About The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen
The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (香港中文大学（深圳）) was established in 2014 under the Regulations of the People’s Republic of China on Chinese-foreign Cooperation in Running Schools, with the approval of the Ministry of Education. The Ministry’s register lists it under approval number MOE44HKA01INR20141520N, names CUHK as the Hong Kong partner and Shenzhen University (深圳大学) as the mainland partner, approves it for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral education, and gives the permit an expiry date of 31 December 2044. Wikipedia dates the establishment to 21 March 2014 and calls the arrangement “one brand, two campuses”: graduates receive degrees of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, with a graduation certificate from CUHK-Shenzhen.
The practical consequence is that this is an English-medium university on mainland soil: “English is the primary teaching, learning and working language in our culturally diverse campus”, with physical education and Chinese-language courses the routine exceptions, taught bilingually. There are more than 20 undergraduate programmes across schools of Management and Economics, Science and Engineering, Humanities and Social Science, Data Science, Medicine, Music, Public Policy and, since February 2025, Artificial Intelligence. Undergraduates do not commit to a major when they apply — the choice is made at the end of the first year — and everyone belongs to one of eight residential colleges.
Scale figures differ between the university’s own pages. About Us describes “over 10,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students”, “over 650 world’s leading scholars and scientists” and a campus of 1.33 million square metres in Longgang District; the admissions site counts “over 470 professors”, among them five Nobel laureates, two Turing Award laureates and one Fields Medal winner. Rankings need the same care: CUHK-Shenzhen is not listed separately in the QS World University Rankings, and the line on its own About Us page — “CUHK ranked 36th according to QS World University Rankings 2025” — is the Hong Kong parent’s position, not Shenzhen’s.
QS ranks the Hong Kong parent university; CUHK-Shenzhen’s About Us page quotes CUHK’s 36th place in the 2025 edition, and QS’s own profile for CUHK-Shenzhen shows programme-level tables rather than a world position.
A Sino-foreign cooperative institution run by CUHK with Shenzhen University, approved for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral education; the permit runs to 31 December 2044.

The qualification is a degree of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Admission, fees and rankings are separate from the Hong Kong campus — applying to one is not applying to the other.
Taught in English
English is the primary teaching, learning and working language. Chinese is required in one place only: Clinical Medicine students must reach HSK 4 before progressing to Year 3.
One campus, eight residential colleges
A single 1.33 million m² campus in Longgang District, about 15 km from downtown Shenzhen. You are assigned to a college rather than choosing one, and told which in early July.
Priced like a private venture
Undergraduate tuition is RMB 140,000 a year. There is no subsidised international rate and, per the university’s FAQ, no Chinese Government Scholarship channel here.
Next door to Hong Kong
The admissions site calls Shenzhen adjacent to Hong Kong and the third largest metropolis in the mainland, and states that graduates qualify for Hong Kong’s IANG visa. Confirm current rules with the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

Admission, programs & tuition
Two front doors. Undergraduate international applicants apply through the International Students Undergraduate Admissions office at intladmissions.cuhk.edu.cn; master’s and doctoral applicants apply through the Graduate School at gs.cuhk.edu.cn, programme by programme, paying a non-refundable RMB 600 fee per programme. Undergraduate eligibility is strict and is checked: a non-Chinese passport held for at least four years and, for applicants of Chinese descent, no Chinese citizenship (or an official renunciation) plus residence outside China for at least two of the past four years. Holders of Chinese ID, hukou, passport or travel-permit documents are treated as Chinese citizens and must use the schemes at admissions.cuhk.edu.cn instead. Admission runs in Early Bird, Regular and Late rounds, and the round matters: entry-scholarship candidates “need to apply during the Early Bird Round and Regular Round before early March, 2026”, and you may apply only once per academic year. Some applicants are interviewed; you cannot request one. Exact round dates sit on the Application Rounds & Important Dates page; no 2027-entry notice had been published when this guide was verified, so the dates below are the 2026 cycle’s.

Application requirements
- A non-Chinese passport held for at least four years; applicants of Chinese descent must also not hold Chinese citizenship, or must have renounced it officially, and must have resided outside China for at least two of the last four years.
- Academic performance in roughly the top 20%: “an overall score in the top 20%” and core subjects — mathematics, English, and subjects related to your major — also in the top 20%. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee a place; admission is competitive.
- English-language evidence. The university recommends sitting IELTS or TOEFL “as early as possible, ideally a year ahead” if you hold no other accepted certificate; accepted tests and minimum scores are set out on its English Language Requirements page.
- Chinese is not required for entry. The exception is Clinical Medicine: students “must achieve HSK 4 (Chinese language proficiency) to progress to Year 3, where clerkship in a local hospital is required”.
- A financial statement showing CNY 60,000 or the equivalent, stamped by your or your sponsor’s bank, uploaded when you accept an offer.
- Applicants under 18 when the JW202 is issued (typically May or June) must complete the underage guardianship appointment; the guardian must be an adult Shenzhen resident, usually a staff member.
- One application per academic year. Admission and scholarship decisions are final; a rejection may be appealed, but the result is usually unchanged.
Master’s degreeGraduate
Taught master’s programmes run by the individual schools and admitted through the Graduate School, in English. Tuition is set programme by programme: the School of Public Policy prices its one-year MA in Public Policy at RMB 180,000, while the School of Science and Engineering runs two-year master’s programmes in Communications Engineering, Computer and Information Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. Deadlines vary by programme, and many schools run two rounds.

