About Xidian University
Xidian University (西安电子科技大学), abbreviated XDU, traces its founding to 1931 and is today a national key university directly under China’s Ministry of Education, jointly supported by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence and the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation. It is a Project 211 university and part of the national Double First-Class initiative, with two disciplines in it: information and communication engineering, and computer science and technology.
The university is built around electronics and information, and the shape of the place follows from that. Its English overview page describes 19 doctoral programs and 29 master’s degree programs, and Xidian was among the first 35 universities in China with a National Pilot School of Software Engineering and among the first nine with a National Pilot School of Microelectronics. If you are coming for engineering, computing or microelectronics, it is organised around your subject; for medicine or law, it is not.
Two official pages count the university differently, and it is worth knowing which number you are quoting. The English homepage gives 41,800+ students, 3,900+ faculty, 30 academic sections, 196 partner universities, 68 international joint laboratories, 9 national laboratories, a library of 20.5 million items and 360,000+ alumni. The XDU Overview page counts full-time students instead — 39,440, made up of 22,750 undergraduates and 16,690 postgraduates (13,231 master’s and 3,459 doctoral) — and more than 2,800 full-time instructors, three academicians and 357 national-level talents. Neither says which supersedes the other; the difference is mostly full-time against total, and teaching staff against all employees.
Xidian has two campuses in southern Xi’an, Shaanxi — the South Campus at 266 Xinglong Section of Xifeng Road (710126) and the North Campus at No. 2 South Taibai Road (710071) — covering about 270 hectares in total. The School of International Education, and therefore your admission file, sits in Room 306 of the Main Office Building on the South Campus. The university also runs institutes in Guangzhou and Hangzhou.

Two campuses, one city
The South Campus on Xifeng Road and the North Campus on South Taibai Road are both in Xi’an; international admissions are run from Room 306 of the Main Office Building on the South Campus.
Two English-taught undergraduate majors
The undergraduate guide lists 54 Chinese-taught majors against two taught in English — computer science and technology, and information and computing science. Chinese-taught study, or a preparatory year, is the normal route here.
A pilot school for software and microelectronics
Xidian was among the first 35 universities in China with a National Pilot School of Software Engineering and among the first nine with a National Pilot School of Microelectronics.
Admission
Admission, programs & tuition
Xidian admits international students to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and to non-degree study, and applications go through the university’s own online system rather than an agent. The structure that matters most is the two-round calendar: the School of International Education’s admissions page states that for all 2026 enrolment programs the first round closed on 1 March and the second on 15 May. The rounds are not equivalent — the guides reserve the first for Chinese Government Scholarship applicants, so for that award there is no second chance in May. For the 2026 intake Xidian published five guides on that page as downloadable documents: undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, an International Undergraduate Cultural Integration Program guide and a Preparatory Training Program guide. The Cultural Integration Program is named only in that list, with no summary of its terms, so read that guide before assuming it works like the standard undergraduate route. One more thing to plan for at postgraduate level: the graduate guide requires a supervisor acceptance letter, obtained in advance and uploaded with your file — that conversation, not the form, is the slow part of applying here.

Preparatory training program
The bridge into Chinese-taught degree study. The undergraduate guide accepts completion of Xidian’s preparatory course in place of an HSK Level 4 certificate with 210 points, which makes this the standard route for an applicant whose Chinese is not yet at entry level. Xidian published a dedicated Preparatory Training Program Admission Guide for the 2026 intake; the course length and intake dates are set in that guide rather than on the summary pages, so ask the School of International Education for it.

Chinese language training
Non-degree Chinese language study at the language-trainee rate on the fees table. Unlike the degree routes it is not tied to the two rounds — the fees page lists language applications as accepted throughout the year. Trainees are eligible for the Chinese Government Scholarship bilateral program, the Confucius Institute scholarship and the Xi’an Belt and Road award at its non-degree rate, but not for the Huashan Scholarship, which is limited to degree students.

Xidian prices tuition as a single flat figure per level rather than a band by discipline, which makes budgeting unusually simple: RMB 17,000 per year for undergraduate study, RMB 22,000 for a master’s, RMB 33,000 for a doctorate, RMB 15,000 for the preparatory program and RMB 14,000 for language training. Budget separately for the RMB 600 application fee, non-refundable whatever the outcome; compulsory medical insurance at RMB 800 per person per school year; and accommodation at RMB 5,000–15,000 per year depending on the room. The fees page puts living costs at about RMB 50 per person per day as a reference — an indication, not a quote. Always confirm the current figure in the admission guide for your level and intake.

