About Tongji University
Tongji University (同济大学) traces itself to 1907, when the German physician Erich Paulun founded the Tongji German Medical School in Shanghai. Engineering was added in 1912, the school became a Chinese university in 1923 and a national university in 1927. It is directly administered by the Ministry of Education, was in Project 211 and Project 985, and in 2017 was placed in Category A of the national world-class university programme.
Tongji spreads across four main campuses — Siping Road, Jiading, Huxi and Hubei — plus research bases at Lingang and Zhangjiang, over roughly 2.75 square kilometres. Two matter to an international student: Siping Road in Yangpu District is the main campus and the address of the International Students Office, while Jiading in the north-west carries the automotive and transport disciplines.
As of May 2026 Tongji publishes 41,575 full-time students — 18,920 undergraduates, 12,713 master’s and 9,942 doctoral — plus 4,426 international students and 3,206 full-time teachers, including 18 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 29 of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. There are 33 colleges, 70 undergraduate majors open to admission and 12 affiliated hospitals. Founded by German doctors in 1907, Tongji now runs 13 international cooperation platform colleges — Sino-German, Sino-French, Sino-Italian, Sino-Finnish, Sino-Spanish and the UNEP institute.
The built environment is the flagship
Five of the eight Double First-Class disciplines are built-environment fields; Architecture & Built Environment placed 12th in the world and Civil & Structural Engineering 13th in QS’s 2026 subject tables.
Two campuses, and a price per major
Siping Road holds the admissions office and most international dormitory stock; Jiading sits well outside the centre, and your college decides which. Tongji also publishes no single tuition band per level — its Fees & Costs table prices dozens of programmes, from RMB 20,000 a year to RMB 154,000.

Admission, programs & tuition
Tongji admits international students to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and to non-degree routes, all through study-info.tongji.edu.cn. Two things shape the 2026 cycle: undergraduate applicants must now sit the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA), run by the China Scholarship Council, and upload the score report, with the subjects for each major set in a separate attachment; and the postgraduate cycle runs on two windows, the first closing in December. Age limits run 18–25 (scholarship) or 18–35 (self-funded) at undergraduate level, 35/45 at master’s and 40/50 at doctoral. Tongji issues no pre-admission certificate and, in its FAQ’s words, "We do not accept transfer student"; its CSC agency number is 10247.

Four-year degrees, taught mostly in Chinese across Tongji’s 70 admitting majors. Only three are taught in English: Architecture (International Class), Civil Engineering (International Class) and the six-year MBBS. Admission is by document review then a written examination or interview run by the college you applied to, which decides.

Application requirements
- Non-Chinese citizen in good health with a senior high-school diploma. Scholarship applicants 18–25; self-funded 18–35, counted to 31 December of the application year. Under-18s need a guardian living in mainland China.
- CSCA: every undergraduate applicant takes the test and uploads the score report; subjects are set per major in a separate attachment.
- Chinese-taught majors: HSK 5 with 180 or above, valid two years — except the Chinese-language major, which asks HSK 4 with 180 for year one, HSK 5 for year two and HSK 6 for year three.
- MBBS: the School of Medicine page sets IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 85, waived for applicants schooled in English, and an age band of 18–25; it still carries the 2023–24 cycle’s dates, as does the 10% first-year tuition rebate it mentions, so confirm both.
- High-school certificate and transcripts, personal statement, physical examination form taken within six months, and proof the RMB 600 fee is paid; self-funded applicants then pay tuition within two weeks of pre-admission.

- Chinese-taught programmes: HSK 5 with 180 or above — waived if your bachelor’s degree was taught in Chinese, on a certificate of the language of instruction. Teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages asks HSK 5 with 210 plus HSKK (intermediate) at 60.
- English-taught programmes: TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.0, or proof of a previous degree taught in English.
- Notarised bachelor’s certificate and transcripts, personal statement, two recommendation letters, physical examination form, proof of payment, and a portfolio of at most 20 pages for the College of Design and Innovation.