- English proficiency: TOEFL 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based or Home Edition), IELTS Academic 6.5, GMAT Band 21 (Verbal) or GMAT Focus Band 78 (Verbal). Exemptions cover a degree from a Hong Kong university or an English-medium programme, a pass in Hong Kong or GCE A-Level English, HKDSE English at Level 4 or above, and professional qualifications obtained in English.

Doctoral degreeGraduate
Research degrees on the MPhil–PhD model, admitted by the school through the Graduate School. Funding is decided at admission rather than applied for separately: the School of Data Science awards scholarships to selected applicants on overall academic performance, reviews them annually and requires holders to work as teaching assistants. Tuition is RMB 140,000 a year on that listing, so establish what scholarship you are offered before you accept.

Non-degree programs
Exchange and visiting study (Office of Academic Links)
Incoming exchange and visiting students are hosted by the residential colleges on the same terms as degree students: a four-bed dormitory with shared bathroom, furnished with a single bed, mattress, wardrobe, desk, bookcase and chair, with no bedding provided. The earliest check-in is one day before registration and receptions are staffed 24 hours a day. The Office of Academic Links handles nomination and admission.

Documents to prepare
- Passport information page — you must have held a non-Chinese passport for at least four years; holders of Chinese ID, hukou, passport or travel-permit documents are not eligible for this route.
- School-leaving qualification and full transcripts (undergraduate), or degree certificates and official transcripts (postgraduate); postgraduates enrolling in AY 2026-27 and later are asked for verification reports instead.
- English-language evidence. Undergraduate thresholds are on the English Language Requirements page; postgraduates need TOEFL 550 paper-based / 79 internet-based, IELTS Academic 6.5, or the GMAT verbal bands, unless exempt.
- HSK 4 — Clinical Medicine only, and not at application: it is the condition for progressing into Year 3.
- Financial statement with a balance of CNY 60,000 or the equivalent, issued and stamped by your or your sponsor’s bank.
- Underage guardianship documents if you are under 18 when the JW202 is issued, notarised or apostilled if you are still under 18 on 1 September of your admission year.

Read the fee table as a whole. For international undergraduates the university lists tuition at CNY 140,000 per academic year, accommodation at CNY 2,400, medical insurance at CNY 800, a one-time miscellaneous study fee of CNY 500, a residence permit at roughly CNY 1,200 and living costs of about CNY 2,000 a month — an academic year here means nine months, and the package is summed at “around USD 24,000 per academic year”. This is not a mainland public university price: as a Sino-foreign cooperative institution awarding CUHK degrees, its tuition is several times what a subsidised public university charges an international student. Outside the annual table sit the RMB 19,000 deposit due on accepting an offer, credited against first-year tuition, and the CNY 60,000 bank balance you must evidence. Scholarships
The funding picture is unusual for mainland China, and the first thing to understand is what is missing: the international admissions FAQ states that Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) sponsorship is not available at CUHK-Shenzhen. It funds international students from its own entry scholarships instead, awarded on the strength of your application — there is no separate form — but gated by timing: candidates “need to apply during the Early Bird Round and Regular Round before early March, 2026”, so a Late Round application is an application for a place, not for money. Selection is “a holistic review … based on your comprehensive profile, including but not limited to previous academic performance, curricular and extracurricular activities, leadership”. The Scholarship Offer comes separately from the Admission Offer, is final, and reimburses the RMB 19,000 deposit in October. Amounts and tiers are on the Scholarships & Work-Study Opportunities page; postgraduate funding is decided by the individual school.
Entry scholarships for international undergraduates
The university states that tuition fees “can be offset through successful scholarship applications”; the value is set out in the Scholarship Offer, issued separately from the Admission Offer and final. Eligibility: International undergraduate applicants who apply in the Early Bird or Regular Round, before early March 2026. No separate form is required — you are considered automatically, on a holistic review of academic performance, activities and leadership. Late Round applicants are not considered.
University and college awards after enrolment
Smaller awards, which the FAQ describes as under CNY 10,000, offered at university and residential-college level once you are enrolled.
Eligibility: Enrolled students. Recognition awards rather than a second route to a tuition waiver.
Research postgraduate scholarships (MPhil–PhD)
Awarded by the admitting school at admission and reviewed annually. On the School of Data Science’s listing, holders serve as teaching assistants for certain periods; no fixed stipend figure is published.
Eligibility: Selected PhD applicants, decided on overall academic performance. Terms are set school by school, so confirm the value, duration and teaching load before you accept.
Taught master’s programme scholarships
Set by the school running the programme. The School of Public Policy lists full and half tuition waivers, an Admission Scholarship of RMB 10,000 to 50,000, and an IIA Scholarship worth up to a full tuition waiver for its MA in Public Policy.
Eligibility: Applicants to that specific programme. Each school writes its own scheme, so one master’s scholarship tells you nothing about another.
Greater Bay Area–ASEAN Study Support Program
Additional support listed by the School of Public Policy for international students on its MA in Public Policy.
Eligibility: International applicants to the programmes that participate; ask the programme office whether it applies to the degree you want.
Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)
Not available. The international admissions FAQ states that CSC sponsorship cannot be used for study at CUHK-Shenzhen.
Eligibility: No one — the commonest funding mistake applicants make when comparing CUHK-Shenzhen with mainland public universities. A CSC award must be used at a participating institution.
Research
Research at the university
Research here is young by Chinese standards — the university is a decade old — and has been built by recruiting senior people rather than growing departments slowly. The admissions site counts more than 470 professors, among them five Nobel laureates, two Turing Award laureates and one Fields Medal winner; About Us describes the faculty more broadly as “over 650 world’s leading scholars and scientists”. Two of those Nobel laureates, Arieh Warshel and Brian Kobilka, lead laboratories that carry their names. The newer investment is in computing: a School of Artificial Intelligence joined the School of Data Science in February 2025. The university publishes no consolidated table of national key laboratories or research funding in English, so treat headline figures quoted elsewhere with caution.
Data science and artificial intelligence
The School of Data Science runs the MPhil–PhD stream priced at RMB 140,000 a year; a School of Artificial Intelligence was established in February 2025, the newest of the eight schools.
Chemistry and life science
Two Nobel laureate laboratories, led by Arieh Warshel and Brian Kobilka, anchor the university’s chemistry and biomedical work.
Engineering, materials and new energy
The School of Science and Engineering works across materials science, chemistry, physics, new energy science and engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and mathematics.