Scholarships
Xidian sits inside four layers of funding: the Chinese Government Scholarship channels, the Shaanxi provincial scholarship, the Xi’an municipal Belt and Road scholarship and the university’s own Huashan Scholarship. The most important fact is timing rather than money — the Chinese Government Scholarship is restricted to the first round, which closed on 1 March for the 2026 intake, months before self-funded admission closes. The second is that the provincial, municipal and university awards are partial: contributions in the RMB 13,000–25,000 a year range, not full rides, and only the Chinese Government Scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, living expenses and insurance together. Deadlines are published in two places that do not match — the admissions page closes the rounds on 1 March and 15 May, while the fees and scholarships page lists 31 March for the Chinese Government Scholarship and 31 May for the Huashan and Belt and Road awards. Work to the earlier date in each pair and confirm with the School of International Education.
Chinese Government Scholarship — University Postgraduate Program
A full scholarship covering tuition, accommodation, living expenses and comprehensive medical insurance, subject to an annual evaluation — renewed year by year rather than granted once for the whole degree.
Eligibility: Master’s and doctoral applicants. The School of International Education describes this as a full scholarship established by the Ministry of Education to support the construction of high-level universities, with the China Scholarship Council handling admissions under the ministry’s delegation. Applications must be made in the first round.
Chinese Government Scholarship — Bilateral Program
A full or partial scholarship; the terms of each award are set by the China Scholarship Council rather than by Xidian.
Eligibility: Undergraduate, master’s and doctoral applicants and non-degree trainees — the widest of the Chinese Government Scholarship channels at Xidian. Applicants apply through their own country’s dispatching authorities as well as to the university, and must use the first round.
Confucius Institute Scholarship
A full or partial scholarship, with terms set by the scheme rather than by the university.
Eligibility: Language and Chinese-teaching trainee categories, listed on Xidian’s scholarship table for the trainee routes rather than for degree study. This is the award now generally issued as the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship; Xidian’s page still uses the older name.
Shaanxi Sanqin Foreign Student Scholarship
A partial award paid at a fixed annual rate by level: RMB 13,000 a year for undergraduates, RMB 20,000 for master’s students and RMB 25,000 for doctoral students.
Eligibility: International degree students at universities in Shaanxi province, awarded on academic merit. It is a provincial government award administered through the university, so Xidian makes the selection from its own admitted and enrolled students.
Xi’an Municipal Belt and Road Foreign Student Scholarship
A partial award: RMB 15,000 a year for undergraduates, RMB 20,000 for master’s students and RMB 25,000 for doctoral students, plus RMB 1,000 per month for non-degree trainees — the only one of the partial awards that funds non-degree study.
Eligibility: International students at universities in Xi’an, at undergraduate, master’s, doctoral and non-degree level. The fees page gives a 31 May deadline, which falls after the 15 May close of the second round; check which applies to your file.
Huashan Scholarship (Xidian University)
The university’s own award, in three classes. First class covers tuition plus living expenses — RMB 15,000 a year at undergraduate level, RMB 20,000 for master’s and RMB 25,000 for doctoral students. Second class covers tuition; third class covers 50% of tuition. The graduate guide states that Huashan must be reapplied for every year.
Eligibility: Undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students, new and continuing. Unlike the Chinese Government Scholarship, Huashan applicants are not restricted to the first round — the undergraduate guide allows either batch. The fees page gives a 31 May deadline, against the 15 May close of the second round.

Research at the university
Xidian’s research is concentrated, not spread: it is built around electronics, information and communication, and it is in those fields that the university outranks its overall position by a wide margin. ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2026 places its remote sensing #2 and telecommunication engineering #4 in the world, with electrical and electronic engineering #11 and computer science and engineering #12 — against an overall placing in the 301–400 band of the Academic Ranking of World Universities and #39 among Chinese universities. The English homepage counts 9 national laboratories and 68 international joint laboratories, and the best-known platform is the State Key Laboratory of Integrated Services Networks. No consolidated count of provincial and ministerial laboratories, patents or research funding is published, so ask the school you are applying to rather than relying on a third-party summary.

Xidian’s English homepage counts 196 partner universities and 68 international joint laboratories. The most developed single partnership is with France: the School of Electronic Engineering runs a Chinese-Foreign cooperation program with the Polytech Group that it calls the first full-time engineering-related Sino-French education cooperation program in Shaanxi, in which French professors teach about a third of the undergraduate coursework and students may move into an engineering degree at one of the group’s 15 French institutions after their third year, graduating with both a Xidian diploma and a CTI-recognised engineer degree. Be careful reading that into your own plans: it has its own tuition of RMB 52,000 a year and is aimed at students admitted into it, not a study-abroad option any international student can pick up later.
Sino-French Polytech cooperation program
A Chinese-Foreign cooperation program with France’s Polytech Group, described by the School of Electronic Engineering as the first full-time engineering-related Sino-French education cooperation program in Shaanxi. French professors teach roughly a third of the coursework and students may continue into an engineering degree at one of 15 Polytech institutions after the third year. Tuition is RMB 52,000 per year.

International students live on campus in Xi’an, and Xidian quotes accommodation as a single band — RMB 5,000–15,000 per person per year — rather than a room-by-room price list. The spread is wide enough that it is worth asking which building and room type an offer comes with before you budget. Xi’an is one of China’s historic capitals and a major student city, and the two campuses sit in its southern districts: the South Campus on Xifeng Road, where the School of International Education is, and the North Campus on South Taibai Road. Medical insurance is compulsory at RMB 800 per person per school year, and the fees page suggests about RMB 50 a day for living costs.

Does Xidian University offer scholarships for international students?+
Yes, in four layers. The Chinese Government Scholarship comes in two channels here — the University Postgraduate Program, a full award for master’s and doctoral students covering tuition, accommodation, living expenses and medical insurance subject to annual evaluation, and the bilateral program, full or partial and open to undergraduates, postgraduates and trainees. Both are restricted to the first application round. Below them sit three partial awards: the Shaanxi Sanqin Foreign Student Scholarship (RMB 13,000 a year for undergraduates, 20,000 for master’s, 25,000 for doctoral students), the Xi’an municipal Belt and Road scholarship (RMB 15,000 / 20,000 / 25,000 a year, plus RMB 1,000 a month for non-degree trainees) and Xidian’s own Huashan Scholarship, whose first class covers tuition plus living expenses of RMB 15,000, 20,000 or 25,000 by level, second class covers tuition and third class half of it. Huashan must be reapplied for every year.
Is there an age limit for applying to Xidian University?+
At undergraduate level there is a floor and no stated ceiling: the guide requires applicants to be at least 18 and to have graduated from high school, and sets no upper limit. The English graduate guide states no age limit at all for master’s or doctoral applicants — it requires the right prior degree, a supervisor’s acceptance and good health instead. The 2026 guides are separate documents for each level, so confirm the age wording in the one for your level before ruling yourself out.
