduction is the more recent source.

Discipline-banded tuition

E-Commerce (newly added), Computer Science and Technology, and International Economics and Trade are open for enrolment; nine more engineering and business majors are listed on the same appendix as not yet open.

Admission, programs & tuition
GDUT admits international students to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and to a flexible Chinese language training programme, all through the International Exchange College (国际交流学院) and the online system at apply.gdut.edu.cn. The governing document for the autumn 2026 intake is the "2026 Spring Semester International Student Admission Guide" (广东工业大学2026年春季学期国际学生招生简章), published on 31 March 2026 — the name refers to when it was issued, not to a spring start: degree students enter only in the autumn semester and register from late August to early September 2026. The application deadline for all degree levels is 30 June 2026; Chinese language training recruits all year round. Applicants whose file passes the document review go on to an interview and assessment, and the university admits in batches. Age limits differ by level: 18 to 30 for undergraduates, no more than 40 for master’s and doctoral applicants, and at least 18 for language students. You may apply for at most two programmes, paying an application fee for each. Applicants who were formerly Chinese citizens, or whose parents are Chinese, must meet the Ministry of Education nationality rules: at least four years since naturalisation and at least two years of actual residence abroad within the four years up to 30 April of the entry year. The university has not published a 2027 admission guide yet, so every figure below is from the 2026 guide.

Application requirements
- Foreign citizen aged 18 to 30, in good physical and mental health and of good conduct.
- Senior high-school diploma or equivalent; students still at school submit a letter confirming expected graduation.
- Chinese-taught science and engineering majors: HSK Level 4 with 180 points or more. Chinese-taught humanities, social sciences and arts majors: HSK Level 5 with 180 points or more. Certificates must be within their validity period.
- English-taught majors: applicants whose native language is not English need TOEFL 80 or above or IELTS 5.5 or above.
- Passport valid for the whole period of study; the guide asks you not to renew your passport before registration, as that invalidates the electronic documents issued in the old one.
- Applicants who studied in China before must show their record from that study.
- Shortlisted applicants are interviewed before admission.
Master’s degreeGraduate
Two- to three-year master’s degrees. The 2026 graduate major list (Appendix 7) spans the university’s engineering schools plus management, foreign languages, mathematics, physics, design, law, architecture, economics, biomedicine, ecology, integrated circuits and sport, and marks professional degrees separately; all are full-time. The guide does not name any English-taught master’s programme, although it sets an English threshold for English-taught applicants — ask the office before assuming a programme is available in English.

Non-degree programs
Chinese Language Training Program
Open to foreign citizens aged 18 or over with no prior Chinese required, recruited all year round rather than to a deadline. Total Chinese language training in China may not exceed two years. Applicants who studied in China before must supply their visa pages, grades, attendance record, transfer certificate and entry–exit records. This is also the route for degree applicants who do not yet meet the HSK threshold.

Tuition at GDUT is banded by discipline rather than by programme: RMB 18,000 / 21,000 / 26,000 a year for Chinese-taught bachelor’s study in humanities, science and engineering, and arts; RMB 23,000 for every English-taught bachelor’s major; RMB 21,000 / 25,000 / 30,000 for master’s; and RMB 28,000 / 32,000 / 34,000 for doctoral study (2026 guide). The application fee is RMB 400 per programme, or RMB 500 for an English-taught bachelor’s major, and is not refunded whatever the outcome. On top come accommodation (RMB 4,000–21,600 a year on campus, plus a refundable RMB 1,500 deposit), compulsory insurance, and the physical examination and visa or residence-permit fees charged at cost by the agencies concerned. The guide does not state the insurance premium, so ask the office. Under the university’s fee and refund rules (March 2025), first-year tuition is paid in full before enrolment and can then be paid semester by semester.