Doctoral study across 42 first-level disciplines, with a broad English-taught list: the Sino-German programmes, business administration, mechanics, mechanical and software engineering, aeronautics, architecture, materials science, environmental engineering and design. Tongji’s 2026 document list does not require a supervisor’s acceptance letter, unusually among Chinese universities — the college interview decides, so approach a supervisor early.

Non-degree programs
Long-term Chinese Language Program
Six levels across three bands — Junior (A–B), Intermediate (C–D), Advanced (E–F) — open to foreign nationals aged 18 to 55 with a senior high-school certificate or above. Spring entry is late February or early March, applications November–December; autumn entry early September, applications March to 10 June. The CSC covers one-year language study; the Shanghai award does not.

Pre-University Program
Tongji says it was one of the first universities appointed to run pre-university education for Chinese Government Scholarship undergraduates. Applicants must be at least 18 — by 31 December of the application year for autumn entry, 31 August for spring — and September entrants to the Pre-Economic Management Program need HSK 3 or above. Completing students get a Tongji certificate and priority for its undergraduate programmes; applications run November–December for spring, March–June for autumn.

General and Senior Visiting Student
Non-degree study attached to a host college, ending in a certificate of advanced study. The general route needs a year of college-level study; the senior route is for applicants who already hold a master’s degree, at a rate two-thirds higher. Language bands are set by discipline: HSK 4 with 180 for science and engineering, HSK 4 with 200 for architecture, management and medicine, HSK 5 with 180 for liberal arts; English-taught study asks TOEFL 80 or IELTS 6.0. Applications run 10 March to 31 May for autumn, 10 September to 30 November for spring.
Fee · RMB 1,230 per credit (general) or RMB 2,050 (senior), at least 8 credits per semester, plus RMB 600 application fee and RMB 800 / year insurance
Exchange programs
Tongji accepts only exchange students nominated by a partner university, so the route starts at your own international office. Applications follow the non-degree calendar — by 20 December 2025 for spring 2026, 10 January to 30 June 2026 for autumn — and nominated students form one of the three Tongji Excellence Scholarship tracks.
Fee · Tongji publishes no exchange fee on its English pages — what you pay is set by the agreement between your home university and Tongji
Documents to prepare
- Passport information page; applicants already in China also supply the current visa or residence permit page.
- Highest academic credential — high-school certificate, notarised bachelor’s or notarised master’s certificate — plus full transcripts. Documents in Chinese or English may be photocopies; anything else needs ORIGINAL notarised translations certified by an embassy, not a scan.
- CSCA score report — undergraduate applicants only; it is not on the master’s or doctoral lists.
- Language evidence, which differs by level: HSK 5 with 180 for Chinese-taught study at every level, with an exemption for master’s and doctoral applicants whose previous degree was taught in Chinese that the undergraduate guide does not offer; TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.0 for English-taught postgraduate study; IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 85 for MBBS.
- Personal statement; two recommendation letters for master’s and doctoral applicants only; Foreigner Physical Examination Form taken within six months; proof the RMB 600 fee is paid; a portfolio of at most 20 pages for design applicants; and a guardian guarantee letter for under-18s.

Tongji prices tuition per programme, not per level: RMB 20,000–45,000 a year at undergraduate level, RMB 22,960–154,000 at master’s and RMB 30,000–68,000 at doctoral level. Add the non-refundable RMB 600 application fee and compulsory accidental injury and hospitalisation insurance at RMB 400 per semester, RMB 800 a year, paid at registration. The previous intake’s guidebook also listed RMB 500 for the on-arrival medical check. Accommodation is extra and, Tongji warns, very limited.