Global engagement
For a university founded in 2014 the outbound side is unusually developed. About Us reports “over 150 partner universities across the globe” and states that “over 60% of CUHK-Shenzhen students have credit-bearing overseas experiences”; the admissions site describes the same network more conservatively as “a global network of over 120 partner universities” and “over 200 international programmes”. Both figures are the university’s own; the point is that a term abroad is a normal part of the degree here. Inbound mobility is handled by the Office of Academic Links, which admits exchange and visiting students and houses them in the colleges.

Two things shape careers out of CUHK-Shenzhen: the degree is a CUHK degree, and the campus sits inside Shenzhen, a short ride from Hong Kong. The Career Planning and Development Office runs career training courses, resume and interview coaching, assessments, a graduate-study track, an on-campus test centre, a mentor programme and one-to-one counselling. The university publishes an annual employment quality report; the 2024 edition was released university-wide and the office published 2025 results for domestically recruited undergraduate graduates. Read those for what they are — they describe the mainland-recruited cohort, not the international one. No separate placement or salary statistics for international graduates appear on the English-language pages, so ask the office for cohort data. Neither the Fees & Expenses page nor the international admissions pages price individual meals or list canteen locations. What the university gives you is a budget: roughly CNY 2,000 a month for living expenses, food included, inside a total it sums at around USD 24,000 per academic year. Plan against that and ask the ISSS team about campus catering on arrival.

What scholarships can an international student actually get?+
Entry scholarships awarded at admission are the main route, and there is no separate form — you are considered automatically if you applied in the Early Bird or Regular Round before early March 2026. Selection is a holistic review of your profile, “including but not limited to previous academic performance, curricular and extracurricular activities, leadership”, and the award arrives as a Scholarship Offer separate from the Admission Offer. That offer is final, and an interview invitation is not a sign that you are being considered. Holders get the RMB 19,000 deposit reimbursed in October. After enrolment there are smaller university and college awards, under CNY 10,000 per the FAQ. At postgraduate level the school decides: research students may be funded at admission with teaching-assistant duties, and the MA in Public Policy lists full and half tuition waivers, an Admission Scholarship of RMB 10,000 to 50,000 and an IIA Scholarship of up to a full waiver. The Chinese Government Scholarship cannot be used here.
Where will I live, and what does it cost?+
In one of the eight residential colleges — Shaw, Diligentia, Muse, Harmonia, Ling, Minerva, Duan Family or the Eighth College — and you are assigned rather than choosing. On-campus accommodation is priced at CNY 2,400 per academic year. Rooms are four-bed with a shared bathroom and come furnished with a single bed, mattress, wardrobe, desk, bookcase and chair; bedding is not supplied. Receptions run 24/7, check-in opens the day before registration, and you learn your student ID and college assignment in early July.
Is CUHK-Shenzhen the same as CUHK in Hong Kong?+
The degree is the same institution’s — graduates receive a degree of The Chinese University of Hong Kong plus a CUHK-Shenzhen graduation certificate — but almost nothing else is shared. Admission is separate, fees are separate, and the campuses sit in different jurisdictions. Rankings are the sharpest trap: CUHK-Shenzhen is not listed separately in the QS World University Rankings, and the line on its About Us page quoting CUHK’s 36th place in 2025 refers to the Hong Kong parent.