Scholarships
GDUT’s own admission guide names only one scholarship for international students: the Guangdong Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship (广东省政府来粤留学生奖学金), for students with excellent academic records, leadership or special talents. It is a one-off cash award rather than a fee waiver, and it cannot be combined with any other scholarship held in China in the same academic year, including Chinese Government and Confucius Institute scholarships. The university’s international pages do not list any Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) channel or university-funded scholarship, so budget on paying full tuition and ask the International Exchange College whether anything further is available for your intake.
Guangdong Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship
A one-off award of RMB 10,000 for bachelor’s students, RMB 20,000 for master’s students and RMB 30,000 for doctoral students. It does not cover tuition or accommodation directly.
Eligibility: Open to new and current students. New students: bachelor’s applicants under 30 with a high-school diploma, master’s applicants under 35 with a bachelor’s degree, doctoral applicants under 40 with a master’s degree, with an excellent academic record; bachelor’s applicants need recommendations from their principal and a teacher, graduate applicants two from professors or associate professors. Current students: under 40, at least one year at GDUT, good or better grades in every required course that year. Holders of any other Chinese scholarship in the same year are excluded. Applications run 1 May to 30 June; GDUT’s committee assesses them before review by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, and winners are announced publicly.

GDUT’s research is applied and closely tied to manufacturing in the Pearl River Delta. Its flagship platforms are two national key laboratories — the province-ministry co-built State Key Laboratory of Precision Electronic Manufacturing Technology and Equipment and the National Key Laboratory of High-Performance Tools — plus a national-local joint engineering laboratory for manufacturing Internet of Things technology and a national-local joint engineering research centre for cyber-physical systems in intelligent manufacturing. Much of this activity sends Chinese students abroad: the university’s School of International Education on the Panyu campus runs dual-degree programmes with partners in Germany, the UK, Australia and the United States, and the international office lists exchanges and joint programmes with institutions such as RWTH Aachen, UC Riverside, UNSW Sydney, Monash, Nantes, the Autonomous University of Barcelona and Korean partners. For an international student this mostly shapes the campus rather than your own options — international degree students are admitted separately through the International Exchange College. The college reports one Ministry of Education-approved Sino-foreign cooperative programme and 24 international joint training programmes.

GDUT does not publish employment or placement figures for its international graduates, and its international pages carry no dedicated careers service for international students. What it does state is scale: the university introduction says it has trained more than 600,000 graduates over 68 years. Campus life
International students live on campus in dedicated buildings on three campuses: Building East 11 at University Town (大学城) in Panyu District, Building 8 on the Dongfeng Road campus in the city centre, and Building G on the Longdong campus. Rooms come with a bed, desk, air-conditioning and hot water; bedding is not provided, and campus Wi-Fi, water and electricity are charged separately. A refundable deposit of RMB 1,500 is taken at check-in. Dormitory fees are paid in full before moving in and are calculated on a 12-month year. Students who want to live off campus need the International Exchange College’s approval, must sign a legal lease, and must register their residence at the local police station within 24 hours of moving in.

GDUT does not publish dining information or meal prices for international students on its international pages. The Dongfeng Road international dormitory has a shared kitchen with microwaves on each floor; budget for food separately and check canteen options on arrival.

Insurance
All international students must be insured; anyone who does not buy insurance within the set period is not admitted. The insurer’s claims line quoted by the college is 400-810-5119 — call it before going to hospital.
Visa and residence permit
Students coming for more than six months enter on an X1 visa, valid for 30 days after arrival, and must apply for a residence permit within 30 days; shorter stays use the X2 visa.

For Chinese-taught programmes at any degree level: HSK Level 4 with at least 180 points for science and engineering, or HSK Level 5 with at least 180 for humanities, social sciences and arts. For English-taught programmes, non-native speakers need TOEFL 80 or IELTS 5.5. The Chinese language training programme needs no prior Chinese.
Is there an age limit?+
Yes. Bachelor’s applicants must be 18 to 30, master’s and doctoral applicants no older than 40, and language students at least 18. The Guangdong Government scholarship sets its own limits for new students: under 30 for bachelor’s, under 35 for master’s and under 40 for doctoral study.
When is the application deadline?+
30 June 2026 for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral study starting in autumn 2026; new students register from late August to early September 2026. Chinese language training accepts applications all year. Guangdong Government scholarship applications run from 1 May to 30 June.
Are there scholarships for international students at GDUT?+