Scholarships
There is no single Tongji scholarship form. The Chinese Government Scholarship Bilateral Program goes through the dispatching authority or Chinese embassy in your own country, usually November to March; everything else is applied for inside the Tongji online application. At undergraduate level, check which awards are open to you at all: the 2026 guide restricts the Bilateral and Silk Road Programs and the Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship to Chinese-taught programmes, and opens the Tongji Excellence Scholarship only to English-taught ones.
Chinese Government Scholarship — Bilateral Program
Full or partial, set by the China Scholarship Council. The full scholarship waives tuition, gives a free dormitory or a housing subsidy (CNY 700 a month for undergraduates and master’s students, CNY 1,000 for doctoral), pays CNY 2,500 / 3,000 / 3,500 a month by level, and covers medical insurance.
Eligibility: Applied for through the dispatching authority or Chinese embassy in your home country, generally November to March. At Tongji it is open at undergraduate level only to Chinese-taught programmes; master’s applicants must be 35 or under, doctoral 40 or under.
Chinese Government Scholarship — High-Level Postgraduate and Silk Road Programs at Tongji
Funding terms are set by the China Scholarship Council; Tongji does not restate them.
Eligibility: The High-Level Postgraduate Program is for master’s and doctoral applicants applying directly to Tongji, tied to the first window — 25 October to 20 December 2025. The Silk Road Program is undergraduate only: "admission is open exclusively to the Chinese-taught undergraduate programs".
Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship
Type A, the full scholarship, covers tuition, accommodation, living expenses and medical insurance; Type B covers tuition and insurance only. The Shanghai Municipal Education Commission does not publish the living-expense amounts.
Eligibility: Non-Chinese citizens in good health with outstanding academic performance and at least HSK 4, holding no other Chinese government scholarship. Age limits: 25 undergraduate, 35 master’s, 40 doctoral. Applied for through Tongji in the January-to-March window, and restricted to Chinese-taught undergraduate programmes.
Tongji University International Student Excellence Scholarship
Three tracks, all with a full tuition waiver and medical insurance. English-taught undergraduates: accommodation or CNY 700 a month, plus CNY 2,500 a month. High-level doctoral students: accommodation or CNY 3,000 a month, CNY 5,000 a month and a one-off graduation travel grant of CNY 12,000. High-level exchange students: CNY 700 or 1,000 a month for housing by level, plus CNY 2,500–3,500 a month.
Eligibility: Undergraduate applicants aged 18–25; doctoral and exchange applicants 40 or under. Academic bar of 85/100 or GPA 3.8/5.0, with HSK 5 at 180 for Chinese-taught study and TOEFL 85 or IELTS 6.5 for English-taught. Applications run from October of the year before enrolment to May, longer than the degree deadlines you must still meet.
Tongji University & Bank of China Global Talent Scholarship
Doctoral study only, and the most generous package Tongji runs: CNY 45,000 a year tuition waived, CNY 5,000 a month stipend, free on-campus accommodation or CNY 3,000 a month off campus, CNY 800 insurance waived, and one-off grants of CNY 5,000 for dissertation supervision and CNY 12,000 for travel.
Eligibility: Students from Europe and Belt and Road countries, aged 40 or under, with a master’s degree from a well-known foreign institution or a Chinese Double First-Class university, an average of 85 or GPA 3.8 or above and SCI-, EI- or SSCI-indexed papers. The window for spring 2026 entry was 25 October to 20 December 2025.
Marine Scholarship of China and the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
Terms are set by the national schemes; Tongji’s index carries no coverage figures and both entries date from 2020–2021, so confirm with the office.
Eligibility: The Marine Scholarship supports students from Pacific and Indian Ocean neighbouring countries and African developing countries for ocean-related graduate study; the other supports the international Chinese-teaching track.
Research
Research at the university
Tongji’s research is organised around the built environment and the moving parts inside it: civil engineering and disaster reduction, architecture and urban planning, transport and vehicles, marine geology, environment and sustainability, and stem-cell biology. It reports 6 national key laboratories and 6 national engineering research centres within 124 platforms at provincial level and above, and says it has built the world’s largest multi-functional shaking-table test centre and China’s first ground transportation wind tunnel centre.
Civil engineering & disaster reduction
The State Key Laboratory of Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering is Tongji’s best-known platform, and the multi-hazard prevention hall beside it houses the shaking-table work.
Architecture, planning, transport and vehicles
Three of the eight Double First-Class disciplines are architecture, planning and landscape — the cluster that put Architecture & Built Environment 12th in the world in QS 2026 — while China’s first ground transportation wind tunnel centre anchors automotive and rail research at Jiading.
Environment, oceans and life science
Environmental science and engineering is a Double First-Class discipline taught internationally through the UNEP-Tongji institute; the School of Ocean and Earth Science runs marine geology, and biology anchors the Frontier Science Center for Stem Cell and Fate Editing.

Global engagement
Tongji describes its partner network as built around Germany, focused on Europe and radiating worldwide, with more than 300 partner institutions and thirteen international cooperation platform colleges. It founded and first chaired the China Green University Network and the International Green Campus Alliance, and chairs the UNEP Global Universities Partnership on Environment and Sustainability. Several of the most interesting routes in start at a partner university abroad.
Chinesisch-Deutsches Hochschulkolleg (CDHK)
Founded in 1998 with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and described by Tongji as the flagship of Sino-German academic cooperation. It works with 27 German partner universities — TU Munich, Ruhr University Bochum, TU Berlin and TU Braunschweig offer dual master’s degrees — and 22 endowed professorships financed by German companies. Bilingual three-year master’s programmes run in electrical and mechanical engineering, automotive technology and economics.
Chinese-German University of Applied Sciences (CDHAW)
Established in 2004 by the Chinese and German education ministries with the DHIK consortium of 28 German universities. Four accredited double-degree bachelor programmes: mechatronics, building technology, automotive technology and service, and industrial engineering; German students spend their fourth year in Shanghai, Chinese students the reverse.
UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development
Established jointly with the United Nations Environment Programme in 2002 as a strategic think-tank for UNEP. It reports environmental education for students from 117 countries and capacity-building for over 5,000 participants from developing countries, and teaches the English-taught master’s in Environmental Management and Sustainable Development.

Career & alumni
Tongji says it has produced more than 400,000 graduates since its founding, and its alumni dominate Chinese civil engineering, bridge design and architecture — two of the three names below ran the university itself. For international students it publishes very little: the Employment Information page is a job noticeboard rather than a careers service, and no placement or salary data is published, so treat any such figure on an agency site as unsourced.

PhD at Tongji’s School of Architecture in 2000; won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2012, the first Chinese citizen to do so.
Wan Gang
Master’s at Tongji in 1981, President of Tongji 2003–2007, then Minister of Science and Technology 2007–2018 and a driver of China’s electric vehicle industry.
Li Guohao (1913–2005)
Studied civil engineering at Tongji from 1931, returned as professor in 1946 and became rector in 1977; a suspension-bridge specialist who worked on the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge.

Campus life
The most important thing to know about living at Tongji is that on-campus housing is scarce: the registration guidebook says that if bookings are full you must arrange off-campus housing yourself, names two agencies (Soka and Unijia) and suggests a hotel while you look. Full-scholarship students are allocated rooms; self-funded students select online at dorm.tongji.edu.cn. In March 2026 self-funded students in Siping Buildings 1 and 2 moved to the International Student Community at No. 888 Xiangyin Road, whose rates are not published in English.

Rooms have air conditioning and, depending on the building, a kettle, telephone, TV and refrigerator; the centres provide public kitchens and business services. Zhangwu Campus Building No. 4 offers 18 m² rooms at the same rate.

Dining
Tongji’s English accommodation page describes the International Student Service Center area at Siping as having two serviced apartment buildings, a restaurant and a café. No canteen locations or meal prices for international students are published, so budget for food separately — Shanghai is one of the more expensive Chinese cities to eat in.

How much is tuition at Tongji University for international students?+

Chinese-taught majors have the CSC Bilateral and Silk Road Programs and the Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship — Type A covering tuition, accommodation, living expenses and insurance, Type B tuition and insurance only, with age limits of 25, 35 and 40 by level. None apply to the three English-taught undergraduate programmes: there the Tongji Excellence Scholarship is the route, with a full tuition waiver, housing, CNY 2,500 a month and insurance.
Is there on-campus accommodation, and what does it cost?+
There is, but Tongji warns that on-campus housing is very limited and that you must arrange off-campus accommodation yourself if bookings are full. Published rates are per room per day: RMB 60–70 for Siping Building No. 1, RMB 70–80 for Siping No. 2 and Zhangwu No. 4, RMB 35–70 for Jiading No. 3. A semester’s rent is paid up front and is not refundable if you leave early. In March 2026 self-funded students moved to the International Student Community at 888 Xiangyin Road, for which no rates are published.
